Bloodborne thread

Any chalice that does NOT have the word “root” in it is pre-designed by the devs, so when anyone makes a dungeon with those chalices, it’s the same for everyone. Any chalice that does have the word “root” in it is going to be randomly generated. In the former, most rewards and pickups will just be materials or whatever to make lower “depth” dungeons. Essentially, those are progression dungeons. You’ll want to do just about all of them because in most cases completing one also gives you access to a new “root” chalice. So for the latter, the root chalices, you’ll basically use those to search for good loot such as high level blood gems or runes.

“Depth” refers to general difficulty. 1 is like early game, 2 is like mid game, 3 is like end game, 4 is like NG+, and 5 is like NG++. Just approximations.

Later chalices will require more materials to be gathered, but normally for most of the non-root ones, you’ll get enough just be completing previous chalice dungeons you unlock. However, once you use any chalice once, you can search for dungeons other players have created using that same chalice, and load it up without paying material costs. So, about that, you can share any dungeon, root or not with any player by sharing the glyph code of the dungeon, which you can examine after placing a chalice on an altar. By doing this, you essentially only have to pay the material cost to use a chalice once, because every time after you could just enter someone else’s. Still, in the case of a root chalice you may want to roll your own dungeon anyway if you haven’t found any good gems or runes in other peoples.

I guess to summarize, do all the ones that don’t have the word “root” in them in order to unlock all of the basics. Then, do “root” dungeons at lower depths to gain loot, mostly better gems and runes, and sometimes also alternate versions of weapons which just have different gem slots.

Been avoiding the thread until I’d finished the game - not helped by the fact it wasn’t released in the UK until the 27th, and that was the day I went on holiday (oh how I cursed the release-delay! )! Hope you’ve all been having a blast!

First playthrough, as usual, was blind, offline, no summoning. Loved it. Absolutely loved it.

Konami must be weeping in their offices - literally no point them ever making another 3D Castlevania now!

Took a while to get used to the differences with the other Souls games - wonder if being a veteran counts against you this time - mainly not pressing L1 when in trouble, and realising that I was approaching bosses incorrectly by playing them like it was DaS (a bit of a eureka moment when I realised why I was doing no damage). I adjusted to the aggression more quickly than I thought I would, to be honest - and the parries are great.

Loved the atmosphere, the aesthetic, the music, and the design. The levels are amazing - how do From know exactly when you’ll be desperate for a shortcut so they can put one there? Some absolutely fantastic bosses, too. An amazing game.

I actually found all the secret levels and bosses, although not all the hidden stuff. So I went into NG+ really excited. Played through NG+ with the same character, and was pretty underwhelmed, to be honest. It was a nice surprise that I didn’t feel overpowered at first - far from it - but I’m not sure any of the boss fights were improved by simply taking (much) longer. Didn’t go for clearing them all on this run, like I usually do, I almost speed-ran it. I’ve not quite finished the chalice dungeons with this character, but the novelty of those is wearing off, too. Don’t think I’ll play them again once I’ve cleared what I need to - although co-op-ing them is great fun. And I have absolutely no interest - at the moment at least - in NG++ (a first for a Souls game).

I think it might be because I don’t feel like I can get any more powerful, and don’t fancy the NG+ boss fights again, but longer. I think the lack of upgrade materials is an issue, also, as although there aren’t a huge amount of weapons it’s just not feasible to try a fully-powered selection.

Playing through NG again at the moment with a Strength build (went Skill first time - created a female character, picked the Threaded Cane because it was the only Skl weapon, and realised I’d accidentally made Ivy from Soulcalibur!), and that’s fun. Determined to finish one NPC’s questline this time - I though Lucatiel was fragile! Maybe new NGs, rather than piling up NG+s, are the answer in this one.

So, as much as I loved it (and I really did - my favourite first playthrough of all the Souls games, I’d say) I’m not sure how much I’ll go back to it as time goes on. May change my mind as I get better, of course. And every time I think I’m done with Dark Souls 1 I get the itch for one more run… and there’s PS4 Scholar of the First Sin sat there…

Best Souls game yet? Maybe - in the short term. Can’t see it lasting like DaS, though. But I hope I’m wrong!

