They’re back in GD. There’s even one in the feedback forum.
Yeah, I’m going through the entire website right now and cleaning everything, give me a few hours.
They’ve also been spamming the events section.
The events section is harder to regulate but please just keep reporting them when you see them.
I just finished a sweep of the forums and tried to delete all the bot threads from every first page of every section. Report any I missed if you see them. By the end of my sweep I deleted 707 bot threads.
Also for other mods, I tried to clean up your sections of deleted threads. I know it sucks since you can still see a whole bunch of dead but remaining threads so tried to at least remove all of the deleted bot threads from the first few pages of each section.
There’s a bunch more now…
lol football bots
There are a couple in Strategy Zone>Fighting Games.
They seem to be quite popular, judging by the number of views
—accidently posted this in tech talk rather than create a new thread I’ll just leave this here—
I just came across this randomly since I prefer using google to find threads than SRK’s own search function. I don’t know if you are aware but take a look at the screen shot below
This isn’t limited to this search term, I found loads of spam when looking for the thread on Homeland. I’m guessing there must be thousands of pages created by these bots, and I’m wondering if this is related to the outage SRK has recently been experiencing. @MrWizard
If you follow any of the links you are taken to a thread posted on the forum, I have check and I cannot find these threads in the tournaments & events forum, so these posts are going all undetected :wtf:
If you click the google link >EVENTS you are taken to the following link
http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?events/monthly
receive the following error
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 4608 bytes) in**/home/shoryu/public_html/forum/library/Zend/Db/Statement/Mysqli.php** on line 294
I just put “site:shoryuken.com watch” into google so that google would display everything on SRK related to the phrase ‘watch’, it came back with 42 pages of bot threads, that’s 420 threads!
Heres another screenshot, note the links in the footer circled in purple. These do not appear on the normal forum footer.
There doesn’t seem to be a member id, but the screen shot above gives me the impression the bot is somehow using an alternate theme/layout
The solution is pretty simple. Don’t let noobs make threads.
Considering that a vast majority of honest, new members, only create an account to create a thread, this would be kind of an extreme measure to combat botting at the expensive of convenience for the newbies.
Newbies tend to just create threads without searching the forum first. If each forum had it’s only general discussion then they could just post in there.
True, but this is a problem ALL forums have. Newbies are generally lazy and just want quick and easy responses to their questions. Not to mention, even if they want to look for previous threads, the search function on this forum is commonly-known to be God-awful. Most people aren’t willing to scroll down through forum pages manually, even for commonly-asked questions.
But, as annoying as it is, we still can’t make it harder for noobs by forcing them to post X amount of replies before they’re able to create threads. That just might turn them off to the forum as a whole, which is a big no-no if we actually want to invite new players onto the forums, where we at least have a chance to teach them to be self-driven and to seek out answers for themselves before asking questions.
Is it possible to have noobs read a quick one-time primer on basic forum etiquette before they create an account? Have them check a box and agree to certain times prior before actually being shown the forum page? How to read the FAQs and stickies, [x] How to look for thread dealing with your answer first [x] and so forth and so forth?
Captcha+Email confirmation
Just had an idea, simple 1minute video intro (annotated screen caps) that pops up after they sign up to the forum that will basically tell them the most important guide lines where to post stuff etc.
Both good ideas. I thought there was already an email confirmation system in place for these forums?
No idea, but from the looks of the sign up page no.
Thanks we’re aware of the issue. There was an exploit through the event plugin and we’re working to get it resolved.
