Shooting the mech upward for her ult is the best say of using it, yes, but it still doesn’t change the fact that its application is to mainly contest a point. Ultimately (pun intended) her ult doesn’t do enough and it takes a very long time time to charge. Still the worst ult in the game IMO.
Also, quick note about Mercy for new players, always be damage boosting people if they’re at full HP. Most of the time you should be damage boosting damage dealers even if they’re not at full HP. It’s more effective to boost damage because the idea is for your ally to kill someone before they die, and dishing out more damage quickly is better than winning a fight through sustain. Generally you’ll only want to heal someone over boosting them they’re in probable one shot range, meaning around 150 HP or less. Considering how high damage is in this game, you’ll want higher damage output over healing someone for say 50 HP. Granted situations change and you may want to heal more, but that comes with experience (like wanting to heal a tank more that damage boosting them).
Mcree ult kinda has the same idea of clearing a point by forcing people to leave his line of sight or to flat out just kill him before he fires except it punishes people more reliably due to the fact that whoever is has low hp gets insta killed faster. The stupid thing is that the duration is 6 seconds and if he gets no shots out, he keeps 50% ult charge.
Also there’s this ult mechanic that mcrees can abuse vs reinhardt in some situations that I learned yesterday. Say you have a reinhardt shielding 2-3 other players with a full 2k shield loaded up. Apparently if you charge the ulti until you get the lethal marks on the team mates behind him and then you keep charging even more, this allows dead eye to apparently charge up it’s damage past the maximum health of a character to around 900 damage, completely shattering a reinhardt’s 2k damage shield and killing those behind him.
She’s more utility IMO. She’s a tank that technically has two lives, and very high mobility due to her flying ability. Defense Matrix is something that people really sleep on too. You can use it to completely nullify shit that might otherwise wipe your whole team. You can negate shit like Roadhog, Pharah, and Reaper’s ult’s without your team needing to stand behind a shield your holding. Just put a defense matrix over said enemy and delete their bullets. Or in a map like say Hanamura, you can place it from the big door to the little room on the right and give a teammate a completely safe walk way that can’t be broken. Only problem is it doesnt stop beams like Mei’s freeze ray. Only projectiles such as grenades, bullets, and rocket.
There’s also the fact that her boost can be used to forcefully push a sniper out of a vantage point, or push an enemy off the map entirely. Or just close a really big gap.
I think a somewhat weaker tank with the mobility of lighter characters has it’s benefits. You just have to know when and where to use it. She isn’t an all purpose character, but she can get a lot done.
Yeah dva is sorta a map specific pick on certain points. Apparently Dorado last point on defense she’s a great swap since her ult works great there. Otherwise she’s been used as a last ditch panic effort when a maps final point is about to get capped as well. Apparently the only time Mei is ever picked for competitive play is on Dorado last point - defense too.
When the only time your ult is game changing is when it’s overtime, it’s a bad ult. D.Va is great at harassing snipers for sure, but sadly you could just play better heroes that do that job and more. Her tankiness is exaggerated because of her huge headshot hurtbox (largest in the game I believe) on top of her already huge hurtbox. It also hurts that she moves very slowly when she’s attacking as well.
Generally when you use McCree’s ult you’ll probably get at least one kill, which is pretty nice (especially if it’s an important target). It’s way harder to get even one kill with D.Va’s ult.
Battlenet ID is Zoolander lol surprised it wasn’t taken I would have preferred Zoolanderbeast, but too many letters. Anyways I love Zenyatta he’s good in like any situation sure he is squishy and slow, but if you get discorded you’re 90% guranteed to die he is really underrated IMO.
It’s in comparison to other ults that can effectively do the same thing attached to strong characters, where as dva is mainly used in competitive play for panic defense where you immediately need to reach the point and have a body to stall.
Particularly with popularity of mcree, his ult fufilling the same role of area denial for a similar duration but has better chances of actually killing, and the fact that it’s attached to mcree. So basically like if you want to deny a objective and clear the area in competitive play, you likely already got a mcree.
