None of this is true. You cannot defend yourself against someone stronger than you with “what you find”, you do it with a tool designed for the situation.
Republics are democracies, and no, we don’t decide rights based on majority opinion. The reason a right exists is to protect you from powers in government and society, including the majority. Rights are granted and taken away entirely on merit based arguments, if they were taken away based on simple majority, then the second amendment easily would have been taken away by now.
By the way, you have made at least an order of magnitude more assumptions on this page than the other guy has.
And I am cool with gun ownership, but I am laughing out loud and people sending smartgun sellers death threats to those who sell it because they are afraid it encroaches their Second Amendment rights.
I’m just going to say as a parent I’d rather have my kids be trained, familiar, and comfortable when it comes to guns and situations that involve them. Guns exist acting like they don’t or saying “Hey no one should have them” isn’t going to change that fact or protect anyone in an actual hostile situation involving guns. I don’t want anyone I care about’s first time around guns to be their last.
Saying you have the right to defend yourself with lethal force, but no need/right for a gun because a gun is designed as a weapon (as opposed to “a brick, a shovel, a knife, etc.”) is plainly idiotic. A gun is an equalizer, if everything was down to brawling, physically stronger people and groups of people would always have an advantage. If some strange notion of “fair fighting” is behind this, why the hell should a criminal attacking someone be entitled to a fair fight (which in reality would never be fair anyways due to physical condition, brawling experience, etc). Let’s say your mother gets attacked by a mugger- your conclusion says “quick mom, go grab a brick!” Nonsense.
You clearly said “An Amendment can be changed. Just because it’s written on a piece of paper doesn’t mean it’s meant to be there forever. If the majority of people want it changed, it should be.”, which means you want pure democracy, i.e. mob rule. I never said the US is a democracy, and I abhor the idea of a pure democracy- in fact I dislike even the degree of democracy we do have, as it is far from what those who set up the American republic carefully framed to limit government. You then state that this is a republic, and representatives don’t vote based on your wants, then you conclude that 51% of the population trample 49%, which would imply that representatives really are voting based on their constituents desires (meaning it really is a democracy). You’ve contradicted yourself twice over on one topic.
3.“Gun control” as in the sort of controls in the nations you cited earlier in the thread, means “banning guns”, which you clearly stated you have no problem with. The link you’ve cited asks the far more vague question of “should laws covering the sale of firearms be more strict, the same, or less strict”, which is quite hugely different from the question of “should guns be banned”. Notice the spikes around high profile “gun free zone” shooting rampages, where the media pushes the anti-gun agenda with every ounce it has, and also notice that the first batch of data starts in 2000, with Columbine happening the year before (did a 13 year sample strike anyone else as odd?). The very same poll you cite later asks if handguns should be banned (again, not an outright ban) with far less favorable results. Please take the time to look at and actually read/think about your own data before lobbing it at someone else.
4.“Pussification of the next generation” refers to things like diagnosing a young boy acting like a young boy naturally does as a behavioral or mental disorder (which in turn leads to the sort of anti depressant drugs most or all of the people who go on shooting rampages seem to be on), flipping out over any sign of aggression, suspension of kids for things like biting a pop tart into the shape of a gun, and this “everybody wins”/“nothing is your fault” shit that’s dominant in the way children are raised now. This should have been clear by the context, but rather than think about what was being said, you jumped on the “that jerk called me a pussy” train of thought and immediately fired the smug cannons.
Self censoring and cultural changes in what’s acceptable is entirely different from “free speech” in the legal (meaning the government will fine/imprison/kill you of if you fail to comply) sense. When you say “freedom of speech” in the legal sense, this by definition is incompatible with hate speech laws. Going back a step, this “you’re not allowed to offend anyone” is a fine example of the sort of PC/zero tolerance “pussification” I lamented earlier, and this should have been quite clear to you as you typed that sentence.
Ironic that you would bring up Hitler, given the fact that gun control was a pretty huge part of his ability to do that whole “final solution” thing. If you honestly believe free speech is what brought Hitler to power, you need to read a few history books beyond whatever bile you were taught in school.
Your “spacious reasoning fallacy” example implies that a) my concern of crime while living in a high crime area is trumped up at best (which I can assure you it is not), and b) my conclusion that openly carrying a .45 in my yard and not associating with local thugs/junkies reduces my likelihood of being robbed or mugged is akin to concluding that a rock would keep a tiger away in an area without tigers. Again, do you even think about this shit before you post it? You bitched about me insulting people (which I wasn’t even doing) rather than trying to persuade them, them you lob this turd at me? And then you have the nerve to drop the "don’t respond to me bullshit?
You said " Why the fuck would you need to carry a gun in the city is beyond me.". I said “Statistically speaking, the city, particularly urban areas, is where you’re most likely to be a victim of violent crime.”, meaning that crime per capita is more concentrated in the city. I suppose I took for granted that you would understand what “statistically speaking” meant. Yes, there are going to be more crimes where there are more people, but more crimes in volume over a dense population does not by definition mean a higher crime rate- more crimes per capita means a higher crime rate.
Welp, can somebody explain to me why I can’t carry a butterfly knife? Fuck all this gun nonsense. Why can I have a .44 but not a damn knife I can use for a million things that a .44 doesn’t help with?
because it’s a concealed carry weapon and endangers police officers. It’ also why switchblades are illegal, iirc, a butterfly knife is a type of switchblade.
That’s a bullshit reason. There are plenty of other knives that are less handy to open. Why is the convenient one getting banned? Because of shitty PRs and Black people in NY stabbing police officers? Well, they’re cops are fucking shitty too. Ban the douchebag police officers.
Spring loaded knives are 100% legal (to my knowledge) because its not an auto like a switchblade which can be closed with no assist, i.e. Smith & Wessons M&P knife line. Concerning knives like balisongs (butterfly knives) and whatnot, it depends on the County/City/State IIRC and how long the blade is. In some states they are 100% legal for concealed, open carry, or both. They are classified as a “gravity knife” in some jurisdictions.
Funny how this reminded me of when I was in Iraq during the military. I had a decent butterfly knife that I bought at the Bazaar because the M16 that was issued to me was junk. Would always jam up after a few rounds were fired and IIRC the barrel needed to be replaced because my shot group was never consisted when ever we went to the firing range. I would always tell another soldier besides me during gate/tower/check point guard, that if shit hits the fan, you’d better be the one doing most of the shooting. But at least if my point got over run, I’d go out slicing up a few sand ninjas. By the time I left and handed the blade to some guy replacing my post, got decent on doing some tricks with it, especially the one where the blade is in a vertical stabbing motion.
