Has there been a precedent for a CFE-style game? Where, instead of all characters working under a unified engine, they could work with what they all originally had? I can’t think of any off the top of my head.
Now I’m very well aware the characters don’t play 100% exactly like they did in their originals. There were some tweaks and changes made for the sake of better compatibility with each other: we all know ST Ryu doesn’t have ShinSho, A3 Karin’s cr. MP isn’t really that fast, DS characters had way more meter and Warzards… well, who the fuck cares about Warzards.
But the point seems to be a new style of game engine instead of what’s been previously tried, a diversified cast with their own options instead of global options they all adhere to.
Me and my friends have spent about the entire weekend with this game and we’ve all had an absolute blast. All of the characters feel really balanced and don’t seem to be missing much from their original incarnations. Who cares how it looks, the point is that this game is really fun!
I’m really astonished at the amount of graphic whores here at SRK. Give the game a try first and form your own opinion. I think a lot of you like to let your video game magazines make those opinions for you. The same thing happened to the EX series in my opinion: The video game mags didn’t like it, so we shouldn’t like it either, and it stuck. It seems to be happening here with Jam too.
I don’t mean to change subjects here, but I think it’s unbelievable at how much crap capcom gets for reusing even a single sprite, when if you look at KOF, at least 90% of the cast has been reused since 95, yet no one ever says anything of SNK for it. Sure…some have been redrawn slightly, like Athena every year, but if you look at Jam, both Zangief and Guy’s face’s and bodies have been touched up and redrawn a bit. It’s the same thing, so where does the hate come from?
I think a lot of you will be happy with this game if you’ll just stop being sheep, let go of your magazine/review web site’s hand for once and just try it out for a bit!
I’ve played it tons this weekend too in an attempt to force myself to like it. But Capcom defines fighting jam and their characters “…retain their unique movies so they’ll play exactly as you remember.”
That’s not even close. 3s characters have nowhere near the depth they are supposed to due to the limitations that the engine invokes. SF2 characters can’t link for a shit. SFA is more like A-groove. DS Warzard I can’t really comment since I don’t know them well enough.
My point is, the engine doesn’t allow this mash of games to work because they are so different. Capcom is making it seem like something it’s not.
Yup. CFE is easily way way better than SF3 was. SF3 was just not done or even close to it. Very little move variety (how many jumping normals did Alex have, 2? He had about 10 different attack animation total, it was pathetic) The characters played like the boss characters in SF2:CE. Re-used animations all over the place.
The special moves were terrible, parrys were way too easy, stupid inifinites, game dominated by a few dial-a-combos, very slow overall game pace…SF3 was fun for literally 5 minutes or so. It was just a tedious, dull game. How many times can you watch dive kick, jab stong fierce, palm thrust, roll kick super before you realize the game is crap?
To me CFE seems way better than either A1 or SF3 did. Both those games were pretty horrendously bad.
your average kof may have better or worse graphics, thats a matter of opinion based on taste, etc. they certainly look like they have had more effort put into them on the average id say.
besides which you just seem like one of those ppl who has a stab at the other side of the fence whenever you can.
Forgive me for saying this, but you seem like one of those people who think that if a character gets a new stance in KoF, they have completely new sprites. Not the case, bucko!
I only “have a stab at the other side of the fence” if the other company is guilty of the same thing. SNK shouldn’t have kept using that piece of crap hardware (MVS)…for fifteen…fucking…years!
I’m glad they moved on to AW, but their games STILL look like rehashes. Pitiful.
rehashing is happening across the board. from sammy, from capcom, from snk, from sega and from namco.
sure ppl think tekken 5 looks great but the fact is all the motion capture and base models are prolly the same stuff from however long ago. they just have to add some more polys or improve textures and bang youve got a “great improvement”.
nah im not a kof fanboy. i could give a fuck about new stances, costumes, music, etc.
for me its gameplay. yeah i love playing cfj with mates and in the cades but i still see a complete lack of effort when i look at the game.
the game that looks like its taken the most effort late 2004/2005, as far as im concerned its NEO BATTLE COLOSSEUM.
whyd i choose that one, well despite the fact im a neo fan (but even more so a fighting fan) i chose it becoz as i said above, it looks like its had the most effort put into it (though maybe tekken 5 has, im not the biggest tekken fan at this point so i couldnt say).
I’m no SF fanboy, but jesus! The amount of things people blame Capcom for is fucking ridiculous. Rehashed sprites? SNK does that too, yet nobody complains. Crappy music? GGX2 does this too, yet nobody complains. Rehashed gameplay? SNK does that shit with KoF every year!
So some of these people need to TRY to play CFE before they started shitting on it, 'cause shitting on it and not having played it is blind fanboyism, plain and simple!
well it seems to me they are shitting on it for what it is… i havent heard many ppl comparing it to other franchises recently. if they dont like it then thats their opinion and they are completely entitled to it. i didnt see why you included a kof reference in your post…
I think people are only happy in here when they get a new Vs game. j/k
If Capcom were to make a new Vs. game…Soley Capcom based, just by rehashing all the Capcom sprites from MvC 2, adding more from A3, DS, Red earth/wizard,ect…No new stages. I doubt anyone would complain, and the game would sell.
I still think they should resurrect all stars. Jam is fun but it is a lazy mugen, it would be nice to see something drastically different and allstars could have been that
sup dawg, i don’t want to write a novel or anything but i agree with what you’re saying…i do agree with margalis’s opinion on why sf3 was ass though - a lot of the problems were fixed in that game with 21 and 3s, but yeah, noone played the game at all until evo2k2 and suddenly it’s the greatest game ever.
nethertheless, you know i aint no fanboy of any company…i’ll continue to play the game until i get totally turned off by it. i just hold the sentiment that capcom should have put a lot more effort into it. that’s all. i think everyone will agree on that, even if the game turns out to be good.
capcoms first games in their respective series always turn out to be ass in retrospect. hopefully cfe2 will be the best game ever!!!1111
