Can you turn a digital joystick into an analog?

Hello, I’m very new to the concept of joysticks but I thought it would be a fun project to make an arcade stick for Super Smash Bros. Melee. I know this topic has been discussed before but none of the previous threads had what I looked for. My question is if I can take a usual joystick and turn it into an analog joystick by adding pots/ hall effect sensors and magnets.

Any input is appreciated.

Are you playing on an emulator or original hardware? You’ll have more options if you’re using an emulator.

I need it to work on original hardware as I am planning on using it in tournament.

Anything’s possible if you have the time and money.

That being said, what you want to do is possible, but not trivial.
Sure, you can put in magnets or hall effect sensors, or use optical sensors, but you’ll still need to add in additional hardward/code to be able to decode what you’re adding into definitive Lx and Ly signals that could be read by the analog inputs on a PCB.

The problem, of course, finding a PCB that works with it, since you’re gonna have to dump your existing PCB.

@d3v I thought these were unavailable now. Do you know where I could buy one?

Sadly, no.

unfortunate

This controller was specifically made by hitboxarcade for smash.
