I play sfv very little. I’m at 3800lp. Now that the games been out for about 3 months, I think it’s a pretty solid game but I still like sf4 more. Seems like there was a lot more creativity in sf4 and there were many different ways to play whereas sfv seems very linear. 3 months is still considered a new game so dont hold me to my initial opinions.
Hey guys, we’re going to start running ranbats for SFV and GG during our meetups again this summer. The prizes this year will be fore entry+registration at all the upcoming local tourneys.

usually when people talk tech we stay on topic for about thirty seconds
SFV is not a tech kind of game. all my fancy Ken shit just confuses me and for the most part I’d be better off eyeballing my setups. It’s a good game but I’ve figured out I do not enjoy maining a shoto all that much, even a RTSD version like Ken, and have no affinity for the archetype but there aren’t any other characters I’m interested in playing since the grapplers either have character designs I’d feel embarrassed about using (laura, mika) suck really bad (zangief) or are hybrid charge characters who also suck (alex)
bring back Abel
I wouldn’t say I play heavily either, in a good week I play maybe 30 matches vs. good players then waste time in shitty 4 bar lobbies for another hour or two. wish I could play more so I lose less but just not at that point in my life anymore.
But I don’t really find Vega as fun as he used to be.
In 4 Vega was mobile and could punish hard from a variety of distances
In 5 Vega pokes you to death and can lame out and really turn it on with mixups when you take the claw off.
I just really wish he had cosmic heel in this game =( That move made 4 so fun. And scarlet terror… and a safe roll…
He’s unquestionably better by virtue of having actually good anti airs depending on your distance from the opponent. Like, without question, what he does in this game he does better than in 4. I feel like I can understand how to play him a lot more easily.
I miss the 4 frame cancellable c. mp and the boss st. HK too. And the wide variety of pokes… whereas in this i’m basically ONLY using st. mp to keep people out. C. mp is ass in this game. only good if you have the frame data on your side and perfect distance, but in neutral it sucks
And I find I can’t really do damage to people who just spam 3 frame jab. My st. hp, it’s pretty hard to hit that shit with it. All jabs are disjointed and reach so far =’( The st. hp is only good at punishing throw whiffs. And you can’t do that until you train people to not press buttons with moves that don’t really do that much damage. unless you have V trigger and full meter.
IDK, it’s good but I miss some of the things that made SF4 vega fun. SF5 Vega is cool but IDK i miss the creativity having more normals / moves offered in 4.
EDIT: Actually but to set the record straight, there are some things SF5 does unquestionably better.
Easy combos - Means you can spend more time in training mode working on setups, practicing your meaties, doing “how-to-counter” type stuff rather than just practicing combos for hours
No vortex stupid ass bullshit - Makes the game more legit and less wow I got knocked down once and DIED
No big ass normal chains - Feels more explosive rather than drawn out; makes it more dramatic
No more crouch teching - you have to actually BAIT the throw tech, not just punish the same shit with the same shit
Only thing I don’t like about SF5 is stand jab anti-airs. But I can deal with that. shouldn’t be jumping anyway. at least, it’s something you can NOT DO and avoid the huge punishments that are associated with it ie chun li st. lk anti air dash under xx whatever, compared to vortex where one mashed sweep can lead to 139482103984203 damage and stun that doesn’t even give you any openings
Overall, I just want more characters and a non-ugly ass interface in this game. SF4 felt fluid in the menus. This isn’t something I normally care about but the problems with SF5’s menus and etc are egregious.
i dunno man, i don’t find practicing meaties in training mode any more fulfilling. setups maybe, but i don’t find SF5 to be a setup heavy game. it’s mostly a meaty calculation game; as ken in the corner after throw, combos ending in tatsu, ending in heavy DP, ending in EX DP off a juggle, you’ll need to learn like timing for quick rise, back rise, and no rise. mid screen most characters don’t get a lot after stuff so it’s less extreme but in the corner i think you just have to memorize your setups and then run your mixup
stand jab anti-air is whatever i guess… it’s a little lame but they’re risking like 250 damage, 500 stun and corner carry for 30 damage and a meaty. shrug it does make the game feel less “weighty” though.
and yeah, your last point is the crux for me personally. i am so aggravated/insulted by the interface, menus, and surrounding (lack of) content of sf5 that i get frustrated every time i boot it up. i’m mad before i even play my first match, so it’s extra hard for me to find the fun parts of the gameplay
also yeah, because the characters are relatively simple, it becomes clear very early on if you like a character or not, because there’s not a lot of extra fun stuff to find under the first 30 minute exploration of them. so for SF5 to only have 18 characters (for now) is pretty tough because it’s not that unlikely that none of the characters will be fun for you. you can even see it in the top SF player ranks. people like xian, gamerbee, etc have gone through character crises after like 1 month with the game.
