This stick cost me around 30 bucks to make it was pretty cheap. its decent and does the job as a second player controller. I also use an modded T5 stick for my other stick with a JLF and Sanwa buttons.
Heres a list of what i used for it:
The case was an old Battat art supplies wood box i had lying around, it was the perfect size for what i needed. It comes in 4 pieces. two outer shells, and inner trays. for this project i used inner trays. sanded them all down with 3 grades of sandpaper.
The buttons were hori buttons off the t5 stick which i soldered.
The pcb is from a Mad Catz controller
The Joystick is a POS Hori stick from the tekken 5 anniversary stick. (dremeled the gate to make it a circle instead of a square gate, also soldered 22 awg wires to it since it doesnt have its own pcb with a terminal)
Radioshack 8 pt terminal (for connection of wires between pcb and joystick)
Glue gun
1 can flat white spray paint, 1 can gloss white spray paint, 1 can rustoleum high gloss enamel
tape to tape off for paint
hardware from the art box for a case latch and hinges
1 inch hole saw
8mm drill bit for start select buttons
dremel, with sanding bits
sand paper - 340ou/p80(heavy), 150/100 grade(medium), 220 grade(light)
All together cheap project, ive left links and all there are plenty of youtube links and guys around here to help you figure out the wiring for your pcb.
I like the outcome of this. Its sturdy, fun and all around inexpensive. Cutting plexi for it soon might throw some art on there, but for now i like the simpleness. Give me some input for my first actual build/ second mod.
Looks really nice for a first attempt! Any chance of inside/wiring pics? Things that I think could be improved on the location of the start/select buttons and the mounting method/height of the stick.
The start and select buttons, in my opinion, are too close to the action buttons and would make for lots of accidental pauses.
The stick looks to be mounted much higher than the arcade standard, you could probably fix this with some spacers. Also those screws look like they might get in the way of the dust washer. You can find a whole bunch of info about mounting sticks here
Overall, I’d say you did a good job. Good idea using that art kit case, looks like it’s pretty solid!
i tried that idea already, the pins on the piece of crap hori buttons are waaay too small for any disconnects. and its a cheap ass hori stick that has the worse setup ever i would have to custom make any sorta of bracket or spacer the lower the stick. But it is definately mounted about an inche and a quarter too high, i will def look into that in the future though. But surprisingly the dust washer doesnt hit the screws during play, and i used an HRAP layout for the buttons which is why the start/select buttons are where they are.
i really only made this for a buddy who wanted a stick but didnt wanna fork out any kind of money for one so i used what i had lying around from old mods and made him chip in half.
i will put up pics of the guts in the near future.
Here is a picture of the internals. Idk why he wanted a ps2 capable controller but here it is. its modded with a madcatz turbo pcb and wired to a terminal. i had to solder all the wires on as i said before the hori buttons have smaller pins than sanwa and siemitsu. it works and turned out great all around and for cheap i got the controller off of ebay for .99 cents. cheapest build ive ever done. I want to dual mod this for ps3 capabilities but we will see in the future as for now he is using a usb adapter lol.
I will also include my Hori mod that i did in the past. the pictures dont have the current layout i have on there with the plexi because i took them right after the mod. I liked the color scheme on the hori and am looking for new ideas on the second case build art and theme. any thoughts would be appreciated.
