Don’t get me wrong, I fucking love uncharted.
Uncharted is pretty cool, but i have to agree with Ve, it’s more of a playble movie than a real gaming experience.
I also forgot to name demon’s souls as one of my all-time-favs. Got that game in the US and EU versions, and will probably get the asia version too before they shut down the servers. Love that game.
Uncharted was awesome. it was the greatest action/adventure game i ever played. Both 3 and 2 were amazing. I felt two was better than three but three was still really fun it just that 3 got very interesting towards the end and it got really interesting in 2 at the beginning
Uncharted is awesome, but here’s the difference between it and those 4 games I listed.
In Uncharted, Story, visuals, gameplay, etc are all working in tandem to deliver an awesome (very cinematic) experience.
In Persona 4 (for example), Story, Visuals, and Gameplay are all the same thing. They are all inseparable parts of the whole.
Majoras Mask is also my favorite Zelda game. That game was exceptionally deep as far as the story goes… it wasnt your typical good guy kill bad guy save the world type of game… it has so many little things in the story about friendship, trust, and other things that made the game amazing once you finished it and thought about everything and put it into perspective.
I also love how exceptionally dark it was for a Zelda game along with its Godlike soundtrack.
Skyward Sword turned out to be my 2nd favorite Zelda ever… OOT 3rd.
My favorite game ever (and will probably never be dethroned) is Super Metroid. Game had a perfect story, controls, adventure, and soundtrack. Completely flawless.
Super metroid is actually another good example of what I’m talking about.
What I’m talking about is theme. Good games look and play great, the amazing games, do that and are expertly themed…
In the Zelda example, OoT is probably the better game from a strictly objective standpoint, but its overall themeing is very lazy and the whole thing really is just a bunch of excellent of disparate elements tied together. Majora’s mask has most of the same gameply, but slightly worse overall design and pacing, it’s better however because of how well themed it is. It ties everything together in a way that OoT can’t touch.
This is also Mario’s biggest weakness. Mario games literally have almost no theme, they are just level packs. Sonic however, has a few simple, but distinct themes, the most obvious being speed. This reliance on themeing is why as Sonic games evolved they began to feature attempts (keyword attempt) at grandiose plots and character arcs, where-as mario just remained more simple level packs. In fact, the only mario game that featured any attempt at theme was Sunshine, and ironically, it’s the least liked (but my personal favorite).
paper mario had a theme. its about paper.
My top 5 favorite nonfighting games would probably be:
Uncharted 2, Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy VII, and Heavy Rain. I never really played many games until college. but i really enjoyed dead space 2. The multiplayer was really fun and the story was scary as well as awesome lol. its hard to find good horror games
A lot of what makes a good game comes down to preference. Super Metroid to me is the perfect game because of how much satisfaction I get out of it when I play it. I dont get that same satisfaction from other games that might be expertly themed as you put it.
I’m not talking about what has to be your personal favorite. Your favorite can be whatever you want it to be.
And Super Metroid is expertly themed. It was an example of this done right. That theme being isolation.
Fun fact: sitting in the train now to get home from work, and reading in the viper forums of srk made me more hype to get home and play some FFXIII-2 than to play marvel… o.O
Top 5 non marvel games?
THERE ARE NON MARVEL GAMES?!?!?!
Seriously though… (actually why is this so hard? I can’t remember what games I like or used to play the shit out of, I might have to edit this list)
Castlevania: SOTN
Quake 1
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (over 1000 hours, probably the only non FG I’ll ever play that much)
Raiden 2
Fallout 2 and 3
SOTN is borderline perfect imo.
Best games I’ve played are
Baldurs Gate 1
Baldurs Gate 2 (best MMO ever)
Fallout 2 & 3
Ice Wind D.A.L.E.
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Fatal Frame Series
FreeScape 2 (Best Space Flight simulation ever)
So basically any game made by Bioware before the age of make everything easy for stupid fucks and then Mass Effect series
I would like the game more if the busted weapons / spells were slightly less busted. It’s tough to make the game actually hard, ya know? It’s still my #1 favorite even with that issue.
There are so many good concepts in various games that just don’t have the complete package. Marvel 2 and Marvel 3 are the only games I’ve played that feel complete to me as there’s always more I can understand them. There are some other really good games I like though.
SotN
P2:EP
Evo: Quest for Eden
Whats SotN
castlevania: symphony of the night
Loved Heavy Rain. I want more games like it. The idea that if you lose a character you really lose them for the rest of the game and it changes the way the story flows was crazy on so many levels. It made the fight scenes so much more intense. You must up that button sequence and the Olivia Benson lookalike is dead. Couldn’t figure out that puzzle? You just killed that other character. It was so fulfilling to achieve something in Heavy Rain.
Sad thing is the same mindset that made Quantic Dream make a game like Heavy Rain is the same mindset that’s keeping them from continuing making more games in that style.
Other favs:
FFVII, FFVIII, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story (though I never finished it), Legend of Dragoon, Uncharted 2, inFamous 1 & 2, Parasite Eve 1, MGS4, Dark Sector (extremely underrated game), Heavenly Sword
Best part is the lady who did the music for that game did the score for Skullgirls as well. I’ll definitely be doing nothing but just listening to the soundtrack when I first get it.
I see. I think I have that. Ill give it a try. I bought my xbox 360 used and the guy left his games on there and this was one of them lol.
Also if we are talking about games with the best music, I would say Rayman Origins wins in that department lol
