I have to say that without the pantyshots and bouncing boobs, this game would have had a much higher level of interest from more varied people.
I originally dismissed this game and scoffed at the notion of playing it. Of course then I learned more about it. But not everybody gets the chance or takes the time to actually check out what is behind the development of the game or watch more videos when your first reaction is to roll your eyes.
First impressions mean a lot sadly, and I don’t think SG gives a very good one. It only attracts a specific niche of people, and that niche is typically seen as embarrassing by many (myself included).
I’m ready to get jumped for this (if that does happen), but hey, my honest experience was that I almost completely passed on this game before realizing it has many things I like that cumulatively outweigh the things I don’t like by a gigantic margin.
That’s one of the reasons why when I try to tell people about the game I tell them to check out the interviews and updates first rather than gameplay videos.
First impressions have a much bigger impact then i’d like… Thankfully I had a good first impression of this game because my first look showed all the “good” things about SG
Sadly I kinda agree. It will suffer from the same stigma that AH did, regardless of how good the gameplay is. And it wont even have the anime-moe fans that AH could attract. I think there is only a small group of people who appreciate the western toon style of SG. To everyone else, its something to be tolerated for the sake of gameplay.
Although I must say, after seeing the game in motion in HD, I came around a little bit. Sometimes overwhelming polish and shininess can make things attractive even if you dont like the art style.
Ah well. If we’re talking toon style, then we should all be dearly grateful that this isnt a Warner-Bros style furry game.
Instantly? No not in this age of FGs. Just look at the games that are being played now at the main stage they are all games that had history before the drought. If Killer Instinct 3 were to come out right now even if it was broken it would probably have more players than any new game after SF4 vanilla release.
Over Time? Yes as long as the game is polished, balanced, fun to play and leaves some kind of imprint in peoples memories.
But then again this what i said above only applies to North American players, everywhere else actually tries games out and evaluates them after bringing it to a higher level. /profoundsadness
I’m not so sure. I would assume, japanese racism being what it is, that most of them wouldnt give SG a chance either. Has -any- western FG ever made any sort of mark in japan? (or asia, for that matter.)
Get it on Steam asap, there is a massive market gap for a fighter on PC that isn’t several years behind the console release imho. When this game’s metacritic score comes in, provided it is in the mid 80s, and a steam sale comes around A TON of people will buy it for $5 or whatever then so long as the GGPO stands up you’ve got yourself a PC community. 4 million people on steam at the moment and a good chunk of us our compulsive buyers when it comes to the Steam sale. I’ll get it on Xbox and Steam given the chance.
When the West has MK, KI and Primal Rage (pretty sure one of those is UK but w/e) I don’t think it’s racism.
SG seems to have a definite interest in Japan and will definitely have an arcade presence if they can go through with getting an arcade release as they hope to.
And so what ? A fighting game does not have to be mainstream to be good, or perhaps you think KOF XIII, Guilty Gear, Blazblue and Virtua Fighter are all bad games just because they aren’t half as popular as MK, Tekken, Marvel or Street Fighter, do you ?
To be frank, I’ll be perfectly glad with SG’s status as a “niche” game as long as it keeps a fairly active, even if small online/tournament player base and manages to sell well enough to warrant a sequel.
But then again, isn’t this the whole point of indie games like Skullgirls ? To serve as a cheaper, but inevitably less popular alternative to mainstream games while at the same time bringing something new to the table in order to satisfy players who want to try out something different ? Just keep your expectations in check, dude.
Hey. Hey. West didn’t make even one competitive FG ever. Don’t blame Japan for this >_> I’m not bashing it’s the fact, right? First one was MK 2k11 and many players still thinking that NRS is doing it wrong.
I heard Japanese guys are pretty excited about SG. I’d be too if I was one them. After all they don’t know what good western FG is looks like. It’s logical to be curious IMO.
That’s not the point of the topic, the OP asked if it could become “BIG”. I only answered to that, so don’t put words in my mouth, especially when I’m currently involved with Kof XIII.
