Brainstorm with me

So at my work there was a Sony Reader and headphone display, they no longer needed it, so behind the store it went. I managed to rip a little lcd screen out of it, but its kind of funky in that there’s no real inputs except for a memory car reader. Id like to do something cool with it but just not sure what to do.

anyway heres what Ive got.
The size of the screen

The jacks at the bottom. Not sure what the “-5v+” or “MS” ones are, but “PB” is pushbutton, 1 being to pause the video, 2 and 3 to switch between demo videos, and 4 and 5 do nothing as far as I can tell. Then there’s “SP” 1 and 2 which are for speakers.

It runs of an SD memory card. The card has 3 videos (avi format, 720x432) on it, the first one plays automatically, then “PB2” causes the second to play, and “PB3”, the third. The first one starts playing again when the other two finish.

Two illuminated pushbuttons it came with.

Really, the only thing Ive been able to see me using this for is maybe a digital picture frame. I could create a video slideshow in the proper format, put it on an SD card with the same name as the videos on the original card. But maybe you guys have better ideas?

Potential digital picture display for arcade titles like B15’s cab.

get some vids of the favorite fighting game character edit them all together nicely, then install the thing at the bottom of nice acrylic case like the tek cases, with a clear top panel make all the wiring nice and neat after you rig it up. sorry i couldnt resist the idea of seeing a custom stick with a big screen inside of it, just for kicks

^ I was honestly thinking of something like that, but I’m trying to figure out a way to mount buttons ontop of it. I have a friend working for a tech company right now and says there maybe an led I can use but it’s very very expensive.

He also says theres another one that has slow voltage leakage, and uses energy when the image changes. So I’m thinking of putting a reverse LCD on a laptop, so you can add your own custom work.

If you are not afraid of opening it up, see if you can get a model/motherboard numbers and see if Sony used that in any other products/projects - if so maybe someone else has done the hard work of fitting RCA inputs to it?

I’d try to build it into a mini vewlix, lol, if you can get a signal into it ya know ? - would be a neat desktop display for retro consoles.
Also, touch screen overlay for digital music controls ?

All kinda out there ideas, but might be best with a digital picture frame.

Another issue with putting it in anything “portable” such as an arcade stick, is that it runs off a 12v dc cable. Ill probably open it up and take pics tonight but I opened it last night and the screen itself is connected to a large pcb (with the card reader mounted to it along with all the other stuff) via a small ribbon cable.

Hmm, my first idea would be the same as the_third.
I’d be interested, though, as to what kind of a refresh rate you can get out of that thing without some serious ghosting.

Do you care if it’s viable as a competitive fightstick, or is this more of an object d’art kind of a notion?

I’ve wanted something similar for my MAME cabinet as a movelist display. Could cook something up like that.

12v ouch. you can make it semi portable by putting a car battery on a skateboard and dragging it around (jk) :stuck_out_tongue:

12V Battery Holder : Battery Holders for AA, 27A, 23A for 12V LED Lighting

Most people who find something like this, generally try to mount this to their cars. Like those car mod shows, they put the bezel over and wire the inputs, fits in nicely with a little in car entertainment system. Another way to go is the Ben Heck method, make a portable gaming system. Regarding the other ideas such as putting them in arcade sticks or whatever, honestly that just seems like a waste of everything. There’s no real use and efficient way to mount em anyways. What would you do even if you did?

The only other salvageable idea was the sticking it in a computer idea, but not a laptop. I read a couple years ago about a guy who did a mod on his tower, which consisted of him installing a second monitor on the side, by taking it apart and mounting it on that removable side. It’s a little awkward, but it’s ok for putting in stat monitors for you system or making a picture slideshow.
