I don’t know what the original post was, but I don’t think anyone is complaining about the editted post.
They get positive feedback throughout the board.
When I read a game review, I usually look to see the negative ones because they are usually more truthful. If there are only positive comments, I am a bit skeptic because chances are the reviewer let his love for the game/product skew his views.
I had to write a personal statement just recently. I sent it out and asked people to edit it. A lot of people told me it was good. A few others mentioned it sounded like I was making excuses. Then this one guy messaged me and told me it sucks donkey balls, and he was under the impression that I wanted to get into a good school. Well, that was when I was finally motivated enough to basically rewrite most of it. I sent it out again, and one of the people that had been somewhat negative before said it was better, a lot more focused. Why am I telling you all this? Because I think it parallels to criticism to anything you create in general. If theres something wrong with your work, a lot of times it takes getting blasted in order to realize something is wrong and to motivate you to change for the better. If the criticism is completely wrong, then you can just ignore it because you know what you’ve done. But if you’re serious about something, and you really want to put out the best product you can, you take it into consideration and see if you can improve.
I think a lot of you guys need to relax on flaming people with constructive criticism. While I think its good that people are praising the work first before they point out a criticism, I don’t think they should be discouraged completely from posting a problem.
As for my part, I’ve already mentioned that I felt the comic was too short, and mentioned that I don’t really like the side stories. I praised the comic first and mentioned it might be just that I like the comic so much it feels short to me, but still, I guess you can consider that a criticism. Others said they liked the side stories. We didn’t go around flaming each other for our opinions, but just accepted the reasons behind each. I realize the side stories are going to be there throughout. I kind of hope eventually that the SF Comic can become longer by having more pages to devote to the main story by cutting out the side stories. To my knowledge, the main reason the side stories are there is to sell more comics based on a different artist working the side story. If this is true, its my hope that eventually they no longer feel they need to do that, and I can read another 2 pages, or maybe 4 pages without cheapshots, to the main story every month. I personally buy the comic for the main story, and don’t care about the cheapshots and to a lesser extent the side story (they can be useful, I just dont think we need one every issue).
I agree the comic is still pretty short but It’s been improved lately atleast, I quite like the back-stories personally but I don’t see what the fuss is about all these different artists, if it was just done by the Udon team I’d still be happy, but I’m not a comic collecter with the exception of this, Metal Gear Solid (which just started) and when they come out, Rival Schools and DarkStalkers. I know the artwork gets criticised a lot and I find it has it’s ups and downs to its standard but I still find the art quality really good most of the time. It is a bit rushed but I am enjoying the story a lot, it seems like they are managing to slowen the pace now, which is excellent. I also only buy the comic for the story well that and because I’m an SF fan. I think the merchandising has gone overboard quite a lot though.
I think some of the Cheapshots were pretty good, especially the “Sucks to Be Ryu”, “Psycho-balled/Be nice to girls” and the “Tribute to Zangief” ones were pretty funny, especially when it said “Just quit biting people…that can’t be healthy!” at the end of the Zangief one! ^^
And personally, I actually regard the Sakura/Karin story as one of the freshest backups of the series. I mean the ‘fun’ style really matches the Sakura theme well.
Holy shit, theres an MGS comic now? Gimme some info, and tell me how far behind I am. I’ll probably want to collect that too. PM me if you don’t want to discuss this in the thread.
Now, the MGS Comic - It’s kind of like the Devil May Cry Comic, follows the Game’s storyline with a few differences. The Art looks like, kind of like the official MGS Art, (But not as good) seems like a strange medium for telling a comic book story but I kind of dig it.
WHATEVA! We’re the one’s filling their pockets, so we have the right to express any gripes we have w/ the comic. I say Cheapshots sux and is a waste of space. Comic books are short enough as it is!
Completely agree… and i’m glad somebody brought this up.
as a hardcore fan and long-time reader, at first, it was cute… then, after issue#1 it started to not be funny. …And then stayed unfunny and it got LONGER with 2 PAGES of not funny stuff, when it could have been 2 MORE pages of good art or Back up art.
i dont know if Udon thinks CS is actually funny, or they are keeping the kid employed, but i know i’m not alone when i say that cheapshots just sux now. i REALLY hope that it gets shortened to just one page, AND becomes funnier, or just remove it altogether. we need more ALVIN and ARNIE art. thats 2 PRECIOUS pages of important story that could be covered.
a good example is…i waited for months for issue#9, and although it was worth the wait, the two frikkin pages of crappy coloring (in my opinion, however HIP and Trendy its trying to be) and badly, unfunny SDF character art and in-joke pointlessness with a stupid beanstalk and wizards and stuff, its just ruined the end of the bookfor me and just didnt fit.
anyways. end of ranting… i know it doesnt really matter, what my opinion is, but this is a forum…i really hope somebody at udon doesnt decide to put this “Cheap Sh!ts” inside the Rival Schools and Darkstalkers books… or i’m gonna be reading up to page 22 then closing the book.
