What? We do have a dedicated group of players. We’ve had about 10 tournaments this year alone so far, which is about one per month or so. We have people in the community who have been running tournaments in various different games for several years. So manpower isn’t an issue.
If people fly in from all these different places such as Japan, California, etc. I’m sure they don’t want to spend all that money and see the same city twice. There’s more to a tournament than staying for two days and playing SF4. A lot of people would want to explore the city for a few days before or after. That’s why it makes more sense to have the location vary - it will add value to the trip. Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal are all great choices, but in general most players haven’t seen Vancouver yet (especially east coasters) so it would be an experience. Usually people come up from Seattle to play in Vancouver tournaments and players here go down to Seattle, but that’s pretty much it. So it’s something new.
Montreal is French though so it might discourage some people from coming. So I’d say Toronto or Vancouver. They’re the closest cities to the US too.
I agree with DaDesiCanadian’s post. While I don’t believe it necessary to “re-brand” with proper planning and co-ordination we could just have another major called “Canada Cup East”.
Canada Cup should always be held in Montreal. If you understood the history of SF in Canada you’d realize that Montreal is the only place to hold something like that. On the international stage Montreal has always been the ones representing Canada. Does anyone here remember Arcadekid wearing the Canadian Flag running around as Captain Canada? JFL beasting on Ricky? Prez winning ECC?!?! Veasna, Freddy Loco, Tony the legendary Greedy Greek, Sam the marvel legend, the list goes on and on. You even have Chi-Rithy owning up the scene now. You’ll also get some of the top players from Toronto there as well and of course the one and only JS Master. Depending on the games that you run, you have access to a massive player base of some of the top players in the country as well as one of the most entertaining cities in the country.
2 pages in and i want to fucking kill everything. Thread needs to be closed.
I SAY EDMONTON. WEST EDMONTON MALL HOTEL, lol just kidding it should be at boston pizza’s
OK my thought:
CC West in Calgary or Edmonton, somewhere in AB because taxes everywhere else are gay!
CC East in Toronto or some shit, I don’t care I probably won’t go lol.
If only one CC put it back in Calgary or move to Edmonton, I say Calgary but Edmonton would be cool because I wouldn’t need to go far lol.
fuck i don’t want to read this thread and hate canada but i will.
Fair enough. I had no idea Ottawa was so poorly represented by their sf community.
I don’t even think I have to say this lap but splitting up the Canada Cup name would be like splitting up the Olympics between two countries in the same year. Twice the money and time invested and less than twice the likelyhood you would break even. That and there wouldn’t be wc coming out to ec and visa versa. If TO is so hard up for a name change then do it up. You don’t need lapchi’s permission to call yourselves king of turd island. What you really need from lapchi is his resourses and suggesting he split his time and double his investment is a little rediculous.
I did have a long post for this thread but I deleted because I thought people were getting on the right track but now the thread is getting de-railed again.
You guys that are posting cities aren’t provided good enough support to convince Lap Chi to hold the tournament in that location. Most of you probably didn’t even read the first post and Lap Chi’s list of requirements before posting. Stop trolling this thread with your own city for whatever reason and start getting together in your communities and put in the time, effort, and finances to prove to Lap Chi that Canada Cup 2011 should be held in whatever city you want it to be held in.
East Coast this is your chance to actually do something about this instead of shitting on Canada Cup 2010 and the tourney organizers. Simply stating your city has better players doesn’t cut it because quite frankly that wasn’t the point of Canada Cup 2010. A lot of people missed this but Canada Cup 2010 also had a goal of uniting the Canadian scene and instead of the West and East Coast coming together for it you have people from both sides arguing over something as trivial and selfish as where the tournament should be held and what the tournament should be called or how Canada looks on stream. Stop caring about all of that because your being counter productive to the Canadian SF scene as a whole. If you guys claim that you know what is best for the Canadian SF Scene then put your money where your mouth is and step up and do something instead of slinging stupid arguments and trolling one another.
West Coast if you can’t be productive either then just shut up. If you want CC to be held in Calgary again then prove why or if you don’t feel that it should be in the East Coast then provide some logical explanations why instead of “fuck the haters”. If you hate that East Coast is calling us free then level up your skills and prove them wrong. If you can’t do that then none of you have the right to complain. For the record though Calgary has proved themselves that throwing the Canada Cup in Calgary was a success by the amount of people that showed up and how smoothly the event ran.
This isn’t exactly what Lap Chi wanted when he made this thread. He actually listened to all the concerns that the East Coast made and is actually making an effort to address it the very least that everyone in Canada can do is show some respect and help him out. For all the complaints that were raised from the East Coast a lot of you aren’t exactly doing anything when the opportunity is being presented to you so readily.
Personally, I think Canada Cup should alternate between major cities every year so as to not have these kind of disputes between the Canadian scenes. I know the tourney organizers aren’t trying to alienate any particular scene but you have to understand that throwing a major like this goes beyond player skills. Some of things that need to be considered is that a city has something for the players to do outside of the tournament. Look how much Gootecks, Mike Ross, and Justin Wong enjoyed Calgary. Can your city do something like that as well? A little thing as showing great hospitality to foreign players makes a lasting impact and will make it more enticing for other high profile names to showing up because it goes beyond skill level of the competition. Also, the date of the Canada Cup needs to be changed so that it’s nowhere close to winter. We got off really lucky with the weather for CC2010 and I’d rather not have people get put off from coming because of the weather. This is some of the research that needs to be done by each respective community that wants CC to be held in their area. If you guys can’t even do that much then you really don’t have the right to say anything in this thread.
I really need to talk to tournament organizers in all the major cities to see if they event want it in their city that would be a great start because I don’t want to compete with them.
How many people will attend if it was in their city?
Hotel venue pricing and cap?
What kind of support and staff are availible?
What international players can we attract?
Is the City ok with $35-40 venue fees?
I don’t want to turn it into some type of bid like the Olympics but The Canada Cup can provide all the funding, we would like to just break even at least. Theres probley more questions to ask, and we should talk to the current tournament hosts for their cities before jumping into anything.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts as well. I think it should be allowed to establish itself even moreso before uprooting to a different place, whatever the balance of SF playerbases on each side. Calgary is more than good enough. It’s expensive to travel anywhere in this huge-ass country, so somebody’s will end up whining no matter what.
Also, it’s his capital, but I don’t see why having two CC’s should rest on Lap Chi’s laurels, he’s not accountable to make everybody happy with respect to SF, nawmean? If he wants to, that’s great, but he shouldn’t take any flak (not saying I’ve seen it yet anywhere) if there’s only one. Let an established tourney re-brand itself, and let promising, budding ones get their fair chance.
For the first run of a tourney on that scale, I don’t see people could be disappointed other than being jealous because of not being able to go (like me T_T).
While I like the idea of not having to travel by having it held in Vancouver, I’d rather see it stay in Calgary. Someone’s going to piss and moan no matter where it is, so why not just leave it where it is now? Besides that, they’ve already proven that they can run an efficient and enjoyable event, so I don’t see the reason to gamble by handing it over to another city. While I’m not all that familiar with the eastern scene, it seems they already have large-scale tournaments of their own over there already. Western Canada doesn’t/didn’t have anything like that until CC, as far as I’m aware.
