Anyone have a heat gun and some thermal compound? I need them to fix my PS3.
damn its been a minute since ive posted something…
any of you all doin some gaming tomorrow? i got an open schedule .
i dont have a heatgun but i do have some leftover arctic silver you could have.
y’all switch out good, good on the slims also. I’m will scoop up on when t6 drops.
jv i might have a gun and solder, Ive got this whole kit Josh’s best friend gave me.
I got that top notch weller soldering iron though, sounds like you need those tinny tiny tips though. :smokin:
They have just been using a heat gun to heat up the board and let the solder flow back into place. The PS3 has been getting so hot that the solder has been heating up and connections are being lost. Obvious design flaw. I think Microsoft and Sony planned this. Both systems started flopping right after the warranty period. I’m just gonna choose to believe it was a conspiracy. Whether it is or not. It makes me feel better. :looney::mad:
Sharp Aquos is whats up. Only LCD TV I can play Beatmania on. I’ll be down there probably Wednesday (maybe Thurs too, dunno yet) for some games. Also John, I’m bringing you my T5 stick.
Also, I won the Marvel tourney at XCon world, and that is sad. STRIDER/DOOM/CAPCOM SPAM ROCKS, GO! However, it was a very small turnout.
WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!:wtf:
the hell kinda engineering is that?
solder melting point = approx 400 degrees F on most electronics
dude, rome, if youre gonna try to reset the solder on your board i dont think you can just point the gun at the whole motherfucker and be done with it. a soldering iron heats up to melt solder around 600+ degrees (the ones in my lab are set to 725+). so to heat gun a whole board in effort to melt solder, without directing/aiming the heat, will burn up EVERYTHING (which is probably the real reason overheating is a problem) though i doubt things are reaching those temperatures during regular play.
the ic chips probably start to go wacky at way lower (but still hot) temperatures, achieved during play… but STILL… with a heat gun?.. be careful not to cook the whole fucking thing!
<— worked in the advance electronics section since '98. i dont have an engineering degree, but ive learned many lessons… and ruined a lot of equipment at someone else’s expense in last-ditch repair efforts
edit// if you are resetting soldering points, john is right… teeny tiny tips is the bizzness!! whole flow paths, though? superman vision type shit there… some cyclops shit
Mike if you are working in an electronics shop you have to have a reflow oven there. Hook a brotha up.
I have had a little electronics experience myself and have never heard of anyone doing reflow circuit board work with a soldering iron. Once a circuit board goes bad and you don’t notice any burns, corrosion or obvious disconnections it gets sent out for relow work. I have repaired motherboards, monitor boards and sound cards in the past.
I was kinda shocked when I heard people where fixing their boards with a heat gun to. I was thinking the same thing about the temperature not getting hot enough to unseat the components on the board , but something is going on. I’ve had to send a few laptop Mobos out for repair as well. I know any refurbished board is just reflow work. I think it can be done. I’m trying to find a reflow oven but it isn’t looking too promising.
ok… a reflow oven will work on a pcb with only surface mount components that were originally set in an oven anyway… ive never been inside a ps3 but im sure there are things in its board that will melt over 400 degrees (wires, plastics, harnesses, non smt components)… all those things that have to be removed. and if your not sure if a particular component was set in an oven, remove it just in case.
the lab at this base doesnt do component-level repair… some of my previous bases did… but here… my hands are tied bro.
but if you ask me… 400 deg is 400 deg… if you are dead-set on melting some shit, you got yourself a reflow station right there in your kitchen! 400 deg is 400 deg, right?! hahhahahha just check the profiles for all the components/board to see what temperature NOT to go over! (i keep saying 400 degrees, but thats a generality… solder reflow could probably work around 365 deg F)
How much is Sony charging to rework or replace the board?
I’m sure its more than possible for those things to melt during extended play, they probably used the cheapest shit they could find to seat the components. That shit probably isn’t even solder, it’s probably just hot glue gun LoL:rofl:
give it to me ill fix it over here heheh how much if u can not fix it
Who’s gonna be around Wednesday night? I’ll be down there!
I can’t believe I actually have to post this.
Was talking to Critty about trying to set something up for T6 midnight release since Gamestop is doing one. Come to find out, only THREE people have preordered the game from there, including me.
It’s pretty disgusting that people here will go out there to try and milk a free game, but they won’t support the store that’s helping support the scene by allowing us to run tournaments at will.
I’m not telling y’all where to spend your money, but a little loyalty goes a long way. If you like having tournaments here, then support the place that allows us to hold them. It’s not a difficult concept.
If you want to have regular tournaments, then how about scratching their back after they scratched ours? I know some of you are going to say, “But the games are paid for in entry fees, blah blah blah.” We’re running them there because it’s a form of advertising, and if all he’s getting it is an extra game sale or two, then it’s not worth it for them. If an extra twenty minute car ride is that much of a big deal, I’ll be more than happy to scoop your stuff up for you since I have to go out that way at least twice a week.
that’s ok, gamestop is getting it on the 20…but cant sell it till the 27! bs!
I was trying to see if PnT would be able to put the games in the systems @ 10pm and let those that preordered start playing then, and people that got there to buy it from them could show up @ 11pm, pay, then play while waiting for midnight to get their copy and go home.
Apparently, that’s like, a massive fine if they get caught opening and distributing it before hand. Ugh. We might have been able to do it and just kept eyes on the door to keep shifty people that might rat away, but with only 3 preorders, there’s no point.
I just can’t grasp how a company reaches out to help, and instead of supporting them, people support the one that won’t help at all.
We might be holding a midnight tournament @ PnT, but it might be for the loyal customers only. I’ll have to wait and see what they want to do. There’s a pretty bad taste left in their mouth after people doing them dirty like that.

No idea if those are the right commands, but omg
Normally I would agree with you, but, the last time someone ordered a specialty item like an arcade stick from them they didn’t come through on it. I don’t really care where I get it from as long as they are gonna have it on release day. Also I don’t ever remember getting anything free from PnT. I got a $25 credit from gamestop when I ordered my bundle. That’s a loyalty hookup right there. It’s always business when money comes into play. Especially in these hard times.
When was the last time Gamestop helped support the community by allowing us to run proper tournaments there whenever we wanted? As for the stick incident, that was not their fault in any way, shape, or form. That was all an issue with the distributor and being the little guy. Limited produced units like that are not a regular occurrence.
While they might not have helped you specifically, they’ve helped all of us as a whole by giving us a venue to test our skills. We had Tekken RanBats ready to get underway, and I was expecting these to actually keep going since there was apparently so much interest in Tekken while SF4 wasn’t holding people’s attention spans. However, with only 3 preorders, that’s not giving them a lot of faith in people showing up. They’re not a corporate giant, so it’s much harder for them to throw money away. People can only give so much before they have to get something back in return.
Again, far be it from me to tell anyone here where to shop and what to buy. That’s their money, they should do what they want with it. I just can’t help but feel terribly embarrassed that so many people here really don’t give a damn what the store has been trying to do for the community. The individualistic, self-centered nature of it is just appalling to me.
:wtf:
