Sucks Stamkos is out, but replacement has to be Giroux or Lucic, we need size not speed, that counts out St.Louis
couldn’t disagree more, not to mention giroux isn’t exactly a big guy (so not sure how he fits your criteria), and lucic can’t skate on the big ice
st louis is probably the best choice
On a bigger european ice with Olympic rulesets, speed is a far more important factor then size.
Even with St Louis on the team, Canda’s team would still be the largest size-wise out of the 4 medal contenders (USA, Russia, Sweden, Canada). They have more 6 ft+ and 200 pound+ team members on the roster then any other team.
St.louis had his shot in 06 failed, produced 2 goals 1 assist, and did absolutely nothing for Team Canada. As well if St.Louis didnt get picked with original squad then it show Yzerman has 0 biased moves and is going to make the best move for the Team. Giroux is carrying the Flyers on his shoulders this season, produces plays and his production is amazing, his role would be altered from Stamkos obviously, Giroux would be providing protection and depth where as the natural goal scorers Perry, Sharp, Crosby… so on can have more of an impact.
I am like 85% sure Giroux is getting this spot and is well deserved. Close second is St.Louis and 3 by supreme luck James Neal.
Yes ice is bigger but that wont effect Canadian style this year, Pretty sure after 06 in Italy they learned a thing or 2
The best move for the team is picking the reigning Art Ross winner and the hottest player in the NHL in the last 15 games (doing it without Stamkos to pad stats, too)
… yeah, they learned to load the team up with speed instead of size, which is why Lucic is a crazy choice (if you’re gonna do that, put Joe Thornton on the team, at least he’s a gifted offensive player and has won two gold medals).
Giroux is a solid player (and PPG this year) but St Louis deserves the spot no doubt
The biggest factor that critics noted in Canada’s failure to medal in 06 was the lack of speed.
I could see Giroux on the team… but definitely not Lucic.
