Hey guys, looks like we had another great week! I just updated the site.
Comments!:
CptMunta: It’s too bad you’ll be gone for awhile. If you still do the pics and post them when you get back, I’ll be happy to add them then. Although it’s not as fun as actively posting them here. Cool lookin Gen pic. Try studying drapery a bit, and try to make your fold lines more fluid and flowy. I totally dig the Zangief. One of the coolest Gief pics I’ve seen. I think I’ve mentioned this before when you posted your dhalsim, but this art has a really interesting underground comics aesthetic that I think is neat looking.
greyhoundbus: Good job catching up man! Great pics too. Nice job with the camera angle on the Ryu pic. Bird’s eye shots are hard to do. I love that you included his magic leaf that comes out of nowhere when he wins. I’d like to see some more line variety here too, like in your Dhalsim pic. I really like the sketchy style you used for that. Great elephant, and very amusing concept. The Gen is pretty sweet too. I think with the way you have it set up, it would be really cool to throw the entire front side of his body into shadow more.
Lexy: post your info for me so I can add you to the participating artists list.
Kandoken: Wow, dude. One of the best Roses evar. So beautiful, and so much additude. Hehe, although, I’ve got to pick on your hands. The rest of the pic is so well done, but the hands just don’t stand up to the rest. They don’t feel as structured, and to match the way you’ve drawn her body, I think they should be more long and slender.
DFist: Good stuff, man! You’re gettin good at that painted style. You’re definately on the right track, but it doesn’t look quite finished to me. It’s like 85% on the way to being a great digital painting. I think you could probably get away with popping in some more darks, especially in her shoulders. Maybe throw a cast shadow from her head onto her shoulder. Overall, I think adding little cast shadows all over the pic would be good for separating the elements of the pic a bit more. Good work!
Bandit: Lol, that crystal ball is pretty damn funny. Gotta clean up them inks though. Watch the way you’re highlighting too. Try to never use straight white for highlights, and think of highlighting not with lines, but with planes. Which side is the light hitting, and where would a shadow be cast? Don’t overdo it though. The black cast shadow from nose isn’t really necissary unless you’re doing really high contrast Frank Miller type stuff. That shadow could have been taken care of with color in a more subtle way. The ballpoint one is pretty intersting. I like the different take on the character. The cross hatching on the hair is flattening it a bit. Try to use marks that go in the direction of a bring out the way the hair is flowing.
Apathy: Cool sketch. I like the idea of puttin Rose inside a tarot card. I think the hatching you added is a little unnecessary. If it were more localized and focussed, it might add to the depth, but it seems a little haphazard right now. Always think about lighting and what sides would catch the shadows.
jzchu: Pretty cool. Watch your proportions, man. You slipped back into your big head small hands habit here.
With a cartooney style you can get away with exaggerated proportions more, but since you draw detailed and realistic, correct proportions are very important. Also, try not to put any short hairs that close to her head like you have it in the back of her head. Her hair is long, and shouldn’t have any ends there, so putting that gives sort of a mullet effect. Good stuff!
Teben: Lol, cool Akuma! Although totally out of place at the moment. I like the style though. You should join our challenge.
VSlash: Haha, the boob spillage totally cracks me up. They’re like big floppy shiny waterballoons. Try adding some more form to the hands. They look a bit too much like plain tubes right now. Add some knuckle definition.
Nokato: Very crisp and clean. Rose’s hair is kind of tricky. I think the way you have it drawin is just a bit too extreme. They large volume of it around and above her head, the spikey hairline, and the large curls in front of her ears is giving her just a bit of a wolfman effect. I had the exact same problem when I first started trying to sketch her. I would say, sleek down her hair so that it rests closer to her head, and make her curly things smaller. Also, a charactaristic usualy given to Rose that makes her look like her is high arched eyebrows. I’d like to see you keep doing this challenge, man!
It’s a good way to challenge ourselves to draw a bunch of different characters, each with thier own unique character quirks and body types.
EEK: Sweet deal, man. I already had the inked one from when you sent it to me. The painted version is cool too, but she lost her smile.
She’s coy and smiling in the inked version, but in the painting she looks like she’s all like “Ron, you’ve dissapointed me. Time to die.” Really diggin the Gen pic. Very dynamic, and great hands. One thing that strikes me as a little inconsistent is the front flap of his outfit. It isn’t flowing in the same direction as his beard.
HB: Very dramatic Gen. I like the way you have him fading into fog all mysterious like. Try adding some more shadows to the hair. Not just shading to show the hair details, but dark sides and planes to show the lighting and overall form.
Whew! That’s enough critiquing for now. Once again, I hope nobody is bothered by my comments. Just tryin to be a good host!
Anyways, here’s my Rose. I drew two of them, because I didn’t really like the first one that much:
