Calgary Thread 2011

ive been thrust into the corporate world since i was 19 years old, i’m as a rule probably 10-15 years younger than everyone around me at all times - these people being everything from older accountants, hotshot traders, oil execs, clueless IT managers, etc

when someone asks me what i do for fun im going to tell them: playing hockey, going skiing, but most of all, i loves me some SF

that definitely gets some strange looks. a lot of people will inquire about it some more and are generally at first reprehensive, but the cool people will definitely sympathise when they realize sf is not just a video game to some people, but a form of electronic competition. theres really no difference at all between darts, poker, f1, mma, nfl, or street fighter. they’re all competitive activities done for entertainment, its just that the medium for providing said competitive entertainment is a different vehicle in each case

maybe my view on people is a little jaded because im forced to be around faceless masses of individuals who are only brought together for the purpose of getting paid, so theres tension inherent in the environment(due to these people being brought together not for a common intrest(unless you count compensation)). this, compounded with the fact that i’m in IT so my interactions with people are instigated by a) something going wrong and disrupting their work or b) because they want something

who knows! i love you guys tho <3

See? Even I tried to live in the shoes of my enemies, even if it was just for Halloween.

DUDE i got these high powered magnets in my office used to stick shit to walls, and you can feel the magnetic fields when you put them inches away from eachother

sometimes i’ll be bored and ill just push magnets laying on the desk with the fields of other magnets and pray nobodys watching me cuz i would look like a loon

DUDE, that doesn’t sound healthy… can I buy two off you?

Tyler. Straight up. Don’t say sf or WoW with business peeps and whatnot. People in the industry do judge and they’re all fake. I know man…

If u tell ur boss u luv sf. He’ll thinks ure either wack or a stoner.
Not all, but a good number of them in my industry pho sho.

People in the office r all keyed about their Hollywood imagine. It’s sad

Meh, well Adam met my girlfriend, so I’m confident this isn’t me ;).

But I disagree with the fact that the majority of people judge one’s pass times. Fighting games and games in general are one of the first things I bring up about myself, and people generally react with a genuine laugh (including girls), followed by “that’s awesome” and the rest of the conversation is great. I think it’s all relative… If you expect people to think your hobby is weird they will.
Most people talk about “nerd” activities under their breath 'cus they feel they shouldn’t be proud of it, and that makes people around ones-self act weird. People in general, especially in Calgary are pretty chill and accepting:
Though my awesome muscles from Brussels might have something to do with people looking past my short comings ;). Hype for tonight!

lol I love the looks I get when I describe things to people
"how was your trip in vegas?"
“it was pretty sick. I won a few matches, got to meet some of the top players, saw some great stuff on the sunday”
“wait, what?”
"yeah I went to vegas for the world’s biggest video game tournament"
o_O ??!

what kinda music you listen to? “metal” “what, like Disturbed?” “here listen to this song, its by a band called Meshuggah” o_O
what’s your favorite movie? “Spirited Away. its about a 12 year old japanese girl whose parents get turned into pigs, so she has to work in a bath house for spirits until she can break the curse.” o_O

and so on

I disagree and give a +1,000,000 to sang’s comment… the vast majority of industry ppl are judgmental as hell. usually when I do tell people how I kill my time I play it for laughs

Dude, I have SF shit all over my office, and I talk about it all the time… no-one thinks I’m a weirdo / stoner.
I keep getting raises / promotions…
It doesn’t matter who you are or what you like, it’s what you do on the job.

By industry people what are we taking about? The business world in general?

Ok, fair enough.

I dunno, I do electrical designs for Imperial Oil and Amec for the Kearl oilsand project. I’m just relating my personal experience within the oil industry in Alberta.

But if u got an interview with them, I guess u can say street fighter is ur passion…

I guess I have girl qualifications, though I never really talk about it.

Being into videogames isn’t necessarily bad if you’re a programmer or work in IT. Chances are, many of your colleagues are too, even if just casually. Throughout my undergrad and Masters degrees in comp sci, I’d say like 80% of people played video games with some level of severity, and they all end up working somewhere, right?

Curling is actually really cool. But I like most sports. Tyler, we need to play hockey once the weather warms up.

People definitely do judge, but their “acceptance” if you will I find is almost entirely based on how much confidence is behind your words. If you talk about going to sf tourneys in vegas or etown of vancity like it ain’t no thang or you’re proud, then most people will treat it like a stamp or bug collection. If you’re all stereotype anime nerd-like in your delivery, ppl are gonna think you’re weird

that’s exactly it

Totally agree with the it/software development fields being full of generally nerdy cool people(except in large companies you get the odd old school, 55 year old novell admin who’s a dick because he’s scared about his job security)

On the otherhand, it people(especially consultants…I know because I am one) are some of the dumbest, most fake people this side of the moon. They’re like used car salesmen for old oil execs in smb who don’t know a mouse from a monitor and charge them 10000x for shit they don’t need in the first place

Software developers are usually chill dudes except for the ones who think they’re IT guys and do dumb things like rattle of computer part specs and complain their IT department doesn’t upgrade their bios enough like they’re experts

And yeah Ricky once it warms up I def wanna hit the pond

Who would have thunk IT was such a cut throat business?

People in oil and gas call it THE INDUSTRY just like we refer to THE SCENE.

But yes IT peeps are terrified of people who know more / work harder / are younger than they are because unless they’re fucking good it’s just proof of their Dinosaur . . . ness

I just got promoted to be the IT guy in my office.

Beyond my regular duties, it’s a piece of cake. Sure, it can take a lot of time, but really if you know what you’re doing then it’s a a cinch!

I could definitely see how the position can be fought for - in my office our head IT dude is now stationed in Winnipeg. I’m kind of doing his work for him here, so I have to be careful about stepping on toes.

Haha, today this dude I work with got an email from Shaw / Warner Brothers warning him about downloading movies… there was a huge panic and everyone immediately came to my office and was like “WTFOMGBBQ!!!”

That’s me except the part where I rip people off and the other bad stuff. Where are you staying when you come down for Keep it Classy 2?

I make internets, am i a cool dude?

I aim for the neckbeard identity to be honest~

He’s just rewording what I said and you didn’t agree with me at all
