100% true. The more you play with the entire cast, the better you are with your main. Reason being: you will try things with other characters, and fail, and use what you have learned against those characters when the time comes.
this sums up why i hate the abel matchup:

I agree that Lolrog helps out with Guile’s harder matchups quite nicely. And he a charge character.
Since I main Claw and use Guile as a second, i’d definately say him…especially against Sagat
I absolutely hate fighting Sagats as Guile but using Claw increases my chances considerably, of course you’ve got to really know Claws advantages and erm…disadvantages too
Dee Jay.
i consider purple guile my main and if i face someone who gives me a tough time i sometimes switch to my secondary… which is green guile and hope for the best.
Because sonic boom damage is so laughable - that Abel has almost no fear at all in focusing through them and making an immediate offensive.
I do the same thing with my alt blue Vega and original black Vega!
Props to your strategy ;D
i have also realised that a GOOD turtle akuma is a horrible, horrible match for guile. i don’t mean the flowchart run away akuma’s…i mean players who know what they are doing. i couldn’t even get near this guy i played the other day.
I dont have a main, only secondary characters, as in I chose them randomly. I like guile, and have used him for a number of reasons… like him having AMERICA KICK… which isnt great, but funny still. I like honda, blanka, claw, and guile… I used to use cammy too, but i realized others had her mind games more than i did. anyways. I find that guile is a great mainer, just cuz of the testing the waters thing hes going going for him. I play him offensively mosttimes, and get people locked into his target combo into the corner and then shenanigans… but yeah i hard matchup for him i find is Dalsim… i cant get any damage on him
90% of my time online i versus japanese players since i lived in the asia :china: lol
i simply cant play with any of u folks over there since connection over to other end takes a millennium. so basically i played quite a few japanese akumas. like orange232 and kazuki4017. i rem their names since their plays are iconic. like ya say run away spammers mixups with dangerous get ins especially when u poke and whiffs.
some of the few effective moves i find effective against akumas, is jumping med punch. just before akuma does his air ball, u punch that mofo on the face right on! i tried toss in the air but if the akuma’s one veteran, believe me he can still time it and fireball u in the face. also if they have tendency to jump often, store ur ex booms for these. basically fire it off once u see them air balling, im thrill to see them landing on my booms as ex booms zooms pass air ball and gets akuma landing his ass on it. :smokin:
well, it takes alot alot of patience against these akumas that knows their game. so for guile, we gotta just stick and dogde those balls as much as we can.
Guile is my main since SFII and I find Honda to be a good second. Honda’s greater HP, damage output and different play style allow me to mix up things a bit against my regular opponents. If I were doing a tourney, I would stick with just Guile.

I’m curious to see what kind of lag I get with you (I think the link between AU and SG isn’t too bad) - up for a game over the weekend? I’ll add you if I remember.
bison is fun when the guile turtling gets old
what matches do you guys consider guile’s bad matches? be interesting to see if we all agree on the what level of “bad” certain matches are.
first, the obvious ones:
abel
rufus
ryu
sagat
zangief
akuma
then some would argue that guile can struggle against:
c.viper
balrog
chun li
ken
blanka
el fuerte
seth
gen
gouken
i personally struggle against bison for some reason, but everyone keeps telling me it’s 6-4 guile…so it’s 6-4 guile lol.
i think it’s fair to say that guile beats or at least goes even against:
e.honda
dhalsim
dan
vega
sakura
cammy
rose
fei long
only now when you put it into a list do you notice the huge upward battle guile faces on sf4. in my opinion it also shows without the console characters that guile is definitely low tier on the arcade version, rather than mid tier.
Guile has plenty of hard matchups. From my experience. my most difficult ones are
Viper
Abel
Ryu
Blanka
El Fuerte
Zangief
rufus
Akuma
Honda, dictator and vega are the matchups i have the least problems against. dictator will only kill you if you don’t execute proper zoning. Boxer is also a hard matchup generally, but I know this matchup pretty well.
