You can’t have such percentages because people are allowed to use multiple characters. It would have been possible if the Evo signup forced you to pick one character. Then all they needed to do is tally. Even though Evo Japan allows multiple characters, I have a feeling that most Japanese players would stick with one. You might have a better chance there.
I realized counter picking might be an issue, but I was going to assume is was a small enough number to be ignored, or possibly, that they only used counterpicked in a small number of cases. But if they return to a certain character after a counter pick then that would be considered their “main”.
I was worried that character’s weren’t recorded during the tournament, and videos/word of mouth might be too daunting a task to track all the people in attendance.
Well, the top 32 were recorded at least. I don’t think the Evo staff want to waste their time recording character usage; especially while running a 1700+ SSF4 tournament. Maybe next time on the Evo signup, they may ask for the entrant’s main character.
I wasnt surprised, but was a bit saddened by Sagat absence aside from a few displays from LI Joe throughout the tourney. I think Floe may have also chosen him. Its amazing how much people have abandoned him and I think the eclecticism in the characters has largely to due with the fact that there isnt a general concensus as to who the obviously stronger and dominant characters are. I liked this EVO because, for the most part, winners in matches won due to outplaying their opponent, rather than match up logistics.
On another side note, I did not see one Balrog, and that REALLY surprised me. Maybe someone can shed light as to why. Sagat was obviously under represented due to his SSF4 changes, but Balrog is remained rather unchanged and from what I understand still stands as a strong character, yet he wasn’t represented.
IMO balrog is good, but he’s crazy over rated. I have no clue how Mago’s tier list has him as best in the game. He has a hard time against people with good zoning in their fireballs and a hard time against people who turtle.
