Buying a new arcade stick

Hey guys,

I’ve been playing on a Hori V3 fightstick for a couple years now, but recently gave it to my nephew as a gift. I was thinking of just buying another V3 but I figure I wanted to try something new and ask more experienced stick enthusiasts if they had any suggestions. These are kind of the features that I’m looking for in my new fightstick, preferably it should play very similarly to my old V3.

  • 6 button layout (I know most madcatz and hori sticks are 8 button layouts, but the only fightstick I’ve ever owned was a V3 and I prefer the 6 button layout)
  • the stick has to be on the lighter side (most serious gamers swear by a solid, heavier base to their sticks, but I tried my friend’s Qanba and the weight was kind of cumbersome)
  • PS3 (only system I own)
  • the last feature I’m looking for is quality Sanwa joystick and buttons which is the really the only feature the V3 doesn’t have

So that’s pretty much it. Would any of you know of a fightstick that’s similar to a Hori V3, yet has quality Sanwa parts? If not, I have no problem just buying another V3, but I thought I’d ask. Thanks =]

Well I think a good choice to go to for a light, cheap stick is go to tek-innovations.com and buy a DIY case. Unfortunately you can’t buy the mini one atm from what I see there, but these are very light and easy to assemble. The downside is that the case alone is $55, but you can easily make it 6 buttons, store a few other buttons elsewhere for start, select, home, L1, and L2 if you want on the back or side. For wiring up everything to a PCB, there are a lot of good tutorials on it and for PCBs I’d go with the MC Cthulhu if you don’t need Xbox 360 support. Wiring up the stick should be relatively easy, if you decide to go for a PS360+ then it can be completely solderless. For prebuilt sticks that are light and 6 button by default, nothing comes to mind except for the BlazBlue ChronoPhantasma Extend stick which works on PS3 and PS4, but that doesn’t have Sanwa or Seimitsu parts.

You could just buy another V3 and install Sanwa parts.

thanks for both of the suggestions, unfortunately i’m not too interested in DIY kits or modding an existing V3, but i appreciate the suggestions. i’m looking for something that already has these things out of box, but i guess a light, portable 6 button sanwa stick doesn’t exist? its all good, i don’t mind getting another V3

The only light/portable, 6-button, all-Sanwa out-of-the-box stick that I’m aware of is the Exar Exaprize USB Stick Sanwa Edition.

I tried to google-image-search for a picture for you, but it turns out a good chunk of the pics that come up when googling “exar exarprize sanwa” are my own pictures (including the one above).

thanks tensho and freedomgundam. those are some great looking sticks you recommended. definitely will be checking them out
