I liked FFXII because you could stare at Fran’s ass the whole time :wgrin:.
Seriously though, I thought the writing for it was a notch and a half above anything Square had released until and since then. You can tell the localization team kew what they were doing.
Still planning on having people over on Sunday. Sang you’re always welcome to come by.
Anyone else can come too, but I’d appreciate a heads up just in case in gets too big though.
GGs Phil. Lag was frustrating at times (missed uppercuts, dropped combos) but I guess it’s about as good as my internet can hope to be. I was surprised it worked as well as it did. Honda is a BS character.
I love FF12, but good luck 100%ing it. Be prepared to invest about 140 hours, minimum. (Assuming you mean TRUE 100%, getting all weapons and stuff… if you just mean beating all bosses, then probably around 100-110 hours)
Mike, I met the guy who localized FF12 (and Phoenix Wright 1, Vagrant Story and a few other big games). He held a panel at PAX. The amount of work he and his team put into FF12’s localization was insane. Like, do you remember that sky city Bhujerba? Everyone talked with sort of a middle-eastern accent (calling friends “bhadra” and using specific words for “enemy”, “fight”, etc). He said he researched the sanskrit language and cultures of people who used that language and based the translation for that city on that. He also showed specific examples of particularly hard translations from the Japanese original and how he basically had to rewrite the entire script for the whole game. It was an awesome talk.
I never really fathomed how insane translating from Japanese is. Like, he’ll show examples of a character with an Osaka accent, telling Osaka jokes. Everyone in Japan would find it funny, but how do you make sure that humor is not lost in translation? How do you translate puns from Japanese into English? In essence you have to add your own flair and style to the translation that wasn’t there in the original, so the FF12 we all end up reading is really only like … 30% of the original Square writing, and 70% the work of like 3 people adding their own flavor to preserve what they think the original “feel” is. It’s no wonder these guys have to be incredibly good at writing English, in addition to being excellent translators.
The guy who led the translation team for FF12 has a Master’s degree in ancient Japanese literature from Harvard. How cool is that?
Also, I’m probably interested in coming over on Sunday unless it’s super cold and blizzardy out.
Do we know how assists work in MvC3 yet? I never see anybody use them in the vids…
I’ll be trying to use MODOK/Arthur/Dormammy. With my luck, they’ll end up being low-tier to boot. I seem to have a knack for this type of thing.
I also tried watching the super hero squad to catch a bit of Modok… and man… it’s painful. Heart-breaking even. I guess this is what happens when Marvel gets bought up by Disney?
My kid loves super hero squad, and the humor is actually pretty good too, he’s got almost all the action figures and all the playsets too. Oh and that cartoon was out before Disney bought Marvel
^ This. A million times this. How can you hate on Super Hero Squad! The writing in that show is genius! The humor is reminiscent of the Emperor’s New Groove. Super awesome to watch while blazed, as well. Marvel made it as a gate-way show to hook kids on Marvel early, and it was around before Disney bought them. I personally think the show is a classic haha.
There’s an episode where Miss Marvel has a spell cast on her and she falls madly in love with MODOK, and another episode with Doctor Doom’s mother who is just a Doctor Doom suit in an apron with pink glasses and hair and a Jewish accent! Genius I say.
And I didn’t remember any optional bosses from FFX other than the quest chain for Anima, but that’s probably because they were all so easy. If memory serves the hardest boss in that game was the first fight against Seymore when he summons Anima… It’s no Weigraf though (or ruby weapon). I never got into FFXII 'cus the combat system just made me want to play WoW a couple hours in :(.
And I don’t see how Dormammu or MODOK could possibly end up low-tier. Dormammu looks beast, and so much fun to play; fitting for a rivial of the Sorcerer Supreme ;). Definitely no Hakan, haha. But I do plan to play this game with a Greg mentality of sticking with the characters I like no matter what…
the last hidden boss for ffx was nemesis, in that monster arena thing. i remember beating him by just using auto-haste and quick hit over and over and over again until his turn came up, letting a summon eat his damage during his turn, then going back to quick hit ad nauseum.
i’m already about 50% done the hunts, and i’m at the bahamut. so i can do whatever i want now
Right now i’m working on 100%ing the bestiary by zone. grabbing all the rare game too. Takes forever lol. My main goal is to 100% the sky pirates den, in doing that you’ve basically 100%'d the game. i’m not too concerned about grabbing ultimate weapons cause that just involves grinding. but if that’s what i’m going to be doing anyways, i might just look it up and see where i can find stuff. Plus, I’ve never had the tournesol before, so i wanna see how i can get it.
EDIT: No dice on the zodiac spear. friend and i played through this game together and fo rsome reason he played a bunch of the intro without me. so he opened a couple chests.
Getting the Zodiac Spear was one of the more frustrating things to do in the game. Beating the Firebomb on the bridge was a pain at a low level and then trying to outrun all fights to get the spear was a pain as well.
I just picked up the complete first season of super hero squad at future shop for $21, I originally only had the first ten episodes in volumes 1&2. Looks like I will be running a marathon with my kid later
all good man. i ended up going to a friend’s place and playing the new golden eye 007 on a whim, sorry i didn’t PM you back. we’ll have to have some games another time.
Hey Ricky if you like the sort of stuff that goes into translating a game look up mother 3 fan translation. Lot of work went into that and they kept a log of everything.
Really? I thought that was super awesome. Going into the Necrohol when you were level 25 and you could get one-hit KOed at any turn was really intense. One of my favorite parts of the whole game! One of the main reasons I really liked FF12 was because you could run into a super strong monster anywhere, and there were SO many zones that you could accidentally stumble into at any time (the waterways, zertinan caverns, the necrohol, nabreus deadlands, cerobi steppe, sochen cave palace, the list goes on and on) that had monsters way stronger than you. It really was like trying to tame a new world. Then, when you were strong enough later to go back and smoke them, it was incredibly satisfying.
To Jamie, the tournesol isn’t too bad to get. I think it takes about 5 hours of grinding on average, depending on what you already have. If you’re looking to max out the rare bestiary… man, good luck to ya. 200 hours, maybe? lol
Also, as I’m sure some of you know, they TOTALLY broke the RNG in FF12. There’s a chest in Henne Mines where you can get the Zodiac Spear 1/1000 of the time, but you can set it up so it ALWAYS shows up (and the chest respawns). If you just want one to make up for missing it earlier, it’s pretty easy to do.
Come to think of it, there’s probably ways you can make certain rare monsters spawn a lot faster too.
Man, <3 FF12. The only thing I really didn’t like about it was a lot of the rare random chest stuff. But the feeling of exploration was enough to make me forget about that. Oh, and I also think FF12 was the first game where the game world actually felt alive to me. Like… the cities were densely populated by NPCs and Rabanastre was just incredibly huge for a FF city. It really felt like a million people lived in every city.
Random fact of the day: how do you pronounce bestiary? I thought it was bes-TIE-ah-ree for a long time, then I looked it up one day. It’s apparently BESS-chee-air-ree. Weird!
Lots of good dungeons
Good story
Good characters
So much fighting to do
Lots of spells and customization
Free roaming.
It is a truly sick game. I don’t think mastering bescheeairy will be too bad. I know where to find lots of enemies already. Some rare game is annoying but its usually not too bad.
Just opened up barheim passage and ready to clean that place out, then on to ozmone zertinan and golmore. Ill probable save lhusu for when I get gilgamesh mark. Still don’t have key yet anyway.
I dunno, I’m at 67 hours now. Have all mist concurrences. Lol how did you like getting black hole Ricky? Took me forever…
