Cerberus: Unleash the hellhound in your arcade stick

No worries, it happens to all of us at one point, hah. The underside labels will be fixed in the next batch so this type of thing should be easier to avoid.

Next batch should actually be out of assembly towards the end of the week, after that it’s a matter of me finishing them up. Should have more available to focusattack mid week next week I’d say.

Well, swapped those points I got wrong… but

Plugged the stick in the xbox. Intermediately player 1 indicator lits. Fired VF5, checked all buttons, RS, LS, DPAD, everything is ok. Turn off xbox.
Connect the stick in the PS3 now. Player 1 indicator led turns on. So far so good. At menu screen I was moving around, prompting menues, all buttons seemed to be working alright… then suddenly no response at all. unplug, replug, leds flashes briefly but no response. Go back to xbox and same things happens. Go to PC, and again same thing.

My first thought it was some wire got unsoldered or torn, so I checked everything with the multimeter (again). Everything is ‘ok’. I just don’t even… =/

Outbound USB cable issue, almost guaranteed.

Plug it in with START held down, do the LEDs cycle?

Now, yes, it does the LED cycle thingy. Connected all things down again and it works fine on all 3 platforms.

So, in essence my USB cable is fucked up. Well replacing it should be a problem. In fact I was having the idea of attaching a female USB plug to the case, so I could use a male-to-male USB cable

Just make sure you zip tie the shit out of it in either case so that the connection directly to the Cerberus board doesn’t move at all even when the cable outside of the stick is wiggled. Strain relief is your friend on that connection, and give it a little bit of a straight output before bending it to go outside of the stick (in your picture the USB cable is literally bending the 4 wires at a 90° angle).

Even giving it like an inch of cable running against the case wall to a zip tie anchor, zip tie it tight, and then make the turn to go outside… should save you some hassle in the long run.

Yeah, I was running out of cable to be honest. I’m currently doing all that. Thanks again, man.

Aaaand I did it. Last picture of how it ended up. Could be a bit ghetto looking with that female usb plug, but the important thing is it’s functional on the 3 platforms

Phreak, any news on the new batch?

Somewhat off topic but, is the direct plug compatible with a brawl stick pcb?

ETA is longer than I anticipated, early next week, I’ll try to have FA restocked by the end of next week.

The direct plug in is not compatible with the brawl stick PCB, you’d need to do what FakeSypha has done or similar, but a solder connection would be required.

Okay, one more question about the direct plug. Is it not compatible because it does not line up or because it’s something to do with how they are wired.

The Brawlstick PCB is unique and made differently to the TE-S PCB.

Installed a Cerberus on my SCV TE yesterday (thanks to @gahrling for pointing me toward the board!). Very easy, even with the traditional #3 pin-bending taking place, and seems to work fine on both consoles.

With the above comment in mind, however, I just wanted to check my installation would be okay (it’s my first time doing anything more complicated than swapping sticks and buttons). I have the USB cable looping around (and zip-tied to) the post after enetring the stick, as it did before I cut it. The strain-relief dongle is in place, and the cable is then zip-tied to the plastic shelf of the TE…

I’m now just concerned about the bend in the wires (I can’t pull any more cable into the stick because of the grommet thing hitting the inside of the cable compartment) - will the measures I’ve taken be okay as far as the cable not moving too much? I think it’ll be okay, just want to check before I close the top properly…

Cheers!

That should be fine, it’s what I do. Since you’re secured at the front where the USB cable comes into the case there should be very little movement. On top of that, you’re going to the IDC terminals, whereas FakeSypha was soldering directly to pads that can be torn if jarred the right way without solid strain relief. I’m fairly OCD about it doing installs when it comes to that, but in the normal installations… what you’ve got is plenty good.

@Phreakazoid Thanks for the reassurance - just wanted to make sure (and thanks for such an easy installation - since I’ve managed it is now conclusively shown to be foolproof!).

hey phreak i just received a new cerberus and this time around it shows that it is connected to the pc and it reads the buttons and everything when i go to its properties in the control panel (good news) but the xbox light still doesnt come on when hooked up to the 360/ps3/PC. I even held down LP and nothing comes on. any suggestions?

Post up some pictures of the install if you can please.

Also, does the 360 side come up in the properties/work?

When you plug it into your PC with START held down, do you see the player LEDs cycle? It’s possible your ribbon cable just isn’t in all the way.

hey phreak thanks for all your help man, i got the light to come on with the LP button now and the LEDs cycle when holding start so this product works. the lights also come on when i plug the stick in the xbox and ps3. now Im just having trouble getting the down motion on the JLF to work but im sure there is probably something wrong with my wiring.

Would anyone recommend this to someone who has never done a mod before (Not even a button mod)?

I can move down on the ps3 but it doesnt work on xbox or pc.

Again, I managed it so anyone can.

I had switched buttons and sticks before, but that was it. The trickiest bit is stripping a wire - it really is that easy.

Maybe have a look at the installation instructions (http://www.phreakmods.com/products/cerberus/cerberus-install) and reassure yourself?

My God - I’m not too shabby with a soldering iron, but I’d kill for skills like mr.mortified’s and gahrling’s on pages 3 and 4! :open_mouth: of course, I can’t end this post without mentioning Gummo’s insane skills as well.
