Calgary Thread 2014

good lol. i can’t wait to make yall rage when my stop your shit team is ready lol.

am i the only one here who thinks the naming system for guilty gear titles is bat shit crazy?
i mean, i get it… it’s japanese and all. but seriously? the acronyms are like something from a comic book lol

Check out Blazblue acronyms.

BB:CT, BB:CS, BB:CSEX, BB:CP

They were screwed for names when they made GGXX which they called it GGX2.

eh I’m over it now. turned around on it completely, I think it is actually pretty admirable if you can make an accessible fighting game. the more bullshit you throw up in the way of executional barriers just prevents people from getting to the core of FGs which is mindgames and footsies.

neither SF or Marvel are especially great at that what with SF throwing 1 frame links into the same game as easy reversals and FADCs into big damage, and Marvel being chock full of ToD combos that make learning the game difficult because you keep dying in one touch and don’t get to practice neutral as much as your combos, on top of it’s serious balance problems.

P4A was actually pretty awesome and easy to pick up. But the Guilty Gear games are just way, way, too much. too many sub-systems, FRCs are retarded, and your optimal combos all being situation specific, height specific, AND character specific are really stupid. In Marvel, aside from a couple outliers (sentinel, tron and Nemesis if you are playing magneto) your combos are pretty much all the same and I can’t think of any characters that have to do an entirely different combo start to finish depending on the starter except maybe some of the garbage tier guys.

like say, whether I anti-air with Magneto or get a clean hit, after my first launch the combo is going to be the same, and it always ends the same. you “feel” how much hitstun you have and then off you go. in GG, since everyone is not only a different size but falls at different speeds, and the rate they fall changes depending how long the combo is, and the hitstun changes on how many hits you do, and the damage is different depending which move you started with, and some combos you can mash out of and other’s you can’t, ugh fucking christ that is ridiculous

the style, the flow, the whatever is great. GGAC is my favorite game to watch. but to play? fuck no

the game doesn’t need to be as hard as it is, to look the way it does in motion. Marvel is insane and it is way easier to play in comparison. there is a happy middle ground somewhere

More like GG less like Marvel is better imo. I want to not be able to always land my best combo.

quick eRyu primer I wrote for some edmonton dudes: https://www.facebook.com/groups/edmontonfgc/permalink/664039560300815/

actually i dunno if you can read this if you’re not a member of the facebook group. if anyone can’t view it and wants to read it just lemme know. it’s basically a combo primer, tells you all the technical stuff you need to know about his facesmashing

I’d like to point out some things…

It really depends on the FRC, some are very lenient and a lot of them are around the same timing so when you learn one you can do another quite easily, but I will say that they if could make learning FRC timing even easier, that would be great.

Some characters don’t even need FRCs though, like Faust and probably Testament.

In Xrd, however, the replacement for FRC are the new RC timings, and I’m sure those will be quite lenient and easy to pick up.

This really depends on what character you’re playing. You can choose how much lab time you want with your character choice. For example, Millia will give you headaches forever with having to learn character specifics for almost each character, Testament only has to remember who’s on the heavier side and who’s on the light side, and for Dizzy, all her combos are pretty much the same.

There will be some situation specific stuff though, since there isn’t a universal launcher, most characters will have a different ground combo than their ground-to-air combo and even some combos that only come out if you land a specific setup, but most BnBs in Guilty Gear are actually fairly easy. (<- opinion.) Like Marvel, some combos can be really hard and some combos can be really easy.

I don’t really see the combos becoming any less or more situation specific, that’s just how fighting games are when you don’t have universal launchers or moves that set a certain height for you. Although Testament’s nets almost do that ;).

There are some other things that I’ll list that are going to be simplified going into Xrd though.

Impossible dust: Most characters right now don’t even use dust that much, but I think the new side follow-up to dust (think p4a) is going to be replacing this one. To put it simply, impossible dust was a weird glitch you could use to put yourself on the ground and put the other guy into a DHC glitch looking spin so you could do a ground combo instead of the air strings you normally get from dust.

Slashback: This one was added to AC as a sort of parry-like thing. You needed 2f timing to pull it off and it would get you out of all sorts of things and people would probably call you godlike if you used it to win a match. This is getting removed and a new mechanic called blitz shield is its ‘replacement’. The blitz shield looks like it’s going to be a universal counter-type move you get for 25%. We don’t really have much other information about it, since its probably going to be revised a lot while they try to balance it.

The Roster!: They haven’t added all of the characters back to Xrd yet, so you won’t have to worry about as many match-ups yet! I know Baiken, Testament and A.B.A are going to cause a lot of headaches when they come out, but you don’t have to worry about those guys yet. The characters out right now don’t change match-ups as dramatically as these characters, (Except maybe Axl) so it’s a good time to jump in.

dem GG lurkers doe

I really really really want to learn gg. As long as they keep I-no in there. I likes her

I-no is a babe, this is true. Personally I really like Dizzy and Faust, so that’s who I’m gonna mess with in Xrd.

We gonna have a problem, m8?

Oi, ew’ fukn wanna tumble dere’ chav?

I-No? More like, Hell-no. It’s all about May, the cutie pettanko pirate.

Haha just kidding I don’t really care for most of the girls in that game.

Gotta love Bridget because she’s actually a dude and that’s hella charming + cute.

Hey guys, what is the schedule going to be for the tourney on the 15th? I need to know so I can plan travel arrangements.

Watch for an official announcement (That will have concrete times) but it will be Underdogs around 1pm and then Injustice probably starting around 3-4. Marvel if somehow more than 6 people want to enter ( Did someone say Edmonton vs Calgary?) and then SF.

Instead of holding a main tournament in SF which tends to end with the usual suspects in top 3, we will be doing a 3v3 team tournament.

Everyone enters - Greg, Troy and I will pick captains and then we will be pulling names from hats to decide who goes where. This will probably start some time between 6-8pm and will be moderately hype.

misread :stuck_out_tongue:

if you guys aren’t playing tagpro, you’re doing it wrong

Anyone got an extra ae disc laying about? Also thinking of picking up Balrog… Or eRyu. Worth it?

woah i entirely misread that post…

i get it. captains then selections… fuck! i’m gonna be like the fat kid in gym class :frowning:
