Check Out My New Arcade Stick! (No Image Quoting)

Fair warning, you have to get a Japanese PSN card, and get a Japanese PSN prepaid card to get it. You can get them on ebay but READ THEIR FEEDBACK BEFORE YOU BUY. I got ripped off on one, and had to file a fraud claim with Paypal to get them to finally send me the code, but this was after I bought one from another store. (And was actually the reason I wound up buying Ehrgeiz and Biohazard Directors’ Cut in the first place, having the extra Yen in my account in the first place–All I wanted was Intelligent Qube)

Neither can I, so here we go!

I wanted to make a stick for my friend, who’s a big MvC fan. Since MadCatz didn’t do a happ/iL based stick, I had to make my own. I present : Berserker Barrage!

I threw everything but the kitchen sink at this one: wireless ps3 and 360 dual mod with button press activated LEDs. Parts include:

Finkle-esque Custom case made by Physh in Canada
Sanwa JLW joystick (case is modified to accept a iL as well) with painted yellow bat top
Seimeitsu yellow bubble top (in case he wanted a ball top instead)
Clear JLF arrow dustwasher
Novegem pushbuttons (happ concave buttons with custom LED boards attached)
Seimeitsu PK14s for start/select/home
Gummowned’s Leo board, which makes it all possible
Tinted plexiglass bottom cover
LEDs are wired to a switch on the underside of the case

Switching between the two is done via 2 dpdt switches, painted to match the stick. Instead of a Neutrik, I used a female usb to female mini usb adapter, dremeled and filed a hole in the case, filled in the gaps with wood putty and sanded smooth before painting. The paint scheme was set to pay homage to the old X-Men suits. I used a spray blue metallic flake and a safety yellow enamel paint that I used a roller on. Paint was wet sanded and coated with 6 coats of polycrylic, also wet sanded and polished to a mirror shine.

For the art, I asked template master d3v for an assist, and he came through better than I could have hoped. My buddy’s main character is Wolverine, so he made a custom template just for this stick. After finagling with Kinkos, I got it printed out on card stock in time for the assembly

Delivery was this evening. Here’s the video showing working dual mod and LEDs

Pics of the build progress can be found here. Thanks to Chad at LizardLick, Nareg at Gamingnow (glad to see you got that order situation resolved!) for parts, Gummowned, Beneco74 and Purplearms for all the technical assistance the months before an during the build, Physh for the case and initial art prints (great work, hope to see your work again) and d3v for pulling the art together on something that’s not a TE or HRAP! Could not have done this without all of your patience and help.

I’ve got 2 more projects in the pipelines, one nowhere near as complicated and one that should top this one if all goes well. I’m in the middle of writing up the blog from the build and will post the ‘Dual Modding for Noobs’ once I’m finished. Hope you enjoy it; my buddy definitely did!

dam thats a sexy stick matches a pair of sneakers i have lol

I had to refrain myself from jumping the gun and posting the pics myself. Awesome work, my art but the complete stick was your concept in the first place. I should be thanking you for the opportunity to do art for such a stick.

If anyone’s wondering, I came up with the “iBUKI Designworks” name while thinking up of how to sign my name on the art of the stick. I’m thinking of using it for when people commission art for their project sticks from me (outside of the random stuff I post). And yes, this means that I am willing to do art for just about any form of stick, time willing. Just send me a PM and we’ll see what I can do.

Nice to see some Happ love and you did pretty well considering their isn’t much to choose from in the color department from Happ but I’;m surprised you didn’t use the P360 just the happ buttons? Anyway nice case good job

thats a sick paint job… I like the blue

I’m spaazzing at the fact of which custom builder should i go too x_x

Go Voltech FTW!!! shameless plug lol

Souji- That is a beautifil custom you built there! I just saw the video on Youtube. Love the superclean wiring! Did you do the artwork yourself?

Spenzalli- Nice job on the mvc stick. That is alot of wiring work you dont there! I like those buttons aswell as they are totally clear unlike the seimitsu’s.

Those are transparent Happs. They look nice alone, however, unlike clear Seimitsus, you cant put art inside them.

