Captain America: The Winter Soldier thread

Nick Fury in the Ultimate Universe was based off of SLJ, which is how he got the job for the Marvel movies in the first place. It was a clause for him lending them his likeness.

The only problem i have with whitewashing was when asian characters become white people

Oroku Saki, now white
Only indians and white people in that shitty last airbender

Okay, i just blame that completely on M. Night Shymalan.

The ultimate universe is generally speaking a bad idea that no one should be taking cues from save for a handful of ideas and concepts.

My enjoyment of a film won’t be ruined because wolverine is lack with a heavy African accident but it does make it hard to focus on the portrayal because now that he’s changed at the base I’m more alert on the change and less on the performance.

Ultimate Universe had some pretty good stories mainly the first two Volumes of Ultimates and the entirety of Ultimate Spiderman. After Loeb got his hands on Ultimates though, the series shit the bed until Hickman cleaned it up and wrote some good stories. The Ultimate Universe plays a huge role in these MCU movies.

I enjoyed ultimate spiderman and certain segments of the ultimate universe but ultimately it was a wash for me…some things just didn’t need to happen. I get the whole point was to welcome a new audience to a less complicated universe but still.

The MCU seems like a mixture of the ultimate universe and silver age era.

Days of Future Past turn Blink into a Asian. I don’t mind one bit.

Scott should be a Mexican.

Edit: he’s been a revolutionary type in recent years so maybe Cuban instead.

No matter what his race, Scott still sucks unless it’s MvC2. :coffee:

(For the record, @Unreallystic, Storm is mixed. She’s like…a fourth white or something. The real problem is more than Halle Berry is a completely overrated actress and they should have gone with Angela Bassett from the get-go. I suppose it’s a good thing they didn’t since she got to avoid that clusterfuck…before getting dragged into Green Lantern in a role that should have gone to CCH Pounder. Sigh.)

Yeah, if anything, whitewashing happens way more than race-lifting in the other direction and whitewashing unfortunately happens to Asian people the most.

looks at Cloud Atlas and 21 among other things

Asian people probably have it the worst in Western media really. Sure, there are entire Asian countries with relatively thriving media markets, but Asian people are basically all but invisible in other media unless they’re being stereotyped or lusted over by white guys and those things often overlap. Hell, it’s gotten to such a point that even Asian directors tend to do themselves like with the aforementioned Avatar: The Last Airbender movie or that horrible live-action King of Fighters movie that “randomly” made Kyo hella white (and yet kept his father Saisyu fully Japanese).

It’s part of why I’m still kinda surprised at not only how Avatar: The Last Airbender the cartoon got to be so popular since it wasn’t outright anime even though it had only Asian-looking characters, but also that there was rather loud uproar of “Aang/Katara/Sokka is not white!” as soon the movie got announced. Given how Asians do get treated in media, though, it’s part of why I wasn’t surprised M. Night Sham got his Uwe Boll-esque mitts on it the first place.

I mean, geez, at least Black people get to be token characters if they’re not stereotypes and the same is increasingly true for Latino/Chicano/Whatever-you-care-to-call-yourself people. Meanwhile, Asians of no type (of which I include Arabs, Persians, Native Americans and Indians since “Asian” is already a stupidly large category anyway) don’t ever show up at all except for the two type of roles above, with the only real other notable exception being Green Hornet (and even then Kato is a bit of a stereotype) and Bruce Lee in general.

And, yet, for all the uproar and discomfort over making white characters not-white, I never really see nearly as much about the opposite even when it’s glaring obvious. You think it would cut both ways, but apparently not, which isn’t surprising, but seems hypocritical even if I can agree that they should accept the best person for the role rather than looking for race for the get-go; unless, of course, “race” or nationality or ethnicity (or sex) is actually central to the character, which it usually isn’t.

So, personally, as weird as it would be initially, I’d take an “all ethnic X-Men” so long as the plot was done well and the actors did the job well. (Besides, the examples you use a pretty bad anyway SoVi3t given Wolverine is basically Japanese already anyway and of the original X-Men, Scott, Jean and Hank could easily be made non-white unlike Bobby or Warren. Only Storm’s ethnicity is important to the character and that’s less because she’s “black” and more because she was worshiped as an African goddess for a while and has strong types to Egypt in her backstory. I guess you could still make her “Asian” though if we’re counting Arabic as Asian.)

MKJ? …Wait, they were making another Fantastic Four movie? …When? …Why?

lol wut? african accident?

youngins/noobs. mvc2 cyclops is straight up F tier garbage compared to XVSF cyclops. so basically scott still sucks unless its XVSF scott, then punishment is at its fullest.

Okay, EVERYONE was damn near S-Tier in XvSF, that’s not saying much. Even Ryu was worth a damn in that game.

so does that mean everyone was balanced lol

In a way only the Vs. Series can do it. Though Wolvie at the time was on his “I dominate all Fighting Games” kick.

At the rate the movies keep changing comic continuity I won’t be shocked when this becomes a actual scene.

(Yeah, XvSF was pretty damn busted, but at least everyone was busted in it, 'cept for maybe Zangief; I wouldn’t be surprised if he was, but given how bad he was in later games…)

The above showing up in any movie would require a) Marvel to actually give a damn about Cyclops (which they’ve only done recently), b) Fox to actually give a damn about Cyclops (which clearly isn’t the case given all the X-Men movies so far), c) America get over its homophobia (haha) and d) Hollywood to realize America has gotten over its homophobia despite how gay Hollywood is (haha). Stop fretting about non-issues.

He’s Canadian, you ain’t taking that away from us!!!

Gief had toD combos in XvSF too…oh and good enough priority to actually land them.

However Wolverine just played the entire game in A-Groove…

(Oh, I see.)

All this XvSF makes me want to check out Youtube to see if there are any good videos of it. All I remember is that I used to play Rogue and someone else. Cammy? Hmmm…

Hey, you’re the one who brought it up. I couldn’t care much less about the guy’s nationality given how much I dislike him. Besides, even if Wolverine magically changed nationalities tomorrow, you could probably still claim he emigrated there after becoming disgusted with Japan or something. Even if you couldn’t, then you would still have Alpha Flight and not all of them are jobbers.

Naaa they gave Wolverine a good enough Canadian historical background. Upper Canadian (aka British decendent) from the wilderness of 1800’s Alberta. Also pretty sure he was Canada’s first superhero, or one of.
