Character Select Fan Art Challenge

Here is my Charlie.

http://members.cox.net/matthew.kloberdanz/Images/charliedies.gif

I just realised that Charlie takes off his glasses before he fights. Dunno why I always had the impression that he fights with his glasses on. Which is quite funny cuz the glasses is what makes him Charlie. That’s like having this Mexican guy with this cool sombrero hat on and you’re so pumped to see him in his sombrero action only to discover that he takes it off before the match…

…erm…

Btw chainwhore… just wana chime in to say that I don’t see my Rolento pic in your gallery? :wonder: Maybe you missed it so here’s the link again.

Hopefully one of these days I can join back in and do whatever the “character of the week” is.:bgrin:

Carefree: Hrm, not sure man. You might just google search to look for reference. I’ve been playing SF for like a decade, so I’m pretty familar with the characters, plus I have an artbook

MatthewK: Cool idea man. It’s nice to see pics that have a story to them. I think the perspective is just a bit off. We’re seeing the cliff from above a bit, but we are seeing charlier from straight on at his eye level. Also, watch how your elements align. Right now Bison kinda looks like he is standing on Charlie’s arm. Keep em coming dude.

Twleve: Oops! Terribly sorry, man. I try to be thourough, but I miss one every so often when I’m going through and saving the pics. Thanks for pointing it out. I’m fixing it right now.

Yeah. Perspective is not really my strong suit. What would you do to fix it? Put the edge of the cliff at Charlie’s eye level and move bison down, too? Thanks for the feedback.

here’s my quick bison. what he does to pass time. watching the home shopping network. I put some light colors so his hand will show more but i went too strong and its hella blending into his boots. Guess I should take my advice about have antoher smaler view while i work haha.

DF, that is tight as hell. Thumbs up. My favorite piece creatively so far.

Great work everyone!

I really wanted to contribute this week, so here’s my Dan.

And here is my Charlie…

heres my painter wannabe charlie haha. Actually it is painter with feyz’s brush. I have no idea what to do in painter. I sample the new color with opacity at 60 and when i lay a lighter color down the color is darker so I just select a new color everytime.

thx for all the comments & crit… it’s very useful (crit is always appreciated)

Switcher
shadows are nice but the highlights & midtones seem a bit washed out.
Looking much cleaner than your previous pics

Star
line tool? that’s really impressive man.
Newer version looks more detailed but also make Charlie look older.

VSlash
nicely done! I like the baggy pants effect but I don’t think his right pant leg should sag like that. I actually think the Sora boots fir the picture.

SFMC
it’s like you don’t even try but yet it still comes out good.
life isn’t fair…

Ron
I like the b/w Charlie better of the 2. Calm and collected Charlie fits him perfectly.
The coloured one is nicely rendered but I really wish I could see his face… I think the pic would work better that way.

ak-Umar
I’m liking your style… clavicle (collar bones) are pointing the wrong direction though.
check further back in this thread for Ron’s & Landel’s anatomy studies. I think they’re great and really useful.

vega-x
haha. funny  nice colour use.

MatthewK
beyond what Ron already mentioned, just want to add that Bison’s shirt should not reach down to his knees but end around the tops of his thighs.

DFist
WAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHA~! home shopping network Bison = too good.
very nice colours in that one, I think you’re really coming into your own man.

jz_chu
he returns! nice work on the facial expressions.
Some of the extraeneous wrinkles on Dan’s clothing detract from the image more than it helps… it seems like he’s got something under his gi that he shouldn’t have.

banditchain
nice and sharp Bison and Charlie pics.

venturi
the neck muscle under his chin seems to stand out a bit too much. Beyond that, the curve of his brow makes him look sad. Interesting approach, very painterly effect

sometimes I use http://www.sfgalleries.net/ for references. Just keep in mind that all sprites & character portraits should face left so as to get the correct orientation (with Gill perhaps being the only exception)

Thanks for the love everyone. I’m almost done with Zangief, redoing Rose, and I’ll be starting on Bison soon.

Ack. Working on Dan right now, will field a late Chuckles (I had finals that week) eventually.

Reminds me of the end of Conan the Barbarian. "Bison sits on his throne with a troubled brow."
Great pic.

I had originally been inspired to draw Bison “King Conan” style, bored on his throne by the Mcfarlane toy. I couldn’t quite pull it off, though, so I rethought my entry. So I especially like to see someone do that so well. I really like that version, though it looks like you had different inspiration, that’s the picture I originally had in my mind’s eye.

Some quick diagramatic critiques:

MatthewK, here’s an example of how the perspective might work out if you wanted to keep the eye level low with Charlie. Everything of the same height on your horizon line (eye level line) should line up. Meaning, since Bison’s knee and Charlie’s head are about the same height, and the eye level of the picture is at charlie’s head, bison’s knee should be on the same line.:

Sean, draw bigger. I’m gonna keep saying it, hehe. More room for details, more room for line weights. Charlie could use longer legs. Also, watch your head structure. The blue shows vertical spacing, the green shows horizontal spacing, and the red shows how the nose, upper lip, and lower lip relate to each other horizontally:

Venturi, watch your head structure. The diagram I did for Bandit’s critique applies here too.:

jzchu: Good to have you back, dude. Nice lines. I think you could lose some of the facial detail on Dan though. Some of the wrinkles seem too extreme for that facial expression.

DFist: Sweet stuff man. You’re developing quite a good eye for painting. I think the area to Bison’s throne’s right could go a little lighter rather than pure black. On Charlie, don’t be afraid to pop some more reds into your skintone.

Zangeif;

I can’t even identify this human being without the sling.:karate:

I guess I didnt put enough cranium to house that brain huh chain? ok Ill work on it somemore. I dont know why but I always shy away from putting too much forehead on my drawings…I think I try to exagerate too much. Ill keep studying!

Late entry.