Alternatively the fact that Zarya is a much more popular and proven as a consistent pick as a off tank than dva as well, her overall combat kit and mitigation tools are solid, and her ult is practically THE best objective clearing/choke point clearing/just flat out shitting on a whole team ulti. The effective range on the pull in effect on the vortex of it is practically a entire room, and she doesn’t even need a team to combo with, she can practically wipe a team by herself with her ulti. Practically the best ulti attached to one of the best off tanks.
Dva’s ult has a more specific niche than clearing an objective of people. The one real thing that her ult is consistently good at is breaking a objective absolutely filled with static defense. Certainly if the objective has like multiple bastions, 2-5 torbs and no reinhardt defending any of them and the objective is littered with symmetra turrets, she’ll be a perfect counter to that. She’ll nuke all the turrets off and bastions will have to unpack immediately. She’s there to put a stop to horrific pub static defense cheese, and I’m thankful for that option because it happens often enough.
Zarya ult does nothing vs static defense, Mcree I haven’t bothered noticing if it targets static defense, sometimes there’s just too many turrets tucked away in corners for pharah and junkrat to handle if they went all in with the turrets, reinhardt shield can only defend vs so many turrets, and winstons shield isn’t enough. Dva’s ult by far in that situation is the best counter to that strat.
Alternatively dva does pretty alright with dealing with turrets withotu her ult. Flying up to a turret with barrier out and then blasting at it in point blank is great. So in the pub meta she’s pretty alright on offense since the rest of the team often has difficulties coordinating for dealing with turrets and the rest of the opposing team, and torb is a popular pick on pub defense. Otherwise if you’re not dealing with torbs on defense, or if your team doesn’t have the coordination to follow up on you canceling out a bastion barrage, there’s probably better characters that can accomplish the role you need.
TL;DR use dva vs static defense heavy teams/panic option on defense
I thought Winston was terrible but realized he is pretty solid. Good against sniper. Nice barrier for defense.
Ult can reposition people. Very supportive I would say.
owattjacob pretty much covered why D.Va’s ult is bad. It’s good on paper for what it does, but other similar ults do the job way better and more consistently. The more you play and the better you and the people around you get, you will begin to realize how hard it can be to have a strong impact as D.Va.
Her ult is pretty godlike against static defense. Too bad good players don’t really play Torb and Bastion because there are way better heroes to play instead. lol
I would like to see defense heroes get buffed soon. It feels pretty bad when you’re on defense and think “why would I play X defense hero when I can just play Y offense hero on defense instead!”. There are exceptions of course, but it feels like the defense heroes are too niche right now. I think it mostly has to do with how absurdly high damage is in this game, so it really does end up being “a good defense is a good offense”.
I think Junkrats in a good place after looking at how often he’s being used on defense competitively, a slight buff like reduced mine CD would be alright, reduced reload time or increased fire rate would be amazing. Torb as well if not great, slight buff for his main gun is fine if you want to make him more appealing.
Bastion i rather not buff too much or else the cheese strats might get out of hand. Him getting buffs out of turret mode/ulti is fine though. Widowmaker is probably the most consistently picked for good reason. She’s strong at that role and strong enough to warrant offense bringing in a widowmaker to counter snipe.
Hanzo is the one defense character that absolutely needs help, I believe even more than Mei. I’d prefer a mobility buff than a damage buff, think he has plenty damage just lacks the mobility options to really do his job well.
I definitely play reaper lol, I recommend for those interested in reaper to start with someone like genji first solely to just explore the map inside and out and know all the possible flank routes you go to as reaper. He thrives on ambushes and backdoors so the better you know the map, the more reliably you can pull some metal gear shit and sneak past a entire team to kill them all from behind starting with the healer without even needing a ulti.
Exactly. Knowledge of the map is paramount with Reaper, as there are some really fucked up ways and places you can teleport to flank their team and drop in with dat Death Blossom. Collect your free PotG every match.
