Learning a new character is usually a good way to keep a game from getting stale, but most people just move on to a new game when they’re tired of an old game. Not really sure what anyone could do to revive it? Like… a 2013 balance patch for SF4 probably wouldn’t do much IMO, since the gameplay would be the same. SFxT is kind of like “the next version of SF4” in many ways, which was probably one way they looked to freshen up the SF4 formula… you get to press more buttons during combos anyway, which is always fun.
Team tournaments are awesome, especially Japan vs America stuff, but I just think good Japanese teams come over to NA so infrequently that you can’t really do much there. I don’t personally care much about something like EC vs WC in SF4.
Someone had a good point in the comment thread, where they said Marvel is more exciting in the US because each major tournament’s top 8 could conceivably be an Evo top 8, because so many of the game’s top players live in America. But a SF4 major’s top 8 might only have 3 or 4 people who could conceivably get top 8 at Evo, if that, so we just don’t get to see all the high-stakes matches between the best players often. But I’d personally watch a SF4 top 8 consisting of Daigo, Infiltration, Tokido, Kazunoko, Justin, Dieminion, Gamerbee, and Latif (with best 3 out of 5 games) and be just as entertained as any Marvel event. Something like this happens once a year though, instead of 10 times per year like it would for Marvel.
I think watching a SF4 top 8 tournament is stale in comparison to Marvel because SF has been distilled down to a very safe style of play that wins games. Not to mention it’s always the same group of people at the top, playing the same style every game. We never really see anything new. I think that’s why Poongko is so popular, he play with a style that shouldnt work.
At least with Marvel, even if you do see the same people at the top chances are you see something new from them.
the highways are fine. picturesque, even. mucho thanks again to Falken and the 4D crew hookin up four walls and a roof, and some fine-ass gaming. wish i didnt have to miss the tournament this weekend!
Falken I want a runback in Vampire those floating pinwheels are hella gay
and Amin, good luck in Lebanon man! Take care of business! Hope to see you back while its still 2013
just talked to a local group of speedrunners and theyre going to do some MegaMans and Zelda Ocarina of Time. he said he did Ocarina of Time in 10 hours so thats a pretty long time slot.
As an FYI, 10 hours is insanely long for OoT. If you allow game-breaking glitches, you can do it in like 1:30 (but this might not be entertaining for the casual viewer if they don’t know what’s going on), and even a full run of all the temples should be doable in under 6 hours.
OoT is one of the games that’s been thoroughly broken by the speedrunning community, so there are lots of resources available for people looking to run this game. It’s really long though, so it can quickly lose people’s interest if they aren’t hardcore Zelda fans. Lots of unskippable cutscenes.
Most Megaman games should be doable in the 25-45 minute mark (MM1, 2, 3, 9, 10). Maybe a bit longer for MMX games.
ohhh ok then maybe we’ll skip on the 10 hour OoT if thats not even worthy. also keep in mind, nobody will be of world class caliber speed running. lemme know if you have any other ideas ricky since you prob know lots about this stuff.
ohhhhh i know what we can do…
Zakk!! Mike C!!! i challenge both of you to a Binding of Isaac speedrun!!! this should be doable in about 30-45 mins.
edit: FYI Ricky i disagree, the OOT Speed run they do for this charity thing is insanely cool. I watched the whole thing last year, so many neat tricks. Never a dull moment really.
Yeah but you’re a Zelda fan, so it really just depends on Peter’s audience. Some people can’t watch a 5 hour run like that, especially if it’s not for a game they really care about. The SDA marathon stuff works well because they get like 30k people and there’s always a good chunk of them who’ll like any given run they do.
Also Pete, yeah not trying to say that only world-class speedrunners should participate. Just that, even for average speedrunners, 10 hours for OoT is way too long. If you’re going to run that game and keep people’s interest, they would need to get it lower.
Your idea of a Binding of Isaac race against Zakk/Mike C sounds really interesting. Speedrun races are often the most entertaining form, because there’s lots to think about/focus on across the multiple screens.
Have you heard of speedracing Bingo? Basically you get a 5x5 bingo board and the first person to complete any row, column, or diagonal wins. It’s a really creative way to breathe life into a game because you’ll get speedrunners trying to complete different objectives that are usually not needed for a normal run. This requires extra setup and experienced runners though, so it might not be where you want to start. Still, something to think about. Here’s an example of a Ocarina of Time bingo card: http://speedrunslive.com/tools/oot-bingo/?seed=340225 This would get generated at random at the start of a race, and the players will have to figure out which row/col/diagonal is the fastest on the fly. You’ll often get people attempting different row/cols so it’s kind of an asymmetric speed run with different ending conditions. Really interesting to watch.
I’d do a race against you or Mike C if you wanted, I haven’t been playing that game or any game very much recently, but I’d give it a shot. I actually used to speed run SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic). I don’t know how well I would be able to do it now, I didn’t have a very competitive time in that game, but it’s a pretty easy game to speed run.
