Burn in the Flames of the Faltine! Dormammu Combo/Strategy Discussion thread

^ Found some self sufficient combos for Dorm with missiles building 2 spells (normally 2B) can get 1.1m handily. May have a vid later but yeah I really like 2B for footsies, helps that 1B and 2B both cause soft knockdown too means you can set up quick tech roll traps

nice , upload a vid! . and yeah only thing thats missing from 2b IMO is that on block it doesnt push back at all , if it pushed back say full screen I would use it much more.

Thanks everyone so much for the great answers! Karst, the matchup specific spell casting explanation was quite insightful! Any others off the top of your head like hawk and wesk where you have a specific spell that can help shut them down? I suppose some would be more obvious, but I never would’ve thought of 3D for hawk!

The only thing I take issue with (respectfully of course) is that one can’t give examples of missiles-assisted keepaway lockdown sequences. I agree fully its an artform that requires a lot of freestyle, but I’m 200% certain there are some patterns that get repeated regularly and one could also easily say something like, “I tend to call missiles right before a…” or “after stalking flare, call missiles, then…” etc. I’m not askin for a full flow chart, but just some ideas from strong dorm players with which to build on my own lockdown “paintings.”

The team I’m running has been mag dorm doom (with a goal of getting dorm in before mag dies so I have disruptah-ports as well as missile art. What sucks is I’m in a position where I have no. Internet (aside my phone) and the local tmobile tower is busted so I’m stuck on 2G. The point of this violin solo is if I could, I just watch a shit ton of f-champ since he runs the exact team, but I really can’t at the moment. So apologies for asking questions with more spoon-feedery than I normally would after some research. Thanks again, all!

I’ve recently been getting really good at catching people in 3C0D spell… instead of an incoming mixup I throw down flame carpet, and stalking flare. Then try to rape with purifications so they feel that they’re only way in is on the ground, Then I finally cast the spell lol (Not a legit set-up, more of a mind game). I get it all the time on wolverine players who get fustrated and just try to beserker slash their way in.

I have a couple other setups I do, which work pretty good, only problem is if you miss, you’re probably dead lol so I see why people don’t really bother with 3C, because of the risks. Imma make a video to show that it is quite viable…

I hate anyone right now that runs Dorm with Spencer. Can connect 3C for free and do 600K+ meterless damage before tagging them with carpet + slant shot + 3C.

Zak Bennett was doing some ridiculous Flame Carpet OTG combos today. It involved about 4 flame carpet juggles in the corner and had spell charging and tiger knee liberation within the combo. Not sure if it was specific to his assists but it was fricking beautiful. Shame the flame carpet juggles only work on a handful of the cast like Arthur and Wolverine.

Link?

Unfortunately he rarely enters our weekly tournaments and plays casuals on the side most the time. I think he plays online alot too. Besides our streamer is away for the week preparing for streaming the SF tournament at Dreamhack so nothing was recorded today.

Youll probably have to wait until Evo to see it lol. STSFN.

So karst, what is that sequence you mentioned with 9 flares?

Purification x Stalking Flare, Dark Harmonizer, Purification, Purification x Stalking Flare, repeat. Each series of two Purifications + Dark Harmonizer builds half a bar, so if you start with 5 bars your meter goes like this:
5.0
4.0 (Flare)
4.5
3.5 (Flare)
4.0
3.0 (Flare)
3.5
2.5 (Flare)
3.0
2.0 (Flare)
2.5
1.5 (Flare)
2.0
1.0 (Flare)
1.5
0.5 (Flare)
1.0
0.0 (Flare)

(Flare) means that the meter went down as the result of Stalking Flare being cast. I haven’t really tinkered with it since Vanilla, but you can probably throw in a Dark Matter before the second Purification in each series for extra meter and chip. The full series rarely plays out like this in a match, but plenty of people try lots of things that make them get hit by Stalking Flare, which results in more meter for you and thus more flares. The basic principle is: “Do you have meter? Good, then cancel Purification into Stalking Flare.” Sometimes I’ll Mass Change M to make the flare cross-up, but that dampens the meter generation so it’s something I do maybe 1/3 flares against an opponent.

It’s not a bad idea to use one of the flares as an opportunity to charge Dark Spells. If you’re facing a character that has no response to the series, they will start to do crazy and desperate things to get out of the chip. Total chip, without advancing guard, is 1.5 million damage after all 9 flares have been thrown out. A surprising number of character don’t have an answer to the flares.

Ideally, you call Morrigan after you recover from the Stalking Flare, and not before you cancel the second Purification into Stalking Flare (I mess this up, bad habit). This is to keep Morrigan’s DHCs as an option to protect Dormammu from craziness. Between Shadow Servant and Astral Vision, Morrigan can counter any response to Stalking Flare except for maybe Seven Rings of Raggador. Shadow Servant barely reaches full-screen when DHCed into. It’s not always worth the meter, though. Like against Ryu, by the time Shadow Servant gets to him Shinkuu Hadoken has worn down 3/4 of the Flares hits, so you get piddly damage off of it.

Excellent answer, thanks! From watching f.champ I notice he likes to call missiles right before casting a flare. Not too shocking, but good to know.

New question: any tips on setting up the disruptahport crossups? I think a lot of people would find that a silly question as, similar to morridoom, ignorant stream monsters tend to bitch how the shit takes no skill and plays itself, when in fact these tactics must be timed very precisely. Certainly disruptah teleport is a strong and cheap tactic, but good players can avoid it very well if it isn’t timed just so.

Therefore I was looking for any pointers and how and when to set it up to effectively call the beam. If one can force it to connect, its all gravy. But no matter how “brain dead” masta cj makes appear, tagging strong mobile players with it is easier said than done.

Thoughts? (Team is mag dorm ddoom-b, with the idea of getting dorm in while mag is still alive so 'mu has the option of missiles zoning and beam rushing)

When your opponent is coming down from a jump and is about to land, then you can go for the teleport crossup.

Do a block string canceled into Dark Matter, call assist at the same time, teleport.

Regular jumping then air dashing up, activating flight and air dashing upward then calling magneto completely off screen is a good tactic to. You could probably charge a spell or two up there whilst your at it.

Good advice from the folks above me, and I’ll add:

  1. Do it after a blocked Purification, which forces your opponent to the ground.
  2. Stalking Flare forces your opponent to the ground.
  3. Mix it with non-teleports to mess with your opponent’s head.
  4. Use teleport H sometimes with it - Dormammu still gets a full combo (never seen CJ do this, though).

Is it possible to relaunch in the corner with Doctor Strange’s Bolts assist using flame carpet? I saw a video recently which I can’t remember the name of where someone did this but I’ve not been able to pull it off myself (That’s what she said). Is it a timing thing? I will probably just stick with EoE Assist if it’s got a strict timing.

Testing it just now, you can easily do:

Air series into hard knockdown, call Strange and then about a third of a second later lay the Flame Carpet, then you let the first hit of the Bolts hit, then do a H, the second Bolt hits and then do S into your second air series. Simples.

How do you guys feel about the dorm strider pairing. Initially its a little weak but once dorm has spells he gets some pretty sick damage off of a strider hit. the team would be Zero/Dorm/Strider. Powered up Hadgenki is similar to task arrows. thoughts?

use doom instead

My strider is way better than doom I enjoy using strider and doom is a shitty anchor

no i

I mean zero/doom/strider
