my opinions on 10 dollars for a venue few is fine. ive paid more to see shitty shows and skate shitty parks.
sooo if im guaranteed to play street fighter, im content with paying ten dollars to hang out somewhere. and if the gathering wasnt going on tonight, what else would i be doing? laying in my room, on my computer, playing shitty online matches?
id much rather shell out 10 dollars, hang out with people i like, and play sf.
Having Ari enter or not enter the tournament isn’t going to make people magically get better at the game. If you are getting discouraged because he’s entering into the singles tournament and you think you’re throwing your money away, you’re not going to get good. Floe is still well beyond most people in the midwest in the game. He’s got the experience and talent to push him far beyond where other people are right now. So what do you do? SF4 online sucks balls so you’re not really going to be able to play people consistently who are as good as him… so you need to play him… how do you do that? It’s not going to be by playing each other over and over again. That’s not getting most people here anywhere. You gotta find out where he’s going to be and play him, and the other better players like GLB, Dfly, Tactics, hell even Marc if you guys are still losing to him. So instead of just coming out to these tournaments and being afraid to play these guys, just play them god damnit, even if you lose 20 times in a row, and ask questions about what you need to do because those guys aren’t assholes and I know a lot of the better players will help out. If you just care about playing each other, that’s fine, but expect to hit a wall at some point. Also another thing I noticed watching people at Gameworks last time I was there is a lot of people drop combos like crazy, but that’s another issue.
I wouldn’t consider myself a good S Calibur player… or even a calibur player in the first place but I spent every gathering playing Damien (thuggish pond, 3rd at evo, won nats this year) as much as possible. It was rape like every time, but then I went on to place top 2 or 3 at almost every tournament I went to after that because he was able to help me out and give suggestions and it wasn’t just because I was sitting there having my ass handed to me over and over again but because I spent my time with the game constructively trying to figure out everything I could behind it.
Anyway like I’ve explained before, this is what I’ve done and it may or may not work for you, but the main point is you’re NOT going to get better playing against mid tier players over and over. If you had some kind of secret talent for the game it would have already shown through… the game’s been out for 8 months now.
I think the question here is Rosebud vs Labriolas, who has the best burger?Hahahaha.
I respect everyones opinion and really understand that funds are harsh these days. The only thing that comes to mind was how I was 15 when I started going to the Arcade, id blow $20 everytime I was there just to get my ass raped hardcore by the older sf players. Within time I learned and eventually couldnt lose at the arcade I was at…so all in all Im just use to having to pay to level up.
Can’t really stress how excited I am about these events that im running. Really I NEVER wanted to run anymore tournaments since Ive always had a hard time running tournaments and still being able to compete in the tournament itself. It definitely puts extra pressure on me and fucks with my competitive side of things…which is really harsh on me since im EXTREMELY competitive. Id love to be able to just be a player for once to be able to focus on just leveling up…but this scene needs me…and ill do whatever it takes to give it another shot to help everyone out since I feel like I abandoned you guys back then.
See you guys at the gathering, ill be there at 4:30 just in case some early birds come around.
this is on the money right here, 10 dollars for HOURS of constant local gameplay is not expensive, the alternative here in chicago is staying at home for games online or finding local gatherings that are far smaller.
and floe, seriously don’t stop entering, that’s just crazy talk.
To be honest i had had a few drinks last night and my math may have been a bit off. Also it does not matter how much time you spend playing. But i totatly could theorticly fit in 50 hours a week easy. I can fit in 7 hours a night on weekdays getting home from work at 7 playing till i go to bed at 2. Thats 7 hours x 4 9 hours on friday because you can go to bed whenever.
We are now at 37 hours and the weekend hasnt even started. On the weekend you can play 16 hours per day easy. that bumps you up to 69 hours of time to play.
Do i play 50 hours a week i might now that im looking at the math more. I guess i wasnt that drunk. I would say i spend 50 hours a week on video games if you count everything else i am playing now and 30 easy on SF4.
i’d say would spend anywhere from 10.34 hours to 50.93248 hours on video games a week, but most of the time it’s closer to 23.3 hours if i’m not that busy i can sometimes get in as much as 67.2 hours which is 33.6 times 2 hours EASY
ide be willing to do some kind of special exhibition or something at mcm if people wanted more exposure because i agree…me entering the tourny and playing me a quick 2/3 isnt really going to help you much
Not going to MCM, but much appreciated D. I think that $5 to $10 isn’t bad for venue, understand where shark and D are coming from. It is much for ppl who are not working fulltime. Maybe it will ameliorate ppl’s feelings bout the fee if some of the new equipment and all came in in the near future? It is frustrating seeing a planted seed not growing.
Just in case anyone’s interested and not already doing something tonight, I’m going to be at Gameworks with a group of people from Reddit.com.
If anyone wants to get in some TvC, MvC2, DDR, or T6 (or SF4, I guess), I’ll be there.
I’d be willing to sit down and teach a little TvC to anyone who wants to learn. I’m not necessarily the best around here, but I know the game well enough.
I think that’s a good idea to do something where people can play against you with maybe a little commentary and helpful tips on why they’re losing. I basically learned MvC2 by playing with dereklearnslow and getting my ass handed to me over and over, but now I can hold my own, not necessarily against him, but against some above-average players.
i was thinking something like sitting down at a station and like ppl could line up to play or make a list or something since itll probably be a while between turns…and i could do like a 4/7 with each person with a char of their choice and then possibly offer advice or random helpful tips…not really about win or lose as id stay on the machine regardless but more so just trying to point out peoples weak points
