Dyed curly maple is really awesome. Me wants
aight. its clear, if it matters
thanks for the help. will i be able to get some sanwa buttons in there? how bad are the stock parts?
A Tiger Maple Sagat Stick would be so badass. Especially dyed orange.
Awesome, Look forward to getting it in the mail.
I really like that second curly maple stick Kaytrim, that light wood finish looks awesome.
Thanks everyone for the coments both posted and not.
Thank you, doing these dyed curly maple joystick parts were more work than I though it would be. Finishing these are a pain, but the end result is worth it.
Shoot me an email. I have a slot or two opening up after the first of the year.
That sounds interesting. Orange is doable.
With everything going on this last weekend I did good to get these pictures taken. I’ll get yours packed up tonight for shipping.
The figure on that is some of the best I have on hand. The top panel and joystick parts gave me some problems as the customer will attest to.
Michael,
Great work, man. Your curly maple case’s are the best I’ve seen…you really put that wood’s natural beauty on display.
QUESTION : The dyes you use, what brand are they? Where can I find them?
I can’t find any dyes in my local stores, and have though of trying to make my own by adding food coloring to the thinner I use in my polyurethane. Bad idea?
I know it’s ghetto, but I’m trying to come up with creative solutions. I’ve recently come across some beautifully grained poplar, and figure that I can open up some options in terms of finishing by giving myself some color choices.
Anyway, as usual, that’s some really nice work - cases like that are why you are one of the builders I really look up to.
Keep up the good work!
EDIT* Is that one of your turned wooden bat-tops? You really ought to make a batch of unfinished ones of varying species … I’d certainly buy a few and treat my customers to some wooden-bat-top goodness. ( My wife is gonna kill me, but I need to add a lathe to my arsenal)
How do I get on the Secert Santa list!?!
Voltech it is great to see you back building bro! Very nice custom you have there I caught the fliker page with the different color theme’s for the buttons, and that white with the white balltop was the way to go for real. Any tips on the white paintjobs? That white is sooo clean without a seam of joinery found anywhere, Great Job and again welcome back!!
I use TransTints dye. You can purchase the different colors online from Rockler. They may look a bit expensive but you only put a few drops in Denatured Alcohol or Water. Stuff goes a long way. I use one of those medicine cups to mix up a batch when ever I am dying a case. Fill the medicine cup 1/2 to 2/3 full with Denatured Alchol then add a few drops of the dye. Test it on the wood to see if you need to add a few more drops. Keep in mind that an oil based poly will change the color a bit. To give you an idea that dyed case above was blue. The oil based poly changed it to aqua.
I don’t know if food coloring would work. My guess is that it might but the only way to know for sure is to try it out.
As far as the wooden tops yes that is one of my bat tops and dust cover sets above. I have a JET Mini lathe with variable speed. That is only about half of the investment though. You still have to purchase some good chisels, chucks and learn how to use them and keep the chisels sharp. My wife and I are duscussing the possibility of switching to more of this type of work instead of the full custom cases.
TTFN
Michael
Apologies for shoddy pics, they make the art look a little washed out and it’s not at all! This room has crappy lighting so it was either too-bright images with flash or dull phone pics!
Sides painted black with VHT vinyl dye
My custom artwork and extended TE plexi (countersunk) from doomy
Flathead replacement screws from doomy, heads painted black and clearcoated
Replaced osbf-30s and obsf-24s to match artwork. Damn the 24s were a bitch to remove.
Orange sanwa meshball (alternative orange seimitsu bubbletop)
JLF ultimate mod (removed the extra spring after trying it out, too stiff for me. Retained 2 strips of tape on actuator and paper strips inside switches)
I can’t thank doomy enough for his help and his patience when I had a bit of a disaster earlier on with it. Great product and great service, can’t recommend him enough.
Nice one Markman. I have seen that stick on japan auction few times but never bid on it. At the moment im hunting the most rare ones that i dont see in the auction Like Hrap SE ps2 those are rare and hori made only 400 of those. That is my next hunt i had chance last time to get for good price but didnt
U can put 24mm microswitches and keep the stock plunger. Reason the case so small its best not to dremel it.
Am I the only one that pushes hard on the switches for the top to pop up and then work from the inside of the shell? That makes it much easier to handle those “arms”.
Cool akuma stick jeemer.
That stick is one of the prized possessions in my collection! Seriously, only 400 made and 40 of which were used for marketing/press in Japan. It was even nominated/voted in a Famitsu poll as one of the greatest controllers of all time.
I’ve only seen ONE in person at E3 in 2006. It is hilarious that years later I end up getting the same one through a friend at Hori. That is my favorite stick in my collection (rarity wise), but my real favorite to use is of course the Namco arcade stick <3 !
Among my rare arcade sticks, I also have a few un-numbered/special runs of some TE/SE sticks. There was a special batch of Comic-Con TE sticks (50) that were made for Capcom employees. Those are REALLY rare.
That is nice stick, never seen that before.
That is definitely the best looking HRAP. I have a DC stick I modded and it ended up with a similar look.
@jeemer , One of my favorite te’s, I love the button color combo , aswell as the artwork , I need someone o help me out with art , so I can get sothing clean le that
Man that Hrap SE is fcking awesome. That is the stick i want the most for now. I can get any rare stick easy but that one is hard as hell. Mmm u have non mark TE and SE numbers maybe we should trade some sticks.
The 2nd stick i had hard time finding was Virtua Stick for ps2 black one. Those are rare only seen on ebay and the seller wants 175 for. But i was able to get one for good deal at japan auction. Those are hard to find there too. I was luck to get it. Here pic of it.
