the “sneaker game” is ass right now. every decent release is extra limited and comes out midweek (ASS) and goes on ebay for like 500-4k. makes me want to just stick with the sneakers that i have and not cop anything else. i refuse, refuse, refuse to pay 1k for some sneakers that JUST dropped that should have dropped a long time ago in their true form (mcfly’s) in large quantities.

Infrareds are the best example of something that is now overhyped and people are jumping the bandwagon on. Back in 2005 when they came out for the History of Air celebration, they sat on sales racks for months, going as low as $40, and people were swearing that they were whack because they were “pink” shoes. All of sudden in 2008 it’s cool to like Air Maxes and pastel shit, so everyone is beasting on Infrareds now. It’s lame.
And yes, Nike Running is en fuego right now. If you only knew what they are up to for the rest of 2008 and early 2009… DAMN!
i dont follow hype though, its just a bunch of overrated bandwagon shit, like you said. i mean you can see what i post, i buy what i like and i buy whats fresh. i dont buy shoes because of the popularity value of them. thats what pisses me off about certain sneakers that actually look nice, people hype the shit out of them and prices soar through the fuckin roof because of it. tiffany dunks have to be one of the most hyped shoes of all time. i remember seeing those way back and thinking that the colors are nice as hell on them but because of the fact that they’re so hyped, they’ll run me 200-300 bucks. its ridiculous because i know i could buy a pair a dunk 5.0’s and paint them and stuff the tongue for less but i just dont have the time.
i also try to stay away from air max unless i’m really diggin the colors on them.
sometimes i just dont get why some sneakers’ prices are so fuckin high and the colors are nothing to rave about. it ends up being a competition for those who can pay the most for the name associated with the shoe. this is just my opinion though, i’m more of a person who goes for looks rather than exclusiveness…

Believe me, there was stuff that’s more hyped than Tiffanys.
Prices go up because shit is (artificially) rare, or an instant classic but already sold out everywhere. In most cases with Dunks, it’s the former. Generally, prices go up solely because something is rare, no matter how fugly it is. A good example is the Lobsters. Nobody in their right mind would want them if they were a GR release and sold in Finish Line, but since they were SBs, everyone beasted on them, and even sat in line for days, just for a special box, when they could have waited a couple of weeks and walked in to any store with an SB account and scoop them up. This is why I hate SBs with a passion now. Everybody is all about hype/rarity, and most of the shoes aren’t all that anyway.
I look at things this way: If you actually like the shoe because you genuinely dig it, then it’s cool. If you like the shoe because everybody else wants it, then you’re a fucking sheep, which is what most “sneakerheads” are. Those types only go for whatever’s being beasted on at the moment and overlook the real gems that are out there, especially if it’s GR. If anything is wrong with the sneaker game now, it’s those hypebeasts.
EDIT: Bay 6, I live in NYC, and believe me, Infrareds sat for months over here. Them selling out is a new phenomenon. Same thing goes with Neon 95s also. Watch out for Persian Purple Air Max BWs in January. They will be the new Infrareds for early '09. Bet it.
Out of curiousity, Where do you live?
Just asking because when the History of Air thing was going on, I was beyond excited for Infrareds after seeing a sample pair on ebay. The day they came out, I went to Champs at my local mall and purchased a pair. The employee at the register offered me the Champs VIP card, so I and they gave me a $10 off coupon for my next purchase. I immediately walked over to Foot Locker in the same mall and picked up a second pair and used the coupon.
I wore em a day or so later and my GF’s friend really liked em and wanted a pair. I told her where I got em and later she said she had no luck finding em anywhere. I went back to the same stores I went to a week later and sure enough, they were sold out. An employee said they didn’t move all that fast, but to sell out in a week is pretty good.
I remember the DMPs dropped shortly after. I wore my infra’s to the mall and there was at least 5 other people wearing them as well. They sold out of my size, so I was assed out of DMP’s, but I went home and jumped on the Air Max ID’s.
I can’t speak on everywhere else, but I do think the hype did exist a bit in NJ. I will admit the hype for them now is MUCH worse than it was in 05/06. AM 1’s didn’t move at all around here and the Neon 95’s sold out like they were fuckin’ Jordan’s. All gone on release day. I slept of both of those and was pretty happy when I heard the 95’s came back out, just not enough to pay $200+ for em. I’ll most likely get the OG AM 1 colorway if they do come back out.
