That’s awesome Troy. I’m so happy for you guys!!!
My mom just fed me two shots of Jack. Great parents hahaha
Happy New Year guys!!!
Happy new years everyone and congrats Troy!
Man I’m so out of the loop; what happened with HQ, what’s this talk about dickens, who’s playing KoF?
Happy new years everyone.
Congrats troy!
About HQ: I think the business is being sold so HQ wont be around much longer. Instead we’re running ranbats and whatnot at dickens pub (where the canada cup afterparty was) on sundays now.
I’m playing KOF.
I’m probably sticking with the “McDonalds game” (SF4). I’m not cool enough to play KoF.
Also, to the other board game nerds, I got Pandemic today and played 4 games with my brother and friend. It’s really fun, but limited to 2-4 players unfortunately. Another game to put in the cycle, though! On nights when there are fewer people there (or enough that we can split between two games), it’ll be good. I might also order the expansion if it gets a good reception in our group… it adds more roles and increases the variety quite a bit.
A bit about the game (people who don’t care, just skip over this):
- It’s a cooperative game, everyone either wins as a team or loses as a team. Good for those days when you don’t feel like being super competitive between people.
- Each player gets a special ability only they can use. Some people have better movement, others have better disease curing, etc. There are 5 roles and you get them assigned to you randomly. Since a max of 4 players can play, one role is not used. (The more players, generally the harder the game is)
- Goal of the game is to move around the game board (which is a map of the world), trying to cure diseases which are popping up due to event cards that are being played by the AI turn.
- Each turn you have 4 actions to spend. Moving between adjacent cities costs 1 action, for example. Removing disease from an infected city costs an action. So you could move 4 times, or move 2 times, cure a disease, move again, etc. Then, you draw some cards and then the AI takes a turn, infecting more cities.
- The players win if they cure all 4 diseases. Curing a disease requires holding 5 cards of that disease’s color (and you can hold 7 maximum) and spending an action. Players can trade cards between each other, providing they meet a few fairly difficult conditions (they must both be on the same city, among others).
- The players lose if… well, a ton of stuff happens. They could run out of cards, the disease can spread too far, they could let too many outbreaks happen, and so on. The game requires a ton of cooperation and discussing strategies, and these strategies change pretty much every turn as the board becomes more infected and people have to juggle moving around trying to contain viruses and moving around to try and meet up and exchange cards.
- It’s really fun and easy to explain. Halfway through the first game, we already knew what we were trying to do and some good ways to approach the problem. It feels very satisfying to wipe stuff off the board after coordinating efforts between multiple players. Apparently, it’s also a difficult game where losing is as fun as winning (though we didn’t lose tonight!) The game can be made harder very easily simply by adding one more bad card into the game (allowing 3 difficulties). The expansion, which I don’t have yet, also has some new virus forms and neat stuff like that which can make the game harder.
I’ll def try that Ricky. I’m also strongly thinking about picking up the Penny Arcade game. They say it’s a deck building game like dominion, so could be fun.
I wonder if Pandemic can actually be played with 5 players, using all the roles. I don’t see why it can’t be the case.

Whelp, I work tonight then I have the next four days off. I need to get back to jamming some games. I’m seriously out of form.
don’t have any SF resolutions (anti-air better?), but i have the same general one as every other year. find some happiness, don’t ruin someone else’s life doing it.
In theory, it’s kind of possible to just add a 5th player who uses the 5th role. The problem then comes that everyone is spread way too thin on the game board, and coordinating efforts between all the players is just really hard. I think the expansion has rules for a 5th player (they add more “special event” cards, which are good for the players, to throw into the game) and that makes playing with more people not quite as hard. In the base game, there are only 5 total special event cards that are always in the game. In the expansion, since there are more, you add 2 to the deck for each player. So it means 2 players isn’t quite as easy, 4 players quite as hard. Most reviews I’ve read for the expansion claim that 5 players is still a little too slow/cumbersome, but we can try it.
Going to hold off on ordering the expansion for now though, just to make sure that people in the group actually like playing the game before spending more money on it.
hey ricky what are you up to tonight? do you wanna play some mcdonalds?
2012 is going to be a really big year for me. Likely to do a ton of important life changes that have been a long time coming. All of them will probably mean I play SF less, unless SFxT really hooks me or something. Still don’t want to completely vanish from the scene just yet, though.
lol, sure. I’ll bring Pandemic too… we can try the 2 player variant!
sure thing. just text me before you swing by.
