I went pretty hard on MVCI release using the Hori Fight Commander and my thumb is jacked up.
Initially it was sore and hurt a bit but I kept playing, its been callused for a while now even though I played much less the past few weeks feels like its not getting any better.
When I do play the hard skin actually affects my ability to play due to less grip and a more slippery surface.
Not sure what your question is, because your post was essentially a factual statement.
But welcome to the club!
Many of us went through that phase back in the early 90s with SF2 on the SNES. For me it mostly came from learning to do Dragon Punches consistently back in the day.
It eventually goes away and you never have that problem afterwards, as far as my experience goes.
My recommendations/suggestions:
Put lotion on the calluses when you’re not playing; keep the finger healthy and hydrated;
Try centering your thumb on the d-pad and rotating for motions rather than sliding your thumb across the directions;
I think I started my gamers calluses back in the mid 80s with Super Mario Bros, By the time Street Fighter 2 came about I was done forging those calluses and started to temper them.
To this day the tips of my thumbs have thicker skin than the rest of my hands, the pads of my thumbs even resist soldering iron burns.
I feel like the the first version of the ps1 pad was the most brutal and gave me the worst calluses. Very hard direction buttons with no space in the center, you have to slide your thumb.
PS1 pads used to blow up my thumbs when playing Alpha 3. I remember nice bumps on my thumb after long sessions. Can’t imagine if I was a pad player now playing Marvel and Tekken on that shit or something. Hell no.
Luffy won EVO with that dpad so it must be good lol. But i always used a shirt over the dpad for smoother movement. The callusses you earn over time and will help longer play with dpad. Mine is in the middle of my thumb where it bends I never used the tip for fighting games. Goodluck and try out arcade sticks as well.
Haven’t had calluses since going hard on Kairi’s last Trial in SFexplusAlpha on the PS1 pad (Still the best pad I’ve ever used for Fighting games tbh)
You know what doesn’t destroy your thumb?
I think the only time I got a callus (blister?) was when WipEout HD first came out on PS3. And it wasn’t on my thumb, but on my ring finger. The Dual Shock 3 d-pad was fine; it was the screw hole that got me!
I guess it was worth it though… apparently I was second in the world to get the platinum…
