Calgary Thread 2016

@MisguidedAngel you gonna be at Hexter’s tonight. I kinda wanna try R.mika out and I know you play her.

I’m going to try for 7 or so. Crunch time of the year though

A big help is learning her set ups into Lady Mika off of quick recovery knockdowns I’ve found. There’s probably better but I haven’t looked up any tech for the game… Like after a lot of knockdowns she can dash forward, whiff standing jab, and then Lady Mika and it’ll crush counter anything they do that isn’t invincible (and is +3 if they block wuuu) and off knockdowns that aren’t so lengthy you can dash forward and hit them with a 5 framer (s.MP, command grab etc)

She’s very difficult to stand up against… But she’ll probably be my alt soon (HUUULKSTTER)

sfv is insane, every other game is kinda the same

What’s the Calgary scene like these days? Is there still a Thursday fight night at tubby dog for street fighter v or anything like that?

i’m messing around with R Mika as my alt. it’s very satisfying getting the combos you want, but feelsbadman.jpeg when you drop them lol

There’s a few things going on every week:

Wednesdays at Hexters in Bowness
Thursdays at the UofC
Sundays at Dickens down town.

I’m also getting decent turnout on Mondays(which it looks like I’ll be able to continue through April.

Something that’s been on my mind is age as a limit in competitive gaming. I feel it’s hard to find high level(professional) gamers in the late 20’s and even the early 30s. Why do you guys think that is when in physical sports you have usually an average age range around those ages. I guess even current grandmasters in chess are the youngest they’ve ever been but the average through conception to now is also 28? Weird. Any thoughts?

Think time and responsibilities. Most 20 to 30 years olds have a fulltime job. Then you have girlfriends or wifes. The you have children also another time factor. Also at a younger age I found I was willing to game for longer periods of time. Espeically if it was he same game over and over.

I can’t get into SF5 for the life of me. Guess it’s time to call it quits!

I understand your point but to say athletes don’t have the same issues wouldn’t be accurate. Pepeday and sakonoko(not to sure for sakonoko on the job front) both have families. Pepeday holds a position working for his city (which being japan demands quite a bit). But what about players like knuckledu in sf or faker in league? Faker is probably a good case to watch as time goes on. Considered the best mid player for the past few years (holds 2 world’s and is aiming for a third) and holds a well established and secured career. Now suppose league lasts another 10 years (fakers only 19 and the oldest korean lcs player is trace at 28) will faker still have a career? He has the money to support himself for quite a while. If he can keep his skills up and compete will he?

Mayb it’s also our generation. Im 33 and really E sports kinda happened here in NA the last 5 or 8 years?

So most of people were probably already finishing school and starting careers or already have kids. Well kid who were 10 or 16 at the time it was taking off had the time and non financial commitment to take a stab at it and make it before they were into adult life?

boils down to commitment, or lack there of.
you can do anything your put your mind to – regardless of age, gender or creed.

granted, there are factors which can hinder commitment, such as having a job, a family, a kid, etc. etc.

it’s all about finding that magical balance!

E-sports is a funny, but very real thing. In the coming years there will be a HUGE influx of people getting into it, compared to past years. Shit man, even my own parents mentioned college kids getting scholarships from playing video games like you would playing basketball or football.

This shouldn’t deter people who are “older” from participating or being a part of it. those people just need to find that commitment inside.

this post is brought to you by being fucking old and mentioning two very (very) bad band names.

I hope Balrog is soon.

Only because I want to hear that sweet sweet new theme song.

Edit: With “real” sports you also have people groomed from a super young age with teams and coaches, support from their parents, and then you get college paid for if you’re awesome. That’s only just starting to happen with e-sports.

And even then your parents probably tell you what you’re doing sucks until you’re Sonicfox and you bring home 300k before you’re 18.

Yep. Like I said in the future I could see older Esport players now that its more viable and excepted. Also seems like players get droped alot easier the they would do in sports. I dont know how most esport sponsorships work but im guessing playesr get dropped alot easier then athletes who arent preforming.

Dark Souls/Bloodborne are pretty easy-ish games but i keep getting raped in Salt and Sanctuary wtf :frowning:

Man i suck at 2D platformer style games lol

I don’t think i’m all that hype for this movie, i’m not gonna lie

Me ether. Honestly getting burned out on super hero movies. Deadpool was good cause it was diffrent. Super hero movies are like saw movies and getting over saturated.

The Disney Marvel movies have been taking a good approach with them by making them genre films that happen to have super-heores in them, or at least 1/2 of phase 2 did a good job of mixing it up (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-man, and Winter Soldier). Though Thor 2, Iron-man 3, and Avengers 2 were pretty forgettable.

I am hopeful for Civil War and the final X-men film. Both films should have some actual consequences and stakes instead of just padding the time until the finale.

its definitely that it’s just more accepted now

i would say that at age 27 i’m about the youngest age you will find being completely accepting of esports. sure there might be outliers, but people right around my age are starting to think that this is cool and acceptable. my kids will grow up watching tournies on twitch because that’s what i’ll watch on a sunday afternoon. a friend of mine has a 4 year old son and he watches dota with him and he didnt know that his kid was actually watching but he’ll mention stuff about tournaments weeks later and shit

think about what videogames were like when our parents were our age - they were shit. solid colored blobs moving uniformly around not really doing anything - they never got that picture out of their heads. we know better, and our kids will know better, and their kids and so on. I have 0 doubt in my mind that some day esports will be like a tier 2 or tier 1 spectator sport - i’m talking you can go to the dome and watch the calgary beavers play a game of dota against the edmonton skidmarks on a tuesday night type of big. There’s too much interest and too much potential interest for it not to grow that way. it will just take time. people used to think football was a silly kids game that nobody should waste their time on