SFV is like the “party game” of FGs. You don’t have to invest much time or effort to be competitive with like minded people and have some good matches with friends. It’s good for what it is but I don’t see it maintaining the competitive momentum it has at the moment?
I find researching stuff for almost any other fighter to be more entertaining, but I still invest the most time into SFV because it’s “easy” and it’s what people are playing.
Everything about the game that isn’t the actual fighting is poo gas though. And even that is meh because of the aforementioned teeny tiny roster. A fighting game like SF shouldn’t have less than 25 characters these days. Wacky games like Blazblue, KI, Injustice etc could get away with less because of the off-the-wall designs.
Put SCVI and Injustice 2 in and around my mouth though! E3 can’t come soon enough…
MKXL I play online a lot, and my brother and I play it at least once a week for an evening since he lives up north. But I don’t spend time in training mode. Don’t think anyone plays in Calgary anymore so that motivation isn’t there. MKXL is also my game of choice to spectate. ESL always puts on a good show. Even as we speak! Sonicfox finally lost… Alien is pretty busted though so that sucks.
I still need to get into KI though. Came out at a very busy time. Did my 10 ranking matches with my week 1 Sabrewulf tactics and went 9/10 and then never played again. Soon… My only barrier is it’s hard to take interest in that combo system at the moment.
I agree with most things Jamie said about sfv. I love how it’s more neutral oriented over setplay/mechanic abuse. In Sf4 you could win solely of abusing in game mechanics l. Example would be Chun li having a +1 level 1 focus and probably 2 best back dash in game, while in sfv it seems more balanced and there aren’t a bunch of mechanics you can exploit. It doesn’t have as much depth as Sf4, but I feel at high level it 100% allows the better fighting game player to win.
I also can’t stand jab anti airs. For characters like necalli, Ryu, Alex it’s not a risk. Jab aa is pretty much a guarantee. Plus even if u trade, u still get you mixup/side swap or pressure. It’s Capcoms cop out to new players who can aa with srk/air to air/aa normals. Really dislike it.
Also jabs in general seem to strong, but that could actually just be because of the in game lag associated with ps4. Other than that the game is fun. I feel like it was released early. Not by a couple of months but by a whole year.
No real story, no money shop, 16 characters is a joke starting roster for a sf series nowadays. No challenge mode within the first month. I feel like it was supposed to be released next year, with the 6 “dlc” characters included in roster.
All in all 7/10
The pros of SFV are the reasons Soul Calibur has always been my favourite FG series mechanically. Emphasis on reads and neutral and frame data over execution and set ups… but with the added dimensions (A third dimension… if you will) of ring outs and wall splat combos, and avoidance > blocking, 'cus having your attack whiff is way worse than it being blocked. Promotes knowing the inns and outs of your opponent’s move set, which is something I also enjoy about SFV… but it just kinda makes me wish I was playing SC, 'cus SFV often feels like watered down SC.
But is a good game. Though if it wasn’t called SF it would have died faster than Persona or UNIEL. Luckily there’s tons of options out there if Capcom can’t fix SF. I don’t really want to reward failure with my money/time anymore.
edit: The most important “pro” of SFV though is the time it takes to find matches. It fits a special niche in my life where I want to play an FG but also need to get some work/cleaning done in between matches ;). Sucks that you get matched up against the same person over and over though. Guess that’s probably because no one is playing it online.
I feel something wrong with my head… I’m having so much dizziness and vertigo that it hurts and I sometimes have to get out of bed to vomit
It’s caused me no end of stress for the past several weeks since the doctors have been taking so long to find anything wrong with me and I feel like I’m really about to go insane from the anxiety
Their latest theory is that I have some sort of inner ear problem which I’m going to see a physiotherapist about tomorrow
no not really, i’m still involved with the game a lot but all my time and energy is devoted just to doing guide work or guide research. i’ve probably played 30 total matches in all of 2016. the game is as good as ever but my particular situation prevents me from really enjoying it that much.
that said, i’d enjoy playing people in calgary who want to give the game a shot
i respect gg as a game a lot but i think it’s pretty niche. the mechanics and character design are not for everyone, and you have to really enjoy anime-style games (air dashing, insane pressure, etc). that said, within the niche they are doing a good job with revelator, especially the whole early access demo stuff
