C.Viper Q&A: Quick questions here please!

Yeah i got a TE so the sanwa part is covered i just need to practice the hell out of it because it is as useful as it is difficult

Any criticisms? This is one of the most rare things ever, I never beat Purrin, but I got lucky to run into him on an off day I guess.

Well for me I didn’t really understand the abuse of focus attack in that match. It seems pretty hard to time a FA hit against a burn kick. Plus if Purrin was smarter he would have started purposely jumping in empty and throwing you or jump in with HK and cancel into burn kick air chain which would beat your focus for sure. Especially with how low priority her focus attack has. If it wasn’t for the focus guard it’d be pretty useless. Watching some Japanese Viper mirrors…I’ve never seen any Viper player use focus attack in a mirror match (against burn kicks any ways). Way too risky.

I say stick to blocking and just crouch under or HP knuckle obvious burn kick attempts. Viper’s focus is pretty sorry ass so just save it to beat obvious one hit shit once in a while to mix things up. If you start using it multiple times in a round like that like your character’s name is Ryu…well pick Ryu then. It’s not a bad idea to use it more often like that in the Vega matchup since he’s usually either going to hit you with a one hit dive or try to throw you. Plus Wall Dive is way more telegraphed of a move with all the flying back and leaping through the air. Viper can create too many shenanigans and bait it way too easily. There were a couple times where Purrin saw you going for the FA and just crossed up burn kicked behind you and owned the FA.

Also in the middle of the second round you had Ultra and AA’d him with HP Knuckle and had all day to combo into Ultra and didn’t go for it. Against better players you don’t wanna miss obvious setups for damage like that. You can’t midscreen Ultra Viper normally without AA HP knuckling her or SJC focus cancelling so take advantage of the easy mode setups for big damage off of jump ins. Ultra does big damage on Viper so you don’t wanna miss out. Overall it was hard to see what was going on in the match because of the low frame rate and the fact that Viper mirrors are random as hell in general.

Lol yeah sorry for the shitty ass quality, was using a digital camera to record >.<

Easy question: is it bad to have a really defensive Viper style? I tend to just stay back and use a move to counter however it is the opponent tries to get in.

Viper is suuuper stylistic imo, thats why its so cool to see other players get good with her because we tend to see these vastly different play styles that accentuate those players strong points( implied). Like Uryo plays very defensive, but Dashio(sp?) plays way more reckless. Personally I am more offensively inclined, but it depends on the character and what kind of stick I have at the moment, if I have a TE I play very aggressively

yes, you can’t play scared with Viper, her biggest strength is having momentum and mixing people up you can’t do that playing turtle

^ There’s a difference between being scared and turtling though.

I always turtle Blanka. Nydrin told me to chip away with seismo and zone, so that’s how I learned to play a lot of my matches. I think her strongest point is getting people to run into Viper’s tools to get in position for the mix ups, rather than just jumping at them and getting lucky.

Seismo zoning gets them to move. When you know where they want to move, you can anti air knuckle…jump back burning kick (against human-projectiles) and more, to gain the opportunity of a knockdown. Jumping at them risks taking damage from a wrong guess. So I prefer to use seismos to soften them up…

That’s just a personal preference though, some people are just good at jumping in and getting the knockdown that way.

idk, I’m not sure yet if I want to play defense because I don’t have the skills yet to effectively put any kind of pressure on or if that’s really how I wanna play. I know one thing though, playing defense has done wonders for me like playing offense never could.

Yeah there’s certain matchups where you want to play more defensively and reactively. You can’t go wilin out on Blanka and expect to win a match. Once he gets an Ultra he’s a bomb waiting to go off. Get hit by it and Viper loses about 70 percent. 70 percent health loss for fighting Blanka a bit recklessly? I don’t know about you but I’m not rushing down a bomb. His jump is quicker than yours and his normals do a good job outprioritizing yours. Not to mention random ball and electricity shut down excessive rushing pretty quick. It’s pretty much a match where you have to let Blanka move first and react to what he does. This is where Viper’s strong suit is since she has a lot of options for punishing things that he likes to do on the regular.

