i have no idea what is going on with this game, it all just looks like mashing
here’s what you need to know:
- combo breakers are a risk, they’re hard to react to even for good players, and are heavily in favor of the offensive player, so if you see a clutch combo breaker it’s really good
- all DP-like moves have startup before the freeze, but are 0 frames after the freeze so they can’t be blocked unless you were already holding backwards before the freeze, that’s why sabrewulf’s dash nonsense -> shadow DP is so hard to block
- most combos involve you canceling a normal into a special into a normal into a special until you decide to do a heavy special which ends your combo and cashes out all the gray damage. all the normals and specials are combo breakable if you guess right, but a wrong guess is a 3-second lockout so you can’t combo break and the other guy can go nuts with his hardest hitting stuff without fear

In KI you worry less about actually landing a combo and more about what you do when you land one or get hit by one.

so with KI can you just kind of make stuff up on the fly pretty easily? if you need to mix up your combos a lot it doesnt seem like it would be realistic to have like a bazillion BnBs. or can you interchange the normals/strength of special you use?

you mix your normals up between light, medium, heavy, and your specials up between light, medium, heavy, yes
this way you’re really hard to break, but good players can sometimes do it on reaction. the window is really tight.
additionally, there are other benefits/disadvantages to using each version… lights build your KV meter way faster. when your KV meter hits 100%, the opponent gets blown out without you being able to cash out all the gray damage
so lights are really hard to break but make your combos necessarily shorter, heavies do a lot of damage and add little to the KV but are much easier to break on reaction
Dora was gaining so much momentum from the crowd and the energy between the crowd and Dora was really exciting. I was hoping for Dora to make grand finals because he’s such an entertaining player but I think we got the best possible grand finals with Galileo and Dogura. The sheer amount of emotion between the players during and after grand finals was a defining moment for this years Evo, in my opinion. It was going to be a heart breaker for either player so you have to feel for them. Galileo was so elated when he won grand finals and you could see the passion on his face. On the flip side, Dogura was absolutely crushed after his loss and you can tell he was trying to hold back the tears but he couldn’t during the medal ceremony. Dogura’s girlfriend was getting so excited in the crowd when Dogura was landing hits. She was so devastated when he lost though, so much so that she broke down into tears in his arms after wards.