Sagat is not so much a problem, even though i do lose in some very close matches. Once i gain a life lead, i just sit back and preserve my lead. in this situation, most Sagats will be burning EX bars on ex Tiger shots in a desperate bit to catch up. From experience, the good sagat players i have played against will use EX bars for projectiles and FADC a tiger uppercut. I strongly feel that the more patient player will win this matchup plus when Guile accumulates EX bars these are considered a valuable commodity Vs Sagat. i feel that this matchup is more than winnable, and still think Ryu is much more of threat
With the new characters coming out on SSF4, I will be very interested where Guile fits on the tier list, although I would believe it will be low to middle tier. One of the X factors in determining this would be how well capcom buff him up in the next instalment.
Some threads have mentioned about selectable ultras where guile can select the sonic hurricane or flash explosion for a the match. Wont know this until SSF4 is released.
PS this is probably gonna be my final post before I fly off to japan in the wee hours of tuesday morning :lovin:
Guile has some notable bad matchups, but Able, Zangief, Seth, and others aren’t really apart of it. Zangief is beatable but only though patience. The obvious thing to do is to play footsies, and try to bait green hands. Gief has to take risk here.
Unless able is rolling a lot (annoying), the matchup is even steven. Guile can zone Abel out all day, and on top of that, you CAN escape him if he get’s close. The same can’t be said for Gief.
Guile beats Seth pretty handily, and goes even with nearly all of the shotos. Akuma isn’t that bad. If your zoning game is one point this becomes a chess match. I think people try to chase Akuma, when you should be timing your sonic booms so he can land on them, poking him here and there, and waiting him out. Eventually Akuma will take risk in this matchup, it appears that he plays this matchup risk free but that’s the illusion. Just match his air fireballs with sonic booms, he’ll eventually start landing on them (no Akuma plays air fireball game perfectly), watch his jump angles, and counter poke him air to air whenever you see the opportunity. If you can dodge his fireballs enough, he’ll eventually have to come at you. and because Akuma’s are normally spending so much time on air fireballs, they almost always can be beat air to air.
Fuerte is a difficult matchup, but again, a lot of times you can go air to air with him, or turtle him out. Just be patient and look for opportunities to backdash him mixups. Oh and throw booms sparingly, you don’t want him getting free mixups. Against Fuerte I only throw sonic booms full screen.
Sagat is the only person I can think of who owns Guile completely free. I don't even have the same issues with Blanka anymore. Just zone him out, watch your distances, and see if you can force him to waste EX, and just turtle him out. I still think Blanka struggles against a turtle Guile, although I still think he has an advantage, it's not as loopsided as I use to think.
Guile has a shitload of even matchups, or matchups where he has a slight disadvantage. Though figuring out how to make these odds mesh with real life take a lot of experimentation. I, for the life of me couldn’t understand how Balrog vs. Guile was 5-5, but now I do.
I played a guy on PSN a couple times, unknownsoul005 or something like that. If anybody ever played the air fireball game perfectly, it was him. I couldn’t touch him for the most part. He refused to fight close quarters, air tatsu-ing away whenever I closed the gap (which took some doing). In fact, I don’t think he ever even hit me with a normal; He beat me entirely with air FB/red FB/DP on jump-in. But he was so good, I didn’t even get mad. I just sat there quietly. Anyone who wants zoning redefined for them should find this guy.
As for the rest of the Akuma matchup, all true as usual. But once you’ve seen videos of Tokido and Misse toying with Japan’s best Guiles, it’s easier to understand why it’s an uphill battle for us.
Who are the best secondaries for Guile in Ultra 1.04??
I run Vega and Hugo.
Vega has helped me A LOT. I feel a lot more comfy fighting Dudley, Seth, Viper, Fuerte, Adon, Fei… tons of others. Trick is, he’s not an easy character to pick up, and not having a proper reversal really kneecaps a lot of players. Plus, he’s more about mobility than Guile, so it can be a weird transition.
Hugo a play because I just love the big dumb bastard. However, I DID bust him out in our last ranbat, and beat an Adon I couldn’t beat with Vega. Then I played iPeru who has been bodying my Guile and Vega and did much better with Hugo… but I don’t think anyone should ever condone playing Hugo.
