Bomberman Ultra

If you press R3 you can change the view angle. There are 4 total.

The game is worth it. They just need to work out a few kinks. I’ve played online a lot but I need to unlock more costumes in local play.

Awesome, I should’ve checked more thoroughly. Cheers.

Bomberman goes hard . Def. Cop

I bought this yesterday. It is extremely buggy online. Backbone network coding FTW.

is it out on the US PSN?

Only 14 stages? That’s kinda whack.

Whack? Compared to what Bomberman game?

how’s the net play? is it smooth ? worth buying?

To break this game down simply. If you really liked Saturn Bomberman and the SNES Bombermans, you’ll hate this game. I hate it with a passion, I want my $10 back. On the other hand, if you like the PS’s Bomberman world and some of the newer bombermans like the gamecube one, you’ll probably really like this one. Finally, Backbone sucks donkey balls.

Well first off let me start off by saying I’ve played Bomberman Live thoroughly. Understand that this game is primarily a port of Bomberman Live + all 3 expansion packs packaged into the game.

Gameplay
It’s your typical Bomberman game. If you’ve played Bomberman Live then you already know what to expect with this game. 8 players online, 7 players offline local play and up to 4 of you can go online together

Graphics
-After playing the 360 version, it does seem that this version game is a little more crisp. Now it could be to having different connection settings on the consoles (component and HDMI) but still, it seems everything down to the blocks and the pass-through bombs are more detailed. It would’ve been nice if a backdrop picture would’ve been included on the game for when Ultra is highlighted on the XMB. You know how other games when you highlight them, they bring up a background picture and sometimes even have some sounds playing

Sound
-Sound is primarily the same as Live. You are greeted with the same music as in Live. One thing that Live is better at is the bomb placement sound. The game does not track every bomb you place. For instance, f you’re playing Bombing Run and you lay about 5-6 bombs in a row, you’ll only hear about 3 bomb drop sounds played. You’ll really notice this when Sudden Death starts and the falling of the blocks do not match up with the sounds played.

Verdict
This game is well worth the $10 and it’s technically cheaper than what the Live version was with expansions. You’ll have tons of replay value from this game whether it’s from playing online with people or just having a great party game at the house for friends who come over.

Now all thatl aside, let’s get into what’s missing from the game.

The Gripes

For the life of me, I do not understand why this game does not save custom game settings or camera angles. On Bomberman Live you could make up to 3 custom game sets so you would not have to go back through and customize each setting to how you want them. You would just go to “Custom Game 1” and voila, all your presets are there and you make the room.

There are 4 camera angles in this game. They are
1 Slanted-View
2 Slanted View Zoomed In
3 Top Down View
4 Top Down View Zoomed In

I prefer playing with View 4. Everytime I go into a game and a new game starts, I have to cycle through every view I want.

These are the things (camera and custom game settings) that get annoying after awhile. You would think that these things would be able to be saved onto the saved data file. Interesting enough, if you do happen to go to your Saved Data Utility, you’ll notice that there is actually a Bomberman Ultra file and underneath it, it says “Settings”. So obviously the game is saving SOMETHING. This is like saving Sound/Music level or Brightness/Contrast ratio. You know, simple things that you save in game. Just have the game, save it to the hard drive (like many other games do)

Lastly as far as signing multiple people online. When 4 people go online together, they ALL share the same name. So if I and 3 friends went online you’d only see Ven, Ven, Ven, Ven. Now when all of you are in a game, it’s extremely annoying to have to figure out which color you are. It turns into a “Hey, you move first, then you, ect” type deal. The feature of differentiating users by adding a (1), or (2) to the end of their name is NOT exclusive to Xbox Live. There are other games on PSN that allow your guests to have numbers on the end of their name. Supersonic Rocket Powered Battle comes to mind (you can have 4 vs 4 matches in that game).

I know this game is a port and sometimes ports are not as “polished” as their originals but the things lacking in this game seem to be that of the BASIC nature that you wouldn’t even think twice should be in a game (this almost reminds me of the Orange Box port - yeah you guys remember that lol). I really do not see why this game is lacking such basic features that are commonly found in other games (hell games from older gens). Graphics aside, it just seems that this game needs a bit more polishing. I figured the months of delay would’ve fixed whatever problems came up but I guess not…

I’ve also noticed that if you’re waiting in a room for everyone to press X, if someone enters or leaves, it resets the whole room so you have to press X again.

While playing online the game has lagged out a few times, where it will freeze and unfreeze. Sometimes it freezes to the point where you can’t shut the game off via the controller and you have to manually turn off the console (either by the 5 second press or the hard switch in the back). I’m wondering if this is caused sometimes by someone leaving mid-match.

Best $10 PSN I bought thus far! I can really see this game having a ton of replay value.

Has anyone encountered people who are quitting before there bomb to death? Mostly the host. I guess it could be a connection problem.

I’d already purchased this on release date, but thanks for the detailed rundown.

How is there 7 people off one console? controller sharing?

No, you can have up to 7 controllers for 1 console.

Man this game is the shit, $10 is a great deal.

You’ll have a great time playing it. Very fun.

We need to get a bunch of cats on srk to beast on some fools lolol.

This game is kinda gdlk.

They just need to patch the glitches on the online play. Still worth the money.

For those of you who frequent Playstation Home, don’t forget to check out the Bomberman Club

Yeah, this game is great. I don’t have to play that shitty bomberman international anymore. If anyone ever wants a good player to join please invite me through my PSN. I wish they would fix the online though because sometimes the game just freezes.

I just saw you in one of the games I joined, Megamanny, but in one of the matches when the blocks started falling, it said the host disconnected or something. I really hope they patch this to fix these issues soon.

Yeah, the game froze up on me so I had to quit. And I think it only happens when I host. I have not had it freeze when I play on someone elses game.

When I downloaded the demo and saw “Backbone” I knew something was up.
Doubtful that they would patch a $10 game.

Dang, I want to purchase this, but don’t want to waste $10 on an abandoned Backbone project.

How often would you say the game glitches or otherwise f*cks up?
