Chronicle the Movie Thread

Okay… I watched it. I really do HATE this Hollywood obession w/ documentary style filming. If your last name isn’t Greengrass please stay off the grass. Excuse me while I bitch in my own form of rhetoric…

[details=Spoiler]I honestly did not enjoy this iteration of the movie. I didn’t think that the character’s other than Andrew were developed enough to really care enough to pay attention to the film. From what I got, Steve was an arrogant but earnest friend, Matt was… I don’t really know. Just another grain of salt in the shaker, Andrew was an abused, bipolar, sociopath.
There was A LOT of potential to develop this movie as a story instead of what I felt was told; which was: What happens when a group of teenage guys develop telekenetic powers? I can imagine that in my sleep, as a dream, and not pay $10 to see that. And honestly, the lucidity of that dream would be far more entertaining than the wasted potential that was Chronicle.
By the way, they could’ve adopted a better name for the movie than Chronicle. And what is with this pretentious stance of Hollywood putting the name of the movie at the end of the film? A signature on a terribly written book. At least you know when starting a book who wrote it and what it’s called.
Everything that I enjoyed in Akira i.e; art (which can be done in live-action film… This would’ve been a terrific opportunity to experiment with cel-shading movies), dialouge (twas pretty shitty IMO), a genuine concern for the characters (most of us claim to know bipolar, sometime tormented, people, many of us don’t want to be involved with them… Unless you genuinely care for them, and in this case I did not care for Andrew and was given no reason to. I was bullied in high school. Man up. We’ve all been victims of premature ejaculation… MAN UP), and a taking away something from that film that would help you be a better person (Akira’s message, in simplicity, was don’t abuse power, and be grateful for the people around you, you’ll need them some day)… Ugh…[/details]
Anyway, I don’t usually vent to the internet but this is one of those unacceptable moments in life whenever America filmmakers take a great foreign film/media device, for an example: Cowboy Bebop, and waste the great writing and dialogue of that story with a decision to cast [SPIOILER] Keanu Reeves as Spike Spiegel (Unconfirmed… I think).[/details]
American cinema: GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.
I had no problem with Steve getting killer first. FIlm makers know it, the audience knows it, the audience will talk about it, the film company profits from word-of-mouth advertising.
If I had not seen Akira before and then seen Chronicle I may feel different about it, but I do feel that this iteration has been stripped of the quality that Akira was so heavily engrossed in.

Saw the movie yesterday at 10 pm. Mixed feelings.

araider08 you need to fix your spoiler tags for real.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part. I think there were some strange lapses in logic for Andrew like

Wtf Andrew

Spoiler

Why wouldn’t you think of trying to help your mother earlier on in the movie? He never even considers what he could do with his telekentic powers on a microscopic level NOR does he ever think that hey, I can just rob an effing bank OR find out where they keep the drugs my mom needs, go there, and steal them! Has enough immorality to kill people but not enough to just steal. What a tool.

And for the other two blokes [spoiler=“Steve and Matt”]83 minutes just wasn’t enough time for this movie. By the time we got to dealing with Matt and Steve on a more personal level Andrew is wigging out. I mean it was great that the black guy was the ‘cool’ one for a change but it seemed like such a waste to have him offed so soon. Matt was on his way to becoming Superman but it was just so underdeveloped. I really wanted a stronger three way dynamic between the three of them. I think instead of Steve dying a forth person close to all three of them should have died. Would have made for a better fight if it were two versus one maybe.[/spoilers]

Nice to have a reason to go to the movies this year (not counting The Grey).

You need to fix your spoilers…for real.

cha ching cha ching yeah
ba bling ba bling
was it an accident andrew?
I’m worried about andrew

Chronicle

I’m fed up with the chronicle commercials. I’d rather hear “Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Don’t fence me in” Now that needs to make a return to SRK

I read that actors had some cool teambuilding stuff before the movie. (All three of them living in a house together for weeks.)

[details=Spoiler] I do kinda think that the Matt character may have been the weakest out of them all. It kinda seemed like the Andrew/Steve connection was alot more fleshed out also(Andrew saving steve’s life, Steve hooking andrew up, Andrew sharing his problems with Steve and vise versa0 it actually had a more Akira feel to it with the popular alpha male guy having the weak disturbed friend that he does his best to look out for. The cousin angle just seemed like meh to me. Matt never actually interacted much with Andrews family. Steve was the one who pointed out how andrew looked like his dad whooped his ass.

