Buying Games at Launch - Yay or Nay?

I like to ask if there anything exclusive worth getting from the pre-order bonus?
If not, its worth it to wait, especially when it comes to PC games on Steam.

Most of my console game purchases of late has been for game systems long since been discontinued.

Yea as said, it just depends on the game for me. I wait on a lot of stuff (Still don;t own GTAV for example) but will day 1 Bayonetta 2 or Bloodborne.

Depends on the game and/or developer. But to agree with an earlier post kinda no point in waiting on a high profile Nintendo first party game to drop price lol

Are you actually going to play the crap out of it right when it comes out? Yes, buy it right away.

If your answer is “when I get around to it”, you can – at the very least – afford to wait until 2 weeks after it comes out and drops to $40. More than likely you won’t care if you wait 6 months when it’s on sale for 20-25.

Depends. Nintendo first party titles are almost always first days for me unless it’s Metroid because I’ve never been a fan of the series.

I also try to buy a lot of Koei games release day or release week because they’re fucking hard to find after the first couple of weeks.

I generally don’t do Legendary or Collector bundles. The last one I bought was Uncharted 3.

i buy games day 1 then never even play them. nigga whos got time to play an rpg when i can learn another mag/rp reset?

Exactly, getting a GOTY edition with everything included for 75% off>>>>>>>>day 1 vanilla version.

I can’t be bothered to keep up with all the insane amount of DLC all the games I want will eventually have, so I always wait until everything is bundled together and by then it’s super cheap. I’m happy to play catchup for the rest of my life, I don’t care that I’m playing games a year or two after everyone else. My rule of thumb for the past 5 years is never paying more than $10 for a PC game, spending lets say $200 or so during a steam sale when everything I want is 66% or 75% has me covered for the next year or two so I can admire future upcoming games from afar while not getting all worked up afpoe their release. I realize though that if everyone was as cheap as me there would be no gaming industry  I’m paying $15 for Azure Striker: Gunvolt because its a 3DS exclusive and Nintendo games rarely get discounts and when they do it’s usually just a few dollars off.

Fuck you @Unreallystic‌ this thread reminded me my dumbass gave $60 to Activision on day 1 for Diablo 3 :chainsaw:

I just find that with GotY editions, I hardly ever play through them…its just something that gets added to the backlog. I’ve got PS2 games still in the wrapper haha. It’s really day 1s that get the playtime, and if its ever competitive, the best time to join is at the start, playing catch-up is NO FUN. Especially in something with an organic community that is always shifting strategies.

I’ve honestly gotten to the point that outside of a few cases, if it isn’t something I want day 1, I most likely should avoid it as it won’t get played.

I can’t afford to buy games whole sale these days. Doesn’t help that most games aren’t worth the 60 bucks release price.

if its a game I care about and has multiplayer then no reason to wait. I don’t wanna be the guy buying it 2 months later then get pwnt by everyone online. single player games are whatever. I am not in a hurry to play anything unless its a new metal gear game.

Gotta be a damn good game to get day one…this year the only games I plan on getting on launch are dragon age inquisition and maybe destiny. No time to play anything except games I really really like.

I always wait for the price drop unless I’m buying Nintendo. Nintendo games do not depreciate, and I do not know why. Do people like Mario THAT much?

Its because Nintendo’s games have staying power. They still sell a lot months after release while other games sales dwindle after the first month.

I would own more Nintendo games if they drop the price on them.

IDK if Diablo 3 is a good example. Blizzard ripped off the player base.

“Sorry Mario, the patches this game needed badly are on another platform.”

Come to think of it I don’t think I even preordered a single game this year. This has been a really shitty year for games.

It more has to do with Nintendo refusing to drop the prices. Sony and MS are companies with gaming as a division, where Nintendo is a gaming company so it’s more in their interest to set this precedent for their wares compared to the twins. Nintendo doesn’t budge, which sets the precedent of “Might as well get it now, since it’s not dropping in price anytime soon.”

The quick price drops devalue your produce and you can hear about it now when devs talk about not making money, or it’s hard to make money on, because everyone waits for sales, which will happen and at dirt cheap prices. Iwata talked about this at one of the GDC’s and got roasted for it at the time, but in the end he was right.

I pretty much only buy day one. Waiting for games to go on sale is completely pointless to me. I don’t even play all of the games I want to now so what is the point in adding to my backlog with even more games (even if they are $5) that i’ll never get around to. If I’m not excited enough for a game to pay $60 then I just except that I’ll probably never play it. There are too many titles being released for me to hope to keep up and that doesn’t even take into account all the of the free PS+ games.

Yeah, if I’m not excited to play when it drops, then there’s very little chance I’ll be bothered to play later down the line let alone buy. I’ll wait if two games release around the same time and I want to give myself the chance to focus on one if they’re single player experiences.
