Derryks claim to fame, “my house was on TV once.”
yeh i’m pretty sure I saw it too, haha. probably filmed it whilst still living there too, they blocked off roads a few times from what I remember.
hey there is one thing I thought about that may totally change my hype for MKX - is it going to be block button based or will it be like injustice? (please be like injustice lol)
Yeah, dude you can use that to pick up chicks.
Bilbo was in my house.
So the major complaint was that when Scorpion was introduced to Injustice as DLC he broke the game because his neutral game was pretty ridiculous due to his teleports. MK had the block button so that you can block those teleports without manually correcting your direction but with a traditional blocking system in Injustice, Scorpion’s MK-esque game mechanics went against the established neutral game. Considering all the BS we have to block in anime fighters was Scorpion’s teleport that big of an issue?
Block button. It’s been a block button for over 20 years. How are people still surprised by this.
Here’s my advice though: go delete patches off an Xbox hard drive for Injustice, and then play against a pre-patch Scorpion. Then come back here and let me know how hype you’d be for MK with back-to-block ;).
There is no anime fighter with anything like MK teleports that I’ve ever played. (they are instant, tracking, unpunishable unless blocked, attack at the same moment of the teleport and lead to 50%+ damage which leads to vortexes)
Sure MK could have back to block if you want the scene to be way less significant in size than it is. (there’s reasons Marvel and anime fighters have much smaller casual fanbases, and part of that is because of the bullshit you have to block)
MK also has more unreactable overheads and lows that lead to full combos than other games (much closer to a 3D fighter in that sense).
Getting rid of the block button to make a miniscule number of competitive players happy that don’t play MK anyway (and who probably still wouldn’t buy it), while simultaneously upsetting a much greater number of the ginormous fan base seems all kinds of dumb.
edit: also, FG players much better than anyone in this thread (Like Rico, CDjr) complained about how impossible to play against Scorpion was, even comparing him to ST Akuma…so I’m guessing it was a big issue. From personal experience, when Scorpion came out, I COULD beat him, but fighting him was absolutely the least fun experience I could imagine in a fighting game. It made me stop playing the game online for that month because it was only Scorpions everywhere (And I put up with pre-patch Superman and Black Adam and still enjoyed that a ton). Fighting games have to be fun as well as competitive.
dammit. god dammit.
guess i’ll just have to stop playing street fighter gasp until street fighter v
On pad you don’t really even notice since it’s just the trigger button (and it’s nice to be able to keep moving backwards and make stuff whiff which you can’t do in other games, since there’s no auto-block). Block buttons on stick blow though.
Oh, and the stuff you have to put up with in anime fighters is much harder to pull off than anything an MK character with a teleport would have to do for a similar or even worse effect ;).
anyone wanna hots tonight
I’m down for hots. Gotta get me a lich king.
Mememe! I’m having withdrawals from my sexy zombie-bug king.

More reasons for block button: Pressure strings are WAY safer in MK, there are a lot less reversals than other games (none without meter pretty much), you take obscene amounts of chip damage from said safe strings (especially in MKX by the looks of it), a lot less cover-all anti airs, and blocked jump ins lead to said obscene chip damage even when you do guess right in the high/low game. No auto-correct so jump arcs are used to screw with anti-airs (which is why Kung Lao’s is so powerful since it covers both sides).
For better and worse, MK is not other fighting games. You don’t want to be worrying about which side to block the instant teleport that they could be doing at any moment (like cancelling into them from safe high/low mixups), or the jump ins that are already a lot better than most other fighting games. You’d have to fundamentally change what MK is, and they’ve already done a lot more evolving than other franchises. If you don’t already think jump-ins and teleports are more than scary enough, you don’t know enough about the engine.
I actually don’t have an issue with a block button in MK nor was I advocating that it should be removed in MKX though it definitely sounded that way. The series has it’s own developed meta for it which you mentioned so just have to learn and adapt to it. IIRC, you can cancel dash momentum with the block button in MK9, right? I thought I was doing that a lot to approach certain characters in MK9 so if that’s the case it’s pretty similar to cancelling runs with barrier/faultless defense in BB/GG. I was generally asking if blocking Scorpion’s teleport in Injustice was as bad as it sounded in comparison to what you have to block in anime fighters. I definitely remember the complaints that the NRS community had with pre-patch Scorpion but NRS patched him pretty quickly before more counter strats could be developed.
That cake impresses you?
My mom’s been a cake decorator for 20 years… that cake is scrub shit to her. lol
One year she made a cake that looked exactly like the original Xbox.
Yes, sir. The block button could be used just like barrier in anime games. I’m not sure if that’s back in MKX or not (there’s both run and dash now… One of them might be cancellable by block and one of them might not be?)
I still remember MK 2 where that was the only way to take small steps because the developers thought it was a good idea that tapping the stick for a fraction of a second should make your character advance by a full stride.
Kinda made footsies much more clumbsy than in sf.
