the fight itself wasn’t historical because hatton sucked ass. if mayweather sr. just dedicated his time to train hatton and not make stupid raps maybe they would have lasted till the 3rd round like roach predicted.
however, this win made pacquiao one of the all-time greats because of all the reasons you said. he’s just like takamura lol. conquering all those different weight classes.
Gotti, Jose Luis Castillo(x2), Chico Corrales, and Hatton.
Everytime Floyd beats someone after people have been talking mad shit about how he’s going to lose, when Floyd beats that ass there are a million excuses that follow afterwords.
No, no, no! it was definitely historical because Hatton hadn’t proven anything at Welterweight, but at 140 he had proven alot. He has never been defeated at 140 and and then went on to beat Kostya Tszyu (who was the undisputed champion at the weight class) by making him quit on his stool, then defeated Maussa, Juan Urango, and Malignaggi who were all legitimate top contenders at the weight class. That is why he won Fighter of the Year in 2005 from Maxboxing and The Ring Magazine. And just because he got KO’d by Mayweather doesn’t mean he sucks; it means he got defeated by a superior fighter. That is it. And don’t even listen to the sanctioning bodies, it is accepted in boxing circles that he is the real 140 pound champion. Whenever somebody moves up in weight and defeats the undisputed champion at the division, that is amazing. Doing it four times is all-time accomplishment levels. I don’t know your reasoning for not noticing this but this is in fact a very, very, very historic accomplishment.
You’re probably right, but when you see a fighter who’s undefeated in his natural weight class get decimated like that, I highly doubt a majority of the fault was solely on the fighter’s side. I just dont like the fact that Mayweather Sr talked all that shit before the fight and then not taking any responsibility after the results.
Nobody makes excuses for Mayweather at 130 pounds to his first two fights against Castillo. He was truly awesome at the weight and he did things in the ring that made your jaw drop. At the division he is at least top 3 or 4 all time (behind definitely Arguello and Julio Cesar Chavez and possibly Azumah Nelson), and he showed alot of heart in those two fights with Castillo. It was the four years in between that fight and the Baldomir fight that he gets criticized for in which he fought mediocre competition and bragged about being better than Sugar Ray Robinson. It was as if the fight against Castillo (he might have lost that first fight against him) made him scared to take chances, but for a couple of years he was turning into Roy Jones Jr. bad in terms of taking the road of least resistance. He deserved all the hate he got in that time so I feel no sympathy for him.
No it was Hatton’s fault. He was told to use defence and head movement, they went over it countless times in training.
He reverted back to his old style ( Like Moore and Roach predicted) there is only so much a trainer can do. If Hatton followed their game plan and lost yeah I’d say the trainer deserves some blame but he went against what he was tought and got his ass wrecked.
No doubt in my mind, Hatton probably had the intention to rough Pacquiao up earlier in the fight to prevent him establishing his rythm and to stamp his physical authority, then later in the round outbox him. That was a stupid thing to as he ended up getting caught cold.
He rematched Castillo, doubt it was fear. It’s chasing money things didn’t really go his way, he wanted a fight with De La Hoya and Mosley both turned him down.
He wanted to fight Zab whilst he was linear Welterweight champion ( a worthy foe) he lost to Baldomir.
I think he wanted to fight Tszyu but he lost shockingly to Hatton.
He beat the guy who beat Tzyu and beat the guy who beat Zab. He also beat Baldomir.
It’s not like he was fearful of fighting big names as he actually wanted to, it’s just that some of them lost their tune up matches.
I believe that was both Hatton and Mayweather’s plan, and even more so, their only plan because Hatton ended up going back to his old self as opposed to applying or adjusting to a different strategy, which it seems like they didnt have. Mayweather doesn’t want to admit Pacquiao/Roach’s better strategy, and, even worse, didn’t back up his own fighter afterwards.
He also struggled like hell in the rematch with Castillo (some actually had it a draw). Either way Castillo fought 24 rounds on par with Mayweather, and that might have put doubt in his head. And Mayweather entered into the 140 pound division in 2004 and fought once and was offered the Tszyu fight, but didn’t want to take it for some reason. Same thing went for a fight for Margarito (Arum put up 8 million bucks for the match and Mayweather declined). He got alot of hate at the time for taking on Judah for coming off a lost, because unlike with Erik Morales, he had been so inconsistent in his career, but he gained my respect for taking on Baldomir for the title. But in between that there was alot of time that was wasted in which instead of taking on guys like Cotto, Kostya, and Margarito in 2004-2005, he was inactive; squared off against overrated fighters that he knew stood no chance against him or fighters who just plain sucked like Henry Brusseles or a shot Sharmba Mitchell. He deserved all of the hate for at least those two years, because unlike Pacquiao he wasn’t taking on the very best.
Well, I don’t really want the other guy to win, I’m just always saying it to mess with my family and really, they get more into it I guess to try to prove a point that Pacman NEVER loses. And then I lol when the guy I go for loses because I already know, Pacman was going to win. But its whatever, like I said, I’m not too much a boxing fan. But I really want to say, geez, that match was TOO fast. I think Pacman should have went a little easier and save his strong left for a little later.
Mayweather is one of those guys you either love or hate. There really no point discussing about him. It like a religion topic no one going to win that debate.
soulbankai: Yea I knew what you meant, my point is that you would have a lot more FUN if you just got drunk and go ape shit like the rest of the family. :wgrin:
Lets get some facts straight. Mayweather had a difficult time in their first match, the descion was disputed by fans ( likely haters). A rematch took place, Mayweather soundly beat Castillo’s ass.
He wanted Tszyu, Tszyu fought and lost to Hatton. He wanted to fight De La Hoya and Mosley.
He got the same amount of money and the linear title from Baldomir. Fighting Baldomir over that cheating scum Margarito cleared his win over Zab Judah up. In beating Zab he should have collected all of the belts but he lost to Baldomir so he had to complete the job.
Margarito is pointless bringing up. You can’t be expected to fight any individual who calls out your name to be blunt Margarito wasn’t offering anything special.
The fight with Zab Judah was arranged before his loss to Baldomir, that’s the thing. Zab went and lost a tune up match.
Back in 2004, Mayweather actually contacted Cotto’s camp, they didn’t want any of Mayweather if I remember correctly. If Mayweather fought and beat Cotto and Margarito back then, people would instead be saying that he ducked Zab Judah and Baldomir.
Also unlike Pacquiao he isn’t taking on the very best? Errrrrrrrrm. I’m going to advise you to think that statement over again. Take a look at who the two have fought and who they are fighting and actually think.
For all of those who didn’t see Floyd at his zenith (and most of you guys probably never saw his 130 pound matches) this is the night that he peaked when he destoryed Corrales (RIP):
