Character Balance Poll

He’s trying to relive his a.g.sf2 days, back when some people recognized his name (because he pontificated a lot while calling people stupid).

Don’t encourage him, man.

Many of them against you.

What’s that like, getting owned by someone who knows nothing about the game?

I wouldn’t say Guile is as dominant over Gief as is Honda (I won’t speak to the other matches, since I don’t know them as well). Guile does have an advantage, but the match is very winnable for Gief. Against Honda, I just don’t see how it’s winnable against an even a semi-competent Honda.

I wouldn’t advocate nerfing Honda, but I would like to see the non-fireball characters get some ‘anti-Honda’ tools. For Geif, I think a good addition would be having the lariat counter the torpedo. Honda would still have the advantage in the match, but it would actually require a bit more effort.

Zangief’s low jab beats Honda’s headbutt.

Do you know who he is, nohoho?

Thanks for the link!

I’m well familiar with it. :bgrin:

Not all the time, the headbut sneaks through and you will get hit and Honda will be way ahead in damage. I think people saying things like this never have played the match-up as Gief.

Jodim would use Zangief’s low jab very effectively to stuff headbutts and HHS so that nullifies pretty much the only offense Honda can do against Zangief. And because Zangief’s SPD range is greater than Honda’s Oicho coupled with the fact that Honda is a charge character, Honda has to turtle up big time to win that match. People will rip on Honda’s design because of that but it’s equally due to the design on Zangief.

But to be honest, I usually didn’t turtle up hardcore against Jodim (for the most part). I didn’t want to just ‘sit there like a rock’ one hundred percent of the time as the Honda haters would say. Not that I wasn’t trying to win. I definitely was but I was sometimes taking chances mainly with the jump straight fierce to bait him to get hit by a HHS but that gave him openings to get in as I wouldn’t be charged to do a headbutt. This is a risky strategy but honestly, I didn’t want to sit there and have the timer run out every round.

Jodim is scary good. His execution is unbelievable. He is easily the best Zangief I have ever faced (sorry Kuni!) and he often dominated some high level players on GGPO, espeically in matches where Zangief has a disadvantage. I learned a lot from watching and playing against his Zangief and have implemented it when I use Zangief and it has helped me tremendously when I face Honda. I can’t execute as well as he does but using his strategy I can now give Honda a tough time with Zangief. He made me realize that Zangief can win that fight if he gets one opening.

I’ve referenced our fights before in the Zangief thread: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=5844895&postcount=128

You should watch the Jodim links I linked to in the above post. Now, I’ve wondered if he is using a turbo button or not but he could just be that good at executing rapid jabs. Either way, it almost completely shuts down Honda’s headbutt and at the right range, Honda’s HHS.

His success at hitting the headbutt with low jab is good enough that it’s worth it, especially since it puts him in a somewhat good position afterwards.

Thanks for those replays, I lost them in a HD crash. Really good stuff.

Duly noted, didn’t know he was on XBL. I’ve played against him on GGPO and not won. Also I kind of forgot why I even responded to that.

And I’m definitely gonna play him until the patch comes out heh.

those are good replays man, but i think he is using tubo, those low jabs are hella fast for a human, but he is a good fighter tho.

I am going to say this once, because it may get me flamed. But any match where you have to spend the majority of your time spamming Jabs IN CASE someone does an attack (see Gief vs. Blanka and Honda vs. Balrog as well) is a really stupid match.

I mean a REALLY stupid match.

If that’s what it comes down to, I’d rather avoid the match all together.

And I doubt Jodim is using Turbo. I’ve seen some ridiculously good Jab mashers, one of which I am NOT.

If Honda could rapid-fire spam his jabs like Rog and Gief can, I’d use it against Rog and Blanka to stop their whiff-grabs off the dashe’s - as it is now, I randomly jab and throw out slaps

So I’m saying that Rog and Blanka have the same thing going - except most people cannot do that sort of things vs. Rogs dash, making it even better and more “stupid” as some keep saying than the sumo headbutt.

It’s not like it’s a sin from a character design perspective for someone to turtle without a projectile.

I agree that it’s not very interesting, but to be fair, that’s a big part of Street Fighter in general, isn’t it?

It’s just a form of controlling horizontal space, not much different from spamming projectiles. Some characters (e.g. Guile and Dee Jay) base their entire game around this kind of thing. Is repeatedly throwing sonics and max-outs that different from tattooing jab? Isn’t the objective similar in that they both involve limiting the other player’s options?

I’d like to see all this criticism of Honda directed toward Boxer, who is way worse. Super quick dashing attacks with virtually no recoil and no recovery time trump anything that Honda has.

Motherfucker, I’m not the one who quit out like a little bitch and cried to the whole room about O. Ken

I’m sorry your textbook scrub Chun tricks don’t work. St. strong X n -> throw only works so many times

If there are a certain percentage of players (let’s say 5%) whom own a high quality stick(because face it, this would not doable on a pad) fitted with very sensitive/responsive buttons, and also posses fast enough reflexes to mash jab and counter the torpedo 100% of the time, I would not look at this as a meaningful solution. I really wouldn’t even blame anyone for using Turbo(at least online) out of sheer frustration, until hopefully some kind of balance patch comes along.

However, the good news is that SFIV is on the horizon, and from what I’ve gathered the Gief/Honda match-up is much more even in that game, and that is something I’m really looking forward to.

Yes it would be very nice to have HDR patched with balance fixes, but in reality I opine that what is most likely to happen is that we will be getting bug fixes and trophy support, and that’s about it.

Sonofabitch!

Did I do that? Maybe I did. DP spamming can work pretty well when there’s lag.

OK now I remember! Yeah, that worked against you a LOT.

wtf is this childish namecalling shit?

Anyway, back on topic. I main Honda, and since release I’m starting to feel bored with him. I don’t feel he really loses vs ryu anymore. I beat ryus all day and night. This is potentially due to bad comp online. I’m not the best player, and some matches are totally, utterly braindead for him.

However, that doesn’t make him broken, as has been discussed. Today I actually decided to move on to playing Chun or Sim. It saddens me how terrible Cammy still is, to be honest. She has very little in the way of winning tools from what I can tell.

I don’t know what I think of akuma at the moment. His fierce DP is pretty stupid, and I am pretty sure when I used him for a while I could corner air FB into SGS every time. Again, I am no top player.

Isn’t this an admission that the Honda-haters are right? You play non-optimally because playing optimally is boring.

Projectiles do block damage and throwing them forces the action.

The problem with matches like Honda vs. Hawk is not that Honda is too good and wins for free, the problem is that the best strategy for Hawk is to sit there doing low jabs and the best strategy for Honda is to sit there doing nothing at all. Neither of those strategies forces the action, neither player has to move, it’s a contest of wills to see who can fight boredom off longer.

A significant percentage of Boxer’s matches don’t consist of him sitting on one side of the screen doing nothing while his opponent sits on the other side of the screen also doing nothing.

With Hawk I can walk forward and pretty much any button I press has a decent chance at stopping a rushing attack. And Boxer is easy to safe jump. It’s a fun, active match.

So we have Kurropi admitting that when he plays with Honda he fucks around because playing optimally is boring and we have Milo saying “I agree that it’s not very interesting” (to fight Honda) and these are the people defending him?

I know, right?

Yeah, you need to fight better Ryus.

Worst character in the game, although safer drills and saner special motions make her significantly more fun to play, now.