Hehe. was fun. I like the Murder pic :)))

I want to post some of my customs here but Im kinda intimidated by the great custom builders here

Do it! You need to show the world that asians can make awesome customs as well.

Also, there might be a few people from within the region who may want to avail of your services.

@ d3v - I wanted to post them earlier myself but I had to wait until I got the video shot. When my buddy came over to pick up the stick, he wanted to play thru some levels of Mass Effect 2 first, which held things up. I’m thinking ‘do you know what awesomeness waits for you in that box you’re not opening up!?!?’ Again, much thanks

@ Voltech - I originally wanted to try out a JLW for myself, but when my friend wanted his own fightstick, I figured I’d give it to him. That way, if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t be stuck with it! As it stands, it works pretty well. If I were going with the wired stick I suppose I could have used the p360 and swapped the bat handle with a yellow one from a competition, but I wasn’t sure how much of a drain that would put on the battery. Now that you see what I finished, you understand what I have to beat with that project we talked about!

@ Beneco74 - I got that REDRUM idea looking over your posts and figured you may get a kick out of that. If it weren’t for you and Gum being patient with all my questions and wiring diagrams, this wouldn’t have got done. Thanks again

@ B15 - Coming from you, that means a lot. Thank you. I’ve always said there’s not enough happ love in the community at large, and since most of the people in my area grew up on them, that’s what they want. It’s easy to get a Sanwa setup these days; you need to put in work for a happ! Since I was going for the MvC stick look, yellow and clear seemed like a natural choice.

While that was a lot of wiring in there (final assembly and wiring took about 3 hours for me, not counting the initial wiring, ground chains, vcc chains for the lights, and sleeving, which I hate…) the painting took the longest time, mainly because I did’t read. In short, I learned 2 things: first, vinyl dye is the way to go for plastic, like that bat top. I had more ‘FAIL’ on that than anything else on this project. I may have been able to use an acrylic paint, but I don’t have a spray gun or air brush yet. Second, enamal is enamal, whether it’s from a rattle can or a pint can. If you don’t wait that week for the paint to cure, you’re asking for trouble…

I must be one of the few here who grew up on Japanese sticks. Only time I ever got to try Happs was when I was in the states in '94 and I got to play on a Virtua Fighter cab in some theater in the San Jose, CA. area. I was around thirteen or fourteen back then, all I remember was that it was pretty stiff although I can’t exactly remember how stiff.

That said, how does the JLW compare to a proper US style stick? I’ve played on JLWs before and would liike a point of reference to the feel of a Happ.

Two big differences. First, coming off a happ, the stick just feels super loose, almost directly proportional to those who say the happ is way too stiff coming off a JLF. The JLW is pretty close, but the happ is a bit stiffer and the stick has more deflection than either. Second is the gate. With the happ, there’s no gate, so you have that free 360 degree feel. Most JLFs have the square gate, and catching the corners is one of the biggest things people have to learn to get used to coming from a happ, if not the biggest thing.

I put the circle gate in the JLW and it’s as close as I can get. The one thing I noticed is I sometimes have trouble hitting a diagonal on the JLW, but none on the happ, but back/forward motions are easier on the JLW than the happ. It could be because of the switch setup (levered switched and round activator in the JLW, regular cherry switches and square activator in the happ). I toyed around with modding the JLW to use a square activator and cherry switches, but didn’t want to spend much time on that.

The buttons are a whole other story…

I’ve always wondered about the square activator on the Happ. Wondered if it made it feel like a square gate.

Also, no comments on how ironic it is that the only time I ever played on Happ parts, was on a very Japanese game (VF).

Damn, d3v, that Wolverine stick is PRO! Markman, why hasn’t Madcatz gotten designs from him yet?

** spenzalii** That’s a boss flake job you did with the happ case man! The lessons learned from your mirror coated first box are really showing in this build  and the wiring job was nicely done within the snug space. Keep it up bro!

@B15sdm Why thanks my brah  I had a lot of fun with that build, first tekken themed stick so it was a cool change of pace. For the art I couldn’t find any one piece that I liked so I went for an image mash with a few layers of textured vectors. Here’s a quickie of the art work (dayshots kinda toned it down :S)
