Calgary Thread 2015

this is a civil discussion? i’m just making random anecdotes, i’m not complaining about anything

i have 0 experience with mobas and assimilate all my opinions on them from either my brother or zak, so i can’t actually complain about anything, i’m just asking questions pal

ricky you should definitely seek some help

well, not that i know from personal experience, but i hear dota is an execution game as well as a game of the mind, so they aren’t just “clicking on bars for 25 minutes” as much as they are grinding out an advantage using their execution

now, being forced to commit to 25 minutes of busy work with perfect consistency may not be the most fun in the world to some people, but that’s why i’m asking what comparable “skill-based” thing is there in hots

those that don’t like the game online seem to say that it matters less who is controlling the character than any other moba… the skill is solved in the meta and people just do it (a little like hearthstone). the interesting competitive games, to me, are the ones with known skills that are “good to have”, but you probably don’t have them unless you play a lot (like anti-airing in SF). is this a fair complaint?

i am, and these hots bros are giving it to me

This guy kind of plays TLV like you mentioned zak.

Hes basically useless in team fights, but hes always soaking, getting mercs, and sieging in at least 2 lanes.

man MOBAs are boring

Destiny should add a MOBA-ish multiplayer mode. like a competitive horde mode. that’d be super badass

this is the only thing I can really see as being a con for a simplified moba game

as long as they make each talent spec viable it will probably work out better. right now theres usually a clear “optimal” tree to take and you’re gimping yourself if you don’t take it

for example, I cannot possibly see why you would take the roots specs for malfurion. if you want healing(which is all you really want to take with him anyways) you spec healing, if you want damage you take moonfire

but like…if you’re taking a moonfire malfurion into the game…why not just pick an actual dps character instead of gimping your team

it is like in wow for anyone that did raiding seriously. you’d need to fill a class quota basically(40 man party, can’t only take 1 druid) and you’d always have that one(or 8, depending on your guild lol) who would be some retarded off-spec that didn’t really do anything well but made them feel good, and they’re like a wasted roster slot

Wonder if this HOTS thing will have anything from Rock N’ Roll Racing.

If they can manage putting TLV into the game, i don’t see why they couldn’t at the very least add some kind of level or mounts with that theme lol

no…they’re clicking on bars for 25 minutes so they can solo the enemy team. I can’t stress the time enough - in a 40 minute game, you spend probably half of that doing moba stuff. the rest of the time you’re sitting in a lane carefully clicking on healthbars.

trust me when I say that it’s profound. I was one of those people who didn’t play league at first because you couldn’t deny(kill your own creeps) I thought this was dumb as hell and “ruined” the game. as time went on it wasn’t really a big deal. hots goes another step and basically removes the tedious “pre-requisite 20+ minutes of clicking on npcs until we are at an xp/gold level where we can start playing the game” phase and puts you right into it. the result is

a) no tedius laning phase
b) less emphasis on “laning” and more harassment of other heroes(more fun) or objectives(more fun). this is not subjective either
c) shorter games overall (HUGE plus on hots’s side)

decision making is very important now. the allocation of resources(heroes/players) between laning for xp vs creep camps vs team fighting vs objectives is as important as the mechanical abilities. though I will say(someone can probably shut me down here) that positioning of your characters seems really important in hots. be it bad pathing or what but I find myself getting body blocked CONSTANTLY wheras it’s not a problem in dota or league

this is a valid complaint. blizzard needs to make the different talent trees(that make different playstyles for the same character) all viable, or at least not so obviously slanted in a certain direction. see my above post for more on that

Looks like Nintendo is limiting the stages that are select-able in Smash4 at Evo. The reason being is there’s some music licensing issues. Apparently, two of the best counter pick stages for Diddy Kong are not select-able because of this. Sounds like the more Nintendo gets involved with the Smash community the more they fuck it up. lol

… how is that even possibly a thing

what music is causing licensing issues? i can’t even fathom it

where are you seeing this news? i can’t find it anywhere

Not gonna lie, HotS is making me very intested in trying DOTA again. The only thing holding me back is the item system. (But I used to play Warhammer where you memorize hundreds and hundreds of items… so I could probably figure it out… or Magic where you memorize thousands of cards…).

Edit: In MKX news, pre-ordering the game with the season pass is $99 (Comes with 15 skins and 4 characters, classic and guest), which is equal to every other game on PSN right now with the same kind of deal… but it’s still a lot of money. But I already bought it because I need dat Goro (And fingers crossed for Spawn)

From a gameplay standpoint it’s more like 12 new characters… so not a bad deal, I guess.

if there is anybody living in the south who goes to that vape place i wouldnt mind a ride if possible. can pay in either skullgirls lessons, or, begrudgingly, beer.

I will. I live like 2 minutes from you.

HOTS doesnt make me have any more interest in other mobas than i did before, i won’t play those lol

cheers andrew. ill have to get your number just in case.

I saw some of the discussion on my twitter feed but didn’t see anything to confirm this on other forums. Smashboards seems to have it documented the most so far.

^^

that really sucks about smash. but… could you not just turn off the music and have all stages? they already turn off items etc so i dont think it would be a big deal.

I’m watching Law & Order SVU and it’s about gamergate.

This is AWFUL. This is after-school special cartoon tiers of writing. It’s almost like a meta-troll.
