Why? Serious question. Single-player features are non-existent, online can be… problematic, as my experience shows, but what is genuinely, fundamentally wrong with this game? The system is pretty basic, but it doesn’t feel like anything is really missing, the game doesn’t suffer from any poorly-implemented gimmick mechanics, the roster is balanced (not perfectly, but there are no monsters like vanilla Sagat or the Calamity Trigger zoning trio), offline versus is as fun as it gets. Why so much hate for XII? Lack of Mai? She’s back in XIII, and nobody plays her.
hey I play mai I use to have kof12 but I sold it Iam waiting on 13 I use kyo, terry ,k ,or yuri, k ,an the ice girl
wrong. The game has so much things missing its not even funny, as it is its like a tame SF2 with clunky movement and hitboxes.
The game has alot of fall-backs; Note that this is coming from a fan of the KoF series since kof 96, and I bought this game day 1 at full-price, but it wasnt worth anymore than 5 bucks as its just a fail incomplete demo to XIII:
the zoom-in effect: while this is a nice touch to old AoF fans, it messes up Spacing really bad at times and at close range it makes everything look too close and…ugly, the sprites become so hideous that you cant see shit.
1 super bar: seriously, the fuck is this? this alone made the game feel like its not KoF anymore, no blowbacks, roll cancels, sDMs etc… in all previous Kofs you had so many options to what you can do with your meter, but with some its just for a DM thats useless for quite a bit of chars.
1 DM per character: aside from a few Characters like Ryo Robert and Ash everyone only got 1 DM, and some like Leona and Kensou got the shaft on this end as they chose some seriously shitty DMs for them that have little to no practical use, while Ash got 3 DMs (!) and sadly all of them blew -well the triple flash kick is alright but you dont get full damage when you combo to it from lows which is lame-.
Incomplete movesets: this is the one that pissed me off the most, 2 specials Clark? Ralf with no Charge punches or dive or…anything? Athena with no Psycho Sword? Iori going slashy slashy? 4 moves max per character?
aside from Robert Ryo everyone else is INCOMPLETE! hell even those 3 feel off.
No combos/half assed “features”: seriously where are all the combos? best combos in this are jump in normal> command normal xx special xx Super, the fuck is that? Thats some SF shit, kof is all about crazy combos and insane infinites and XII doesnt have any of that which its tame good for nothing engine.
there’s the critical counter nonsense which is totally random and unreliable, plus it works in a funny way and looks retarded. and dont get me started on the stupid clash thing where you can Punch a projectile and take no damage plus close in for free… and the oh so awesome guard parry or w/e its called thats dumb too, it wouldve been a good substitute for blowbacks if it took meter… but being able to use for free is dumb.
its not balanced- if you think this game is balanced then you’re not playing it with good players OR you’re using at least 1 or 2 of the complete 5 (kyo, iori, terry, joe, robert). Clark and Mature and the likes got the shaft bad, try closing in on a good Robert using those guys. For the record my Team was Ralf/Clark/Ash. the game is undeniably ass and the incomplete betas are only able to compete coz the engine doesnt really have anything to make the top tiers scary, its all simply boring fighting.
ass netcode: idk whats going on in your heads but this game does NOT have a netcode thats in any way playable.
like, no offense to any of you if you think the netcode is playable then you’re either not playing properly or playing shitty players.
I tried playing this game many many times and even on full bars the lag was so bad I’d miss simple combos and cant do any charge special at all. even Tekken 5DR and SC4 have a better netcode which is SAD.
idk, in the end of the day I might just be too bitter coz I felt ripped off for paying 60 bucks for a godamn incomplete DEMO. but the game IS incomplete and very tame and boring compared to…any fighting game really.

The game didn’t have but one infinite combo for you to abuse. You’re only good with the 5 “complete” characters you mentioned, Kyo, Terry, Joe, Robert and Iori. You didn’t know that Athena actually has her Psycho Sword move. Characters with only one super move or two specials (like Guile) is only okay in SF because you can’t make effective use of them.
Clark had 3 specials actually - f+LK+HK which you don’t count because it doesn’t do damage and you can’t use it properly.

Athena’s half assed infinite doesnt count coz its not really effective, and Joe’s infinite was a glitch that happened with the online patch and got removed quickly.

in SF its ok coz theyve been like that since their debut, no moves were cut out. but in KOF what character only has 2 specials in the normal games? Even ash the “guile” of kof has 3. its unexcusable in XII coz its clear they were unfinished.

Sorry for the late reply, didn’t have time to write a long post yesterday.
Movement is smoother and more responsive than in XI, not to mention the Neo Geo titles. That’s not even an opinion; I just checked both games. Never had any problems with weird hitboxes either. I’m not going to claim that I’m 100% sure there aren’t any, but I’m afraid I’ll have to request a YouTube video of messed up hitboxes as proof.
This I can agree with. The zoom ruins the gorgeous sprites and makes estimating where Ash’s air kiss bombs are going to end up trickier than it should be. No idea what SNK was thinking when they implemented this.
Multiple bars haven’t been implemented until '97. Even there, it was an option. Plus, we have a separate meter for Critical Counters in XII. Blowbacks are also in.
Teams Japan, Fatal Fury, AoF, Elisabeth, Kim, Elisabeth and Psycho Soldier are all fine. So are Ash, Iori and Leona. They don’t have all the moves they used to have in previous games, but they can still fight, even if their playstyles are different now because of the lack of old moves. The only characters that do feel incomplete are Ralf, Clark and Mature. Sucks, but hardly enough to warrant the angry cries of “WORST FIGHTING GAME EVAH!”.
Really? To me, KoF has always been about the overall pace and multiple jump types. Other than that, mechanics changed so much over the years (strikers in the NESTS games, tagging in 2003 and XI, Max Mode in 2002UM) that I’m not sure how anyone can be attached to some of them and still remain a fan of the series overall.
I have nothing to say here. Liking or disliking XII-specific mechanics is entirely a matter of personal taste.
Just because they have more moves doesn’t make them ungodly overpowered. Like you said yourself, combos are straightforward and everyone’s damage potential is roughly the same. I wouldn’t call it boring, though, the fun comes from Critical Counters and clashes you dislike so much, at least in my mind.
To sum up, your main gripe with XII is that it’s not like previous games. I can relate somewhat, but there are only so many times you can rebalance the same game before you have to make changes to the underlying system. SF III didn’t have Alpha Counters and different versions of characters, SF IV didn’t have parries. Nobody minded much, as they introduced different mechanics in their place. I’m actually kinda pissed at SNK that XIII completely discarded XII-specific mechanics and instead ended up being 2002UM in HD. Still looking forward to it more than any other fighting game.
I also don’t think that XII is perfection incarnate, the game obviously has problems. What I’m arguing is that the hate surrounding it is completely irrational and overblown. It won’t - and shouldn’t - be remembered as one of the series’ highest points, but as far as engine debuts go, it could have been a whole lot worse.
Also, there is no justice. Just found a guy with a yellow bar online, no lag whatsoever… and he’s a bloody booster who duct taped the X button.