I think cheapshots could be good, but only like 1 every 3 issues. It kinda gets stretched a bit thin when you put it in every issue, and it kind of loses its novelty and appeal. I actually stopped reading them myself honestly, I kind of skim through them. Placement might be an issue too. Maybe it would be better in the middle or between the main and side stories. I don’t know why I think so, but I think it could work better like that.
To each their own. Personally, Cheap Shots is one of my fav parts of the book. Although I found the one in #10 to be a bit lacking. It was too short and didn’t really go anywhere.
i HATE cheap shots!!!
they are AWFULL!!!
completely UNNEEDED
STUPID
BORING
Udon, you should better prolong your main story, or the side story, or even sell this place for arvertisement (so you’ll have more money to make USEFULL things), but
get the cheapshots out of the book!!!
and don’t fill it with characters dats or so. everyone knows them and can get them on the internet.
sorry for the criticism, but this is what i think
dont want to offend anyone
keep up the great work on the best comic book ever!!!
I don’t even bother to read that shit. It’s bad enough I have to deal w/ those badly drawn innaccurate backstories. I still get pissed every time I think 'bout that one where Ryu ripped out Ken’s hair w/ a hurricane kick. The fuck was that?!
Badly drawn? Are your eyes broken? They’re being done by some of the TOP ARTISTS in the industry. It’s more believable to you that Ryu can PUNCH a man and horribly scar him but not rip out some hair when he kicks?
Innaccurate how?
It’s a retelling of instances IN the comic story, which you already ranted about NOT being “canon”.
Also, didn’t you say not more than 2 issues ago that you LIKED Cheapshots?
Show some respect for the creators and the people that put their time and hard work into something so YOU can be entertained.
This is exactly what I was talking about.
I think the shit is a waste of time…i counted those pages for each issue and its like over 15 pages LONG combining all the books so far. thats like, more than HALF a single issue of SF. that means, we’d probably have an extra issue coming too us a little sooner for all the space wasted on the cheapshots stuff…i respect anyone doing their thing, but i dont understand the relevancy of Bean stalks and SD wizards helping ken costumed game lovers find their way outta “Street Fighter town” to the SF universe that it HAS to be there every issue when we could be clearing up more back story on side characters.
not to mention, its just drawn like shit comepared to everything else.
I was not going to post. But I think this thread is getting a little too far and getting way too personal. And since someone decide to strip my mod status for some reason, I cannot close this thread either. So I hope this response can clear something up.
Cheapshots is there for added value. You go and count and you will know the one or 2 pages of Cheap Shots are on top of the regular 22 plus pages we have. A normal comic is 22 pages. Some smaller companies did it with only 20. We always keep ours at 22, and sometimes more (like issue 9, we went nuts and make 28!) and without charging you guys more. We also pay Rey on the Cheap Shots, becoz I do like his sense of humor on stuff. I agree that this on-going search in SF Land thing is not as funny as what he used to do in his singles, and we are already going to make it back to a one page mini starting issue 14.
Ultimately - killing off the one or 2 pages of Cheap Shots will NOT give you more pages of interiors. Simply because it is not a budgeting issue we are dealing with by a work load issue. We have been putting in a lot of effort to keep up a certain quality and also publish the book on a schedule. And right now, that is what we can humanly possible to achieve in terms of output. Believe me, if we can do more, we will, coz that means, just from a financial stand point, we will make more mooney in a shorter period of time! But things has to be done properly. We have our bottomline in our standards.
The Capcom jobS set us back quite a bit, as I have said that a lot of times. Now that it is finally done done, what we are going to do is to crank up the gear and keep up with the book. It’s the catching up period
now, and you will see the difference in a few issues (at around 13 and 14 it will take effect).
You know we listen. And I am happy when I read your posts saying that each issue you are liking it better than the last. We are trying…
Well I guess if its a bonus and nothing would change with its removal, the fans of Cheap Shots can remain happy whilst it shouldn’t even affect those that dislike it.
