This is the best Bipson concept since CvS2 Bison. Bison always evolved with each game and showcased his special move potential, but here it’s like we are getting the long awaited SF3 Bison remake, or better yet we ar getting the best of all his incarnations in one version. Sure the walkspeed is painful, but he makes it look so easy. In the context of SF5 and the V system, Bison got it really great. Everyone who says otherwise is just jelly!
Runner ups:
Fallen Knight/Two Face/Harvey Dent Nash. Fucking finally. A little on the nose but it’s bold, interesting, and exactly the character needed after a long hiatus.
Birdie and Karin are also boss redesigns. Ken is gameplay-wise but falls short because of face and hair.
Worst redesign is Vega, his moveset lacks vision and I am not referring to motion inputs. It just feels like unfulfilled potential.
Cammy is my runner up for least favorite redesign. Just lacks vision and conservative.
I dig Karin’s redesign but don’t like her sporting those leggings because it looks too similar to Rose’s iconic leggings. Give her normal pants or something.
Well maybe it’s time to update Rose’s default look then? Besides, you’re saying this like it’s unusual for Capcom to have characters wearing similar outfits (pretty much every shoto)
At this point, I expect every character to be announced after that to receive some sort of redesign.
What characters were redesigned in Street Fighter IV? Only Gen and Evil Ryu, IIRC; and Ibuki got bigger boobs.
But I think this time they’re trying to finally show some “passing of time” for the characters, at least for the older ones (SFII and Alpha). Maybe they didn’t do that with Chun-Li because they are the protagonists and they were the first ones to be announced and they wanted to “play it safe” with them, but I still take their announced alternate costumes as their “true” redesigns to fit along with the mood of the rest of the roster.
Probably the SFIII and IV characters won’t be redesigned because the proximity with those games, in the timeline sense, and because they aren’t veteran/well-known/famous enough characters.
Yeah that whole Iconic/classic excuse has been used up. If MK series can change their characters up and still keep that iconic/nostalgic feel to them. Why can’t Capcom do it with Street Fighter?
Franken-Nash is awesome, such a cool way to bring back a dead character. Instead of the cliche evil spirit or clone route, they straight up brought him back as a horribly scarred reanimated corpse. That’s fucking sick.
Ken - 10/10 Love the redesign, both his look and gameplay. They just need to keep polishing his hair/face.
Bison - 10/10 Love it, love it love it. I even love his terribly slow (but intimidating) walk speed. And this is from a guy that had trouble using Ken in SF4 before he got a walkspeed increase. Everything about Bison in this game just screams “Fuck with me you will DIE!!!”
Chun 9/10- Perfect iconic design, but was acceptable some tweak
Charlie 9/10- FrankeNash look awesome imho, great redesign both as redesign and visual moveset
Bison 8/10- Not so fan of white hairs but as a whole it look great, specially thanks to new visual moveset, btw lose the psycho crusher as common special is kinda a loss for the char appearance as a whole
Karin 7/10- hate her design, but at least is’nt schoolgirl version
R.Mika- 6/10 without hearts look a lil more plain (btw moveset redesign is awesome)
Cammy- 5/10 without scar/triangle/camolegs look a lot more plain, the black belts don’t compensate. big plasticboobs look strange on her. At least they fixed the face
Vega- 5/10 not an improvement. Also -1 because why the fuck they did’nt keep him brown hair, there are already 18 blond chars
Birdie- 4/10 fun but Alpha version was waaay better
Hm, having played Ken I don’t feel he was ‘heavily’ redesigned. He plays the same as the biggest change is a new animation and set of properties on his RH hurricane. Other changes are all fairly marginal and his v-skill is interesting and will make him more aggressive, but he still has a shoto style to his play. Ken also seems pretty good design wise outside of his face and hair, but they redid Cammy’s face so maybe he will get a face rework also.
Honestly, it seems like whoever modeled a lot of the SFV cast just makes all hair like it is made from play dough. This is evident in Ken, Karin, and Vega to the most. Wish they would go for a polygon style realistic looking set of hair instead or at least do some texture mapping to not make it look stupid.
Personally I only have issue with Karin’s redesign, really only her and Charlie/Nash are different characters. The core game play is very similar or an improvement on their old game plan for every other character. Most of the changes are aesthetic with a new mechanic to their game via v-skill / v-trigger. Charlie was changeable because he was literally a guile clone, so giving him a new move set is understandable because eventually Guile will make it into the game. Karin was the only character who was imo gutted and not given interesting stuff in exchange for what they took away. Also she is the ONLY character to have her most iconic move taken away from her and made her v-trigger which is kinda a slap to the face. Your most iconic special is now only usable in v-trigger?
