Mexican comedian Roberto Gomez Bolaños died on Friday afternoon at 85, according his family.

The creator of characters like “El Chavo del 8” and “El Chapulín Colorado” lived in Cancún, Quintana Roo, with actress Florinda Meza and his health was fragile, and there were frequent reports about his death.

But today, around 2:30 p.m., the producer and director’s death was confirmed by his family, without details about the cause or if he was in Cancún or Mexico City.

He got the nickname of “Chespirito” from a movie director, based on the Spanish pronunciation of Shakespeare, due to his abundant work and his short physical stature.

More than four decades after their production, his TV shows are still shown all over the world, specially Latin America

Unfortunately most of his work was overshadowed by El Chavo del Ocho, but he was actually quite a true comedic genius, there are lots and lots of great pieces by him that are very rarely re-aired

I don’t think el chavo and chapulin colorado was ever translated into English, likewise The U.S is not a country that imports pop culture anyway. If I have to compare it to something I’d say the show was like the looney toons but in real life.

Those shows that are timeless and they will still continue for many years, rest in peace “shakespearito”