Well yeah, I didn’t mean to say it in a way that meant turtle=scared, certainly that’s not true. However I think against most opponents playing pure turtle is often a lack of coinfidence in your ability to play good offense. Zangief, Blanka, or what have you sure there are matchups where it’s simply not in your best interest to be that aggressive. However he was asking it in a way that made me think he wanted to turtle all the time no matter the match up, and to me that’s just not optimizing her tools. If you want to play turtle to set up offense that’s a different story, cause in that case at least you are springing into offense when the time is right. If you’re more comfortable reading for offense than fishing for it, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, but to stay back constantly be reseting at full screen is not her strong suit.

Weeeeeell, I tend to wait for shit to come to me instead of goin’ in hard. Right now, I can’t pull off a combo to save my life. ^So if I try to spring into action like you said, I usually get beaten like a slave. So for a while I’m just taking a reactionary approach and working on my offense in training mode. When I get a stick I’ll prolly be goin’ off on offense though.

Focus Attack can be useful against Viper mirrors IMO, but it depends on the situation, if someone tries a ground Burning Kick on you and you anticipate it, they are pretty much dead if you FA it and counter. Also, if someone goes crazy with the SJ Burning Kicks, once in a while it’s okay to just FA and dash immediately away to set yourself at a distance. Then you can do HP TK or jump up RH if they try more SJ BKs.

Viper mirrors is a huge game of counters, almost like paper/rock/scissors.

  • Burning Kicks beat or avoid Seismos if timed right
  • HP Thunder Knuckle beats BKs if done early
  • Throws beat HP TK up close, especially on wake-up
  • EX Seismo Feints or weak BKs beat throws
  • Focus Attacks will beat ground BKs if they are predictable, can go for crumple stun

Viper has many exploitable weaknesses against another Viper, so your best bet is just to either dominate the offensive tempo or play the best defense. Even a good Viper may have trouble against an average Viper because of the unpredictable nature of the matchup and Viper’s general weaknesses can be countered… by Viper herself.

Yeah it’s a very “what if” kinda matchup. I think it’s a really fun match to play because of the randomness of it. You’re in a decision making process the entire match. You just also happen to be moving at blinding speeds trying to do it.

question : Jumping in on shotos, i see pro videos of vipers that repeatedly jump in HK on ryu and ken and continue on with a combo, what do i need to do to pull this off?

whenever i go to jump in with HK i just get DP’d out of the air, how come i see it so much in videos?

I’m still working on it myself but I think the jist is to get the j.HK to hit behind their DP where there is no offensive hit box. If you hit them while they’re still grounded it’s combo city. So basically you’re trying to cross up their shoryuken by safe jumping at them right before the DP comes out. If you get hit it probably means you’re jumping into the DP head on and not behind it trying to hit their back shoulder.

vs ryu you basically can not jump vs him, unless you are jumping out of you cross up range via flame kicks to bait dp’s. Otherwise you have to set up jump ins so that they are not in dp mode…ala c.mk xx feint …

DJ: I’ve beaten or made dp’s whiff but its really finicky, and usually the only times I try is when I have some perfect knockdown like back throw. Either way I hate thinking im gonna be in safe air way then eat that damn dp into ultra >"

That’s what I figured. Viper’s becomes a ball of a hit box during her j.HK any ways. I doubt there’s much that you can’t trade with.

quick question, when HJ canceling into ultra from normals, does anyone else use this method?

s.hp, 450 full rotation CCW from down, 3P?

what is the correct way to c. FP to Ex Seismo.

and jumping RH to standing FP to ex.seismo

I can do standing FP to ex seismo to HJCBK…but when i try to incorporate the ex seismo it never comes out. very inconsistent on my part. seems the timing is different but i dont know when to do the ex seismo motion. help please. thanks.