Personally, once I put 60 hours in any game, I think it’s been worth it. Even if I do never play it again, if it held on to me that long it must have had some redeeming factors. But if it did hold on to me that long, I probably will play it again eventually down the road. I’ve never put 1000 hrs into any souls game because there are just simply other games I want to play but re-visiting games is definitely something I do. So I’m ok with not feeling like I can play this one for 500 hours(though it could happen anyway), because what IS here is the best it’s been overall for me

As for upgrades, you need to be in depth 5 root chalice dungeons to get the really powerful stuff. Some of the gems in there offer massive boosts in damage, far more than you’d ever get from stats. IIRC some people have seen over 20% dmg up gems, two to three of those is a huge chunk of damage.

I actually think the game has a lot of life for PvE if you like getting loot to make your shit as powerful as can be, but PvP definitely, absolutely needs a freaking arena or something.

Oh, I’ve had my money’s worth and more, I agree. The Vicar Amelia fight alone was worth the price of the game!

Even if I never play it again (which I will) it’s been amazing. The game hardly puts a foot wrong. The Legendary Big M has done it again.

Now all From need to do is team up with Rocksteady so we can have a steampunk Batman swooping around Yharnham…

Ah, thank you very much! So the root Chalices are randomized versions of the same Chalice with differing loot and such, and the other one I gained is a completely new dungeon with higher difficulty. Why it doesn’t tell you this in-game I have no idea whatsoever, or maybe it did and I missed it.

I’ll make a new character and actually explore all of them this time.

EDIT**

Also, revised version of the Rapier build I wanted. Took your advice on the Skill/Bloodtinge stats.

one complaint I do have about this game is at the loot isn’t as varied as the others souls games

You’re right about that… You barely find anything interesting in Bloodborne. Yea, you pick up a weapon, an armor set, or the occasional Rune here and there, but the majority of loot are just QS Bullets, Blood Vials, or a useless Gem.

not just the loot the environment is more varied in DaS as well although I think that’s kind of a wash between the 2 as DaS kinda suffered from the lava level, water level, ice level, cave, castle, trope a little bit, which is what made it awesome it took those typical things and portrayed it in its own way, were as Bloodborne is more of a single world built from the ground up kinda samey but not really.

[details=Spoiler]Where do i go after defeating Amygdala?[details=Spoiler]

Well Bloodborne is mostly representing a city, while Dark Souls gave us “nations” or “kingdoms” however you wish to characterize it.

Where ever you were going before, that place is optional. What’s the most recent story progression thing you did?

[details=Spoiler]The last three bosses i downed were Reborn, Logarius and Armgdala. Two optional spots. Oh lord lmao

Also, Alfred killed that queen woman. If that means anything[/details]

Spoiler

Go back to Reborn lantern and proceed forward into the building. Also it’s Amygdala*

Right now this game is actually making me mad. I am randomly getting bodied left and right. Probably done lost about 120k blood echoes right about now. Not sure if I want to play for a bit.

Sometimes you just have to take a break.

[details=Spoiler]I remember it pretty much taking me to the nightmare frontier, which is how i defeated Amygdala… Unless i missed something

I also just took down the Host of Nightmare boss. Another optional path i guess? It seems i’m playing this game backwards lol.[/details]

Spoiler

Amygdala is in the “Nightmare Frontier”. Going into the building after The One Reborn and examining the mummy should have sent you to “Nightmare of Mensis”, not the former. But anyway, “Micolash, The Host of the Nightmare” is the boss there so you are in the right place. You aren’t in an optional area, Just keep going. After you beat Micolash you should be able to find a way up. I forget if you needed a key or a switch but you definitely can keep going up.

The coherence of the game world is one of the things I love about it. It feels like a Lordran-sized Boletarian Palace.

yeah that’s one of the most stand out aspects of this game. It just all feels like everything fits. It’s so easy to get sucked into the world they created because it’s just so fleshed out.
