Chongqing, China

I’m making this thread even though it’s likely no one who plays FG’s lives in Chongqing. I moved here about a year ago though and even though I speak/read Chinese it was really hard for me to find the FG scene (wasted a few months to find it). I mostly only play SSF4 but I will include information about other games. If anyone is moving to Chongqing soon or is in Chongqing now and wants to start playing SSF4, send me a PM or reply here.

The SSF4 scene in Chongqing is decent for what it is. I’m by no means going to place in any major tournaments in the US, but I understand the game very well and am pretty decent (I’ve placed in tournaments here… lol). With that said, I would say that most all of the players in Chongqing, even the really good ones, have some really bad habits that prevent the level of play here from getting much higher than it is. I’ve been to Chengdu and the level of play there is noticeably higher primarily because they don’t have as many bad habits and also because they talk to each other after matches and offer advice or input. In Chongqing it’s very rare for someone to come discuss the match with you afterward. Also, I’m the only non Chinese person I’ve ever seen playing FG’s at any arcade in Chongqing…

The biggest bad habit in Chongqing is people just mashing out reversals during blockstrings. The better players will only tend to do it when they have meter to FADC. I know it’s a viable tactic when used sparingly, but people here are not really using it sparingly. Against a lot of people here you can’t really frametrap because if they think a throw/frame trap mixup is coming they will just DP. You can beat a lot of people by being annoyingly patient and baiting this shit out until they burn all their meter.

People will also tend to go into desperation mode too often. You’ll get otherwise good players doing stuff like jumping fierce, pause, ultra, or other really gimmicky desperation type shit when they are low on health. I never saw people doing this shit in Chengdu.

I don’t speak English with Chinese people, so I don’t know if anyone here speaks English well or not. I’m assuming at least some people would, but not like they would in Chengdu or Beijing. If you don’t speak Chinese it probably doesn’t matter… people rarely discuss matches anyway.

For SSF4 (in order from best to worst arcade):

**??? (City Hero) **In ???, Yang Jia Ping walking street. It’s underground, right off the side of the center square. It’s next to a ??? and under the rail for the monorail, across the street from the actual monorail station.

This arcade was the first to get AE, as far as I know it’s the only arcade that has AE. So for the time being it is the best place to play SSF4. Up until AE came out, this was the second best place to go as far as the level of play. Right after AE came out, all the best players came here anyway because they wanted to play AE. It kind of tapered off though recently and people from other arcades usually only come a few days a week. The regulars here are pretty decent though. There are some very good players and some good players. The best player here is probably this guy who uses Yun, he used Ryu/Akuma before AE and is, IMO, better with Ryu and Akuma but he wins more with Yun because he’s so broken.

There are two sets of head to head AE cabs here, but the owner is too dumb to have them all connected together so you are only able to play against the cab directly across from you. There are almost always people playing here, SOMETIMES you’ll go and there will only be scrubby people mashing buttons, but usually if you wait like thirty minutes someone who knows what they are doing will start to play.

They have tournaments here like once every few months. It’s cool because they will have it where there is a local tournament, then the top four from the local tournament will play against people from Chengdu. I don’t know how they organize this but the Chengdu players will travel here to play in these tournaments every once in a while. Last time this happened the Chengdu players won every single match

???, I can’t remember the English name of this place. It’s in ??, Nan Ping. It’s right in ?? plaza, it’s in a shopping mall with a Starbucks and a McDonald’s, on the second or third floor. Just find the Starbucks by the plaza, go in, find the stairs, go up until you see it.

The level of play here is the best. They have weekly tournaments every Friday afternoon at 5 or 6pm (can’t remember which). Every month they have a “big” tournament.

Last time I went here they didn’t have AE, but they might have gotten it very recently. I’d guess that they will have it soon if they don’t have it already. The regulars here are, on average, a step up better than at City Hero. Some of them have the bad habits I mentioned, but the best two or three players here are very solid, understand the game mechanics well, and rarely do dumb shit. Even though they are really good, they are all good friends with each other so they kind of dick around a lot and don’t play their mains etc. They play pretty seriously during tournaments, but it can sometimes be annoying the amount which they will dick around during casual play.

I live less than a ten minute walk from City Hero, so I rarely go to ???but if you live closer to here I would definitely just go here instead. If you live closer to City Hero, you probably don’t want to bother going to ??? except for tournaments or unless you really want to play against the best players. It’s a hassle to take the bus to Nan Ping, but there will be a monorail line that goes there soon.

???, Fly High Arcade (I think this is the English name…) Take the train to ??? Jiao Chang Kou, get off, go up the escalator, there is a club across the street. The arcade is directly to the right of the club on the second floor.

I haven’t been here in like eight months. They have one set of head to head cabs and not a single good player every plays here except for one guy who usually goes to City Hero that works next door to this arcade. He will randomly come here for like thirty minutes at a time. I really don’t recommend playing here; if you live near here it’s worth checking out, but unless things have changed a lot since I last went here, this place is really shitty for SF4.

??? City Hero in ??? Sha Ping Ba. I don’t remember how to get here, I only went here one time. They have a bootleg cab that has all the console characters but they don’t have AE. I was only here for like thirty minutes, a lot of people were playing but no one was good. It’s possible that good people play here, but I only went here the one time so I can’t be certain. I’m guessing that it’s unlikely because I would have met them at the other City Hero or at a tournament etc.

KOF

If you want to play King of Fighters, ??? City Hero in ??? Yang Jia Ping is really good. There are tons of people there playing, the level of play seems high. They have KOF '98 and KOF '97, KOF '97 tends to be slightly more popular.

They also have KOF 12 (or 13?) here but no one plays it ever, at all.

??? is good for KOF '97 as well. There are a lot of good players there and a lot of cabs. The KOF '98 machines are all broken here though.

I can’t say for sure which is beter overall for KOF, but I see more people crowded around KOF at City Hero than I do at ???. I’d just try going to both and see which you like more… the environment is definitely better at City Hero.

ArcSys games

??? City Hero in ??? Yang Jia Ping has BlazBlue but it’s not popular at all. They have one head to head setup and I sometimes see people who know what they are doing play, but most of the time it’s empty or someone is mashing against the computer with Jin or Ragna.

??? has Guilty Gear: AC (and no one plays it) but I don’t think they have BlazBlue.

I don’t think it’s an ArcSys game but it’s anime so whatever, City Hero has Devil Survivor but I don’t think anyone actually knows how to play this game. I see people playing it kind of often though.

Tekken 6

I don’t really understand 3d fighters… but from what I’ve seen ??? seems like the best bet for Tekken. They have the card system installed there, but it costs three tokens to play instead of two (it costs two everywhere else). The level of play seemed to be a bit higher here than at City Hero, but City Hero seems to generally have more people playing Tekken more often. Both City Hero and ??? have two sets of head to head cabs.

SF2

China is weird as fuck and they don’t play ST. They play the goofy version where Ryu can do like three shorts into DP and where Boxer doesn’t even have a headbutt. I don’t understand why they play this game, but there is a scene for it at both City Hero and ???.
