If you have a backwards compatible PS3, install a Cthulhu board in the TE and be done with it. There is no need for a dual mod, unless you want to use the TE on an actual PS2.
People who are aware of input lag do not use the PS3 to play timing-sensitive PS2 games, that’s the problem…
Actual (lagless) adapters, rather than messing with boards and what-not, would really make a huge positive impact.
The only really sensitive PS2 game that I ever play is SF3, and I stopped playing that on PS2 ages ago when I discovered that my PC can run the PS2 and Dreamcast versions at full speed through emulators.
Well, the fact he wants to use his PS3 TE stick to play PS2 games kinda hints at a reasonable chance of desiring to play fighting games or even shmups.
PS2 shmups do not work well on emulators. The best solution unless you want to mod a stick is to buy a HRAP 3 or PS2 stick. Granted, it’s not too hard to add a PS1 PCB like everyone is saying. It may be more than you bargained for if you aren’t familiar with soldering.
There’s probably not enough of a commercial incentive for someone to make a USB to PS2 converter unless someone wacky like ToToTEK did it. How many do you realistically think they would sell? I can’t think of any converters that have gone backwards a generation.
I would speculate that most ‘normal’ people have the attitude of: ‘Why the hell would you want to play a PS2 game when the PS3 is released?’
That’s not entirely true. Most of the 2D games in general seem to work fine in PCSX2. 3D games is where PS2 emulation still struggles. And in some cases, if you can find a Dreamcast or Gamecube version (e.g. REZ and Soul Calibur 2), you’ll have much less problems running it in Dolphin or nullDC.
Indeed. For games like Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur 4, you’d be silly to believe there was something better about the previous games, when the sequels are essentially the same game with more characters. Capcom seems to be the only company that would release a sequel whilst dropping almost every character from the previous game.
I miss playing as Dudley.
My problem is that the shmups I play are the Cave games (Mushihimesama, Espgaluda, DDP) are too time critical to run pretty well.
I’m glad 3rd Strike plays awesome on the 360 via backward compatibility.
I don’t know about numbers, but I believe most fighting and shmup gamers who play on the PS2 would be interested. Such an adapter could be advertised on other fighting game forums too (I know three brazilian ones). The PS2 is a huge success, despite its age.
Well, perhaps if the adapter targetted multiple platforms, as suggested, it would be more commercially viable. I really wouldn’t mind purchasing a lagless Xbox360-PS3-PS2-DC-GC -> Xbox360-PS3-PS2-DC-GC controller adapter. It would be the end-all solution.
is this an issue so far with the pcb’s in the madcatz te / se only? I have both the te and the hrap3 and only tried playing a ps2 game with my te and assumed I was screwed. Please confirm that an HRAP3 will work on ps2 games played through a ps3.
Do you have a link? If you’re using two different usb plugs, it would definitely exclude dedicating one usb wire with two pcbs. Otherwise I’m calling anecdotal on this. It’s not a really a dual mod, more like two separate pcbs running diffferent lines on the terminal strip.
Not Toodles but here you go: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=4651896&postcount=33
How is it NOT a dual mod? Its pretty much the exact situation that started the whole dual-mod thread…
And Toodles chimes in two posts down… http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=4651956&postcount=35
Anyone attempting this mod should read the shit out of that thread. Anything you ever wanted to know.
Sigh
As you can see, those controllers are using one plug into the system. If there is two pcbs with 2 separate plugs, you don’t need to solder it onto the vcc or ground UNLESS you are dedicating only one plug for the controller. Anyone in their right mind should know not to use 2 plugs in two different system at once. Each plug is already powered by the pcb already since there are 2 separate plugs. The only thing that needs to be done is to hook up the signal wires on the terminal strip.
XBOX and ps2 don’t use the same plug…
Ninja edit: thanks for the neg rep you are awesome
Theoretically, if you built a Parallel port->PS2 adapter, and used a very tiny PC with a parallel port…
You’ll probably have some lag issues.
Since you are paralleling two boards to one set of buttons with both boards connected to the same common ground, yes you would have to wire together the VCC’s on both boards. The fact that they are both using different cables doesn’t matter. You have to power both boards or else you’ll get weird inputs.
FML, I don’t know anything to do with modding… I want to mod my PS3 TE stick for that I can use it on my PS2…