These are just my random thoughts about how the Steve death seemed really out of place. Matt’s whole character seemed to be there just to add a love interest and a way for andrew to end up at the crater. I think they could have done the same story without the Matt character and had a more complete/fleshed out story. However, I don’t see Steve remaining black in that situation (Hollywood and $) so that could have messed with the demographics. From a moneystandpoint, I think this is the best they could do in order to ensure a return on thier investment as far as casting/mass appeal. [/details]

Movie sounds interesting, I’m down to check it out.

Andreeeeeew! Matt! Andreeeeeeew! Maaaaatt! The Akira connection didn’t become obvious to me until the hospital scene but at that part it was undeniable. I liked the movie, I’ll probably watch it again when it comes to video.

00:44 was some wrong shit…made that poor little girl think Pedobear was after her ass.

Wow, it saddens me to see so many unrelated posts about this movie.

Anyway, I saw it yesterday and I loved it. I for one am a huge fan of these “found footage” genre movies when they’re done right, and this was certainly done right. At least to me, anyway.

It had good pacing, good enough effects, and three characters who I really enjoyed watching as their lives unfold with these newfound powers. I didn’t really care about the origin of **how **or **why **they got them, but that was because it wasn’t the focus of the movie and I for one think it made the storyline much or tangible. Usually movies like this take too much time to explain **why **things are happening, and that sometimes can pull the viewer out of the experience or realism of the film, and thankfully this movie didn’t do that. It was strictly about these three teenagers and how becoming a god can alter your mindset into something that isn’t even recognizable.

My favorite thing about this movie though, is probably the acting of whoever that kid is that plays Andrew. He did a fantastic job of portraying a character who is slowly breaking down into a sociopath because of his environment. He slowly becomes this unpredictable, and yet all-powerful demi god.

In short, this was one of the funnest/best movies that **I’VE **seen in a long while. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of shit for giving the movie such praise, but whatever. I fucking loved it. I want to go see it again.

Nah no way fam I loved it more than you. Imma check it again this sunday i wanna see safe house b4 then.

I thought the trailers did enough to hype it, I went there and loved the shit. I like akira and I liked this movie. It wasn’t meant to be deep or any of that given what we saw at that age thats what any of us or our friends would have done. You know except become a sith lord but sometimes power turns people evil.

With a stressful situation like Andrews you cant think str8 with all that pressure as a teen. If he was 30 something ok no doubt the human brain is more developed then but as a 17 or 18yr old shit is tough.

I enjoyed the movie for what it is, it’s great I dont have to hold hollywood responsible for not giving me a live action akira shit I own akira if thats what I wanna see guess what? I watch akira–like i got home and turned on akira like wow these movies are similar.

Movie was great. yea they could have done a lil more but if it was 2hours plus it might not have been decent. hour and a half no doubt–that last what 40mins when shit hit the fan I was on the edge of my seat.

Spoiler

When steve died I was like shit Andrew gonna go full sith lord and Matt is not strong enough to stop him. I wanted that 2 on 1 but i understand why that was done to give us that feeling of oh shit Andrew is gonna be unfuckwithable right now.

Watch Chronicle. It’s a good movie.

Saw it. All I can say is damn, Andrew. Man, damn.

I’m not hearing too much about this movie outside of SRK.
It’s like no one ever heard of it or even thought of watching it.

I suppose I’ll check it out, I’m convince to watch it now.

You won’t regret it. This is my favorite movie to watch ever since Watchmen came out.

When I saw it, I had no idea shit was gonna get so DARK. That shit got grim, son.

watchmen was awful so you mustnt have seen a lot of movies

now a real movie is starship troopers. one of richters finest roles

I went to see the movie about a week ago and it was amaazing. I loved the characters and all the shit that went down. I kind of wish there was more but all in all great movie.

Movie was sick. I loved it. Definitely got darker towards the end and the “oh shit” moments.

Some dudes here are analyzing it too much I think. When actually, its A LOT better than the usual garbage Hollywood spews out. You don’t have to praise it, but some guys here feel its “uncool” to give it props because it may have same concept of some anime I’ve never watched. Fuck that. Film was solid.

Hell, movie had more action and better fight scenes than the big budget superhero flicks. What the hell?

Pump your brakes on that one kid. I wouldn’t say it had better fight scenes that the big budget superhero flicks. It was well made to be sure but certainly not better.
