well, i mean, i don’t think nintendo believes that somehow project M is going to cannibalize smash 4 sales because it’s more fun to watch for some % of people. it’s a subset of a subset of a subset of their fanbase that’s playing this weird fan made thing. it costs basically 5 minutes of an intern’s time to shut it down, so it’s not like there is some protracted legal battle that they’re fighting behind the scenes here.
nintendo seems to have a pretty schizophrenic relationship with their dedicated smash fanbase; first they try to kill melee at evo, then they support apex with equipment and money. i think it mostly seems like there’s some advocacy voice in the marketing team that argues supporting smash 4 for X months after release with Y dollars will yield Z return on their investment, and nothing past that.
at the end of the day i feel bad for the PM dudes, but they knew what they were getting into. they didn’t make smash into a totally new thing (like DOTA or counterstrike or whatever has in the past) - they literally just took one game (brawl) and tried to make it more like the one that came before it (melee), all while using a whole lot of very protected copyright material instead of coming up with their own. nintendo has no reason to take them on internally and nurture that project unless they expect it will give them a better return than spending that same time and money on the next zelda or mario or whatever. smash seems to be doing fine sales wise, so where’s the impetus?
i guess a lot of smash fans are upset that there’s no alternative so sakurai has them in a chokehold - i mean, it’s not like PS all stars is going to take it’s place - but 90% of the allure of the franchise is the characters. so unless they’re willing to give a similar-but-without-mario game a chance, smash fans are kind of fucked.

the last sentence in your other post is the crux. sakurai has the series by the balls (nintendo in general) and that just means everyone is fucked. people will just play melee from now until forever with its 6 viable characters because there won’t be anything else, and those of us who are expecting a bit more out of the game (and got it in PM) just have to move on and find something new.

What exactly stops the community from running their own project M events even if Nintendo puts a C&D on the game? Nintendo doesn’t have a say on every FG tournament so anyone could add it but they probably wouldn’t stream it. Not streaming the game is not the end for the community since they can still record and post to youtube or other alternatives. Melee survived without media exposure so I’m sure the community could do the same for Project M if they truly support the game.
idk why you have to move on, you have PM right now and you can play it anytime right? would you go to any PM events if they came up? do you just want there to be a stream presence for the game?

If you’re going to do pixel graphics at least try stylize it based on what artists used to do on the SNES. Keep in mind the 16 bit color limitations and ditch the black outlines. Characters could have more than just two shades of colors back then you know.
Melee survived the non-youtube era because of the actions of a scant few dedicated players. These days competitive fighting games are abundant and we’re overwhelmed with media from twitch and youtube, thus it’s significantly harder to maintain interest in just a single game. Also, Melee had a massive fan base, Project M is already a super niche game that requires a ton of effort just to INSTALL it. This guarantees that its fanbase is already microscopic, and without sufficient media to maintain interest in it, it’s as good as dead.
I’m legitimately bummed out that Monty Oum is dead. But I can’t tell if it’s because I’m human or if it’s because I’m a selfish asshole. Probably both.
I want there to be a stream presence, youtube highlights, and excitement over the game. that’s how the game grows, how you get to see exciting grudge money matches, and hype top 8s with character variety
yeah, i can play the game on my own time, and that’s cool i guess (they can’t come to my house and literally delete the game on me), but if the community is constantly walking on eggshells whenever the game is brought up at events, then the game will stagnate and fade from memory. people will go back to playing melee (which is still hype to watch in doses, but the smaller character diversity wears thin quickly), or new players will put their stock in smash 4 instead (which to me is slow and frustrating to watch)
the end result is a lack of emotional energy in smash, which translates to less desire to play it at home
