Boulder Punching 101 - Chris Redfield Thread The Director's cut

Sounds good so far. Most likely everyone will get a damage nerf (think SFIV Vanilla to Super) so I’m optimistic.

Yea chris will probably just get better because everyone else got worse, which I am completely fine with.

I saw prone shot exploding on impact, makes me wonder if Chris can knock down with it now.

no, he blew up a landmine in front of him in prone position against hawkeye in one of the trailers but even if that was true that wouldn’t necessarily be a buff…

but if he really does have betterstart up for his move by umvc3 relesase then that alone already makes him a better character!

the problem we got to worry about is that the gtfo assists will be nerfs!

I want flamethrower to be faster on start-up a bigger flame, so Moriggan and all those low-crouchers can’t crouch under it
Shotgun, more range
Grenade Launcher to fully combo in a juggle without a assist
More hitstun on j. gunshot so he can combo of it easier

I want an air horizontal shot or a double jump, 1 or the other. or anything that changes jump trajectory. maybe a good air cross up attack. also air grenade toss would be cool.

also chris can fully combo in a juggle using ground magnum, then land mine or m grenade into grenade launcher, corner only.

does anyone know if chris’s level 3 satellite laser has faster start up in umvc3?

It’d be nice if he didn’t miss the d+H after air throw in corner also. I hate when that happens.

i wonder if this means he can otg f M, cancel in magnum, jump magnum, standing magnum, canceled into grenade m, canceled into grenade launcher super?

Yea been trying to think bout how that would help him. If it means he can cancel all his guns, even the command normals that should help not just in extending him combos, but in helping his zoning as well since he can cancel the recovery into a grenade or landmine. Should be interesting to see how this helps.

j. gunshot cancel into shotgun, go for combo

Hopefully they reduce the start-up on his guns, pulling of them jumping guns should not be that difficult. I don’t even go for them anymore cause they are so inconsistent.

Heard they reduced his start up on all his special moves, that means flamethrower, smg, shotgun and magnum, heard he has a new grenade launcher for anti-air uses, qcf+s

well I’m back from EVO2011.

I tried to rep Chris, but everytime I went on stream, I got rocked hard hahahaha. Justin Wong is… something else entirely. I had the jitters when going against Stone, and ultimately just played subpar. I have failed you all. Hey, at least there is now 1 Chris Redfield in the top 32 :P.

As for UMvC3, I didn’t play a lot, but there are some things to note.

  • A lot of people were dropping BnBs, be it due to differences in move properties or a universal increase in hitstun-deterioration. My normal chris BnBs had to be dumbed down in order to work properly. Here’s an example:
    - LMHS s.j. MMHS -> machine gun otg -> HS s.j. MMHS, 2H+Spencer grapple -> grenade launcher super = this combo works reliably in MvC3, but in UMvC3, it’s far more inconsistent. OTG machine gun seems harder to follow up upon, but it may have been an execution error on my part. The true problem was that upon the grenade launcher super, the ice didn’t last long enough for the rest of the grenade shots to have connected. I heard many people were dropping BnBs from other characters as well (such as Taskmaster), but it’s not clear why yet.

  • llnd pointed out to me that boulder punch H is no longer a garaunteed two hit combo. In other words, after a long combo, it’s likely that the first hit of the H boulder punch will connect, but your opponent will recover in time before the second one will hit. THIS IS CRUCIAL, since it was most reliable way to get into his level 3. There is a likely chance he might have some comepensation for this.

  • Crouching H can be cancel-able as may of you know already. I… was not creative enough to utilize this. I was too focused on making my normal BnBs work. Sorry people.

  • His specials do not seem very different at all. LLnD pointed out that he had more troubles following up after landmines with combos. I’m not sure if this is the case for me. H grenade fire puddle seems to last longer however. If this is actually true, then… Hooray!

… and that’s all I can really point out. Nothing new. I’m just happy I miraculously made top 32, and placed 25th. Despite though, I’m still a buttmonkey on the streams hahaha.

If it is true they are shortening combos across the board by increasing hitstun deterioration then I am happy. The main hype builder I find is when one player is able to nail several mixups in a row. In AE it takes at least 3 or 4 to beat someone and watching someone pull this off in a comeback is very thrilling. In MVC3 you only needed 1 or 2 mixups before going into a LOOONG combo which actually kills excitement.

I am looking forward to hitting the lab again to create my next Chris team. Haggar’s lariat isn’t hard knockdown anymore which means my super combos are out the window. Any other Haggar users out there? How are you planning on dealing with this change?

What I don’t understand, Chris’s Hypers are also affected by Hitstun-detoriation, not in UMVC3 but also MVC3, when I have a long combo and then do the hyper, the combo just resets, and the rest won’t combo…

Not sure what I’m going to do. Had a friend at EVO texting me about Haggar and he’s pretty much telling me to drop him after what he saw regarding Lariat assist.

To further add on, I saw someone playing as Iron Man and he just whipped out the Proton Cannon. The other player called Haggar out by accident (or he was already going to come out).

Typically, Haggar will be spinning through the Proton Cannon for a bit before getting hit, but in umvc3, Haggar got stuffed out immediately.

according to one of the changes, chris should be able to cancel his standing magnum into grenade M and if this is possible then he should be able to cancel that into grenade launcher super. i’m really looking forward to testing this new ability. being to end a long combo with a level 1 super without the aid of an assist is huge.
